The 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Is Still Not Worthy Of The Eclipse Name

- #Mitsubishi has been on a quite a roll lately with bringing out new products that consumers want to buy. A couple years ago, we got pretty excited when we heard the Eclipse name was coming back to the lineup. However, the #MitsubishiEclipseCross is nothing like the sports car that used to bear the name and for 2022, the #EclipseCross gets some updates that address the polarizing styling of the pre-refreshed model. Its still a decent small SUV and worthy of your consideration, but the SUV is still not worthy of the #Eclipse name.

If you ignore the name, this is a surprisingly decent small SUV at a reasonable price. We personally think if Mitsubishi was going to slap the “Eclipse” name on this vehicle, it needs to be sportier to drive and much quicker. This car would do well if it was all-electric. 🤔
Is the MiVEC i4 still an aluminum head, cast iron block unit? That may account for the less than expected fuel economy.
The Eclipse EV well priced here NZ they seem to be focusing more that way over here.
Too bad that the airplane at the end ruined your video; with the long chemtrail.
@@jravishing chemtrail or Con trail it's hanging in the air so I'd say maybe the former!
You did a decent, thorough review, but there is one statement you made about the fog lights that is not correct (1:52). The SE and SEL trims DO have LED fog lights. The new lowered headlight housing has 2 projector lenses per side. The upper projectors are bi-LED headlights that house both low and high beams in the same projector. When the vehicle is on but not driving (i.e. when super quiet), you can actually hear the lift-gate inside the headlight housing flip for the high beams. The lower projectors are the LED fog lights.
There is also one additional "hidden" feature of the Eclipse Cross that is not easy to find. There is a hidden vent beneath the front driver and passenger seats that provide heated air for the feet of rear seat passengers during winter.
Annoying how testers complain about noisy acceleration when no responsible owner drives that way, as a loaded eclipse owner i am thoroughly impressed by its simplicity and reliability. S AWC is awesome.
I’m considering one ☝️
You won't regret it 👍
I purchased this exact vehicle in May of 2021 and hands down it is the best SUV I have owned!! Absolutely LOVE my 2022 Eclipse Cross SEL S-AWC!!! If you're considering it ..... don't walk but RUN to get one!!! You won't regret it!! Former Nissan Rogue leaser for 15 years!!
Get a Mazda CX-5 .
Much nicer vehicle...
Give me an update, still feel the same way? I’m interested in purchasing one. Thank you
@@karlvlawton Yes I do .... If not I love it even more!!!
@@Cruisingwithwheels thank you!!!!
When ppl type best I ever had...they need to qualify that statement with what they have had. I mean if you only had a Chevy Trax or a Buick Encore to compare it to that would be helpful to know.
The coolest thing about driving a Mitsubishi is that it's engineered by the same company that makes train propulsion systems for the LIRR trains, elevators, and is working on an airplane. (The Eclipse Cross is one of the older designs with no Nissan engineering)
At least I prefer the old Eclipse not this crappy thing
lol what!!!
This thing is quicker than the 2022 Tiguan!! lol
This is a great car for the $$ awd and 10 year 100k mile warranty is better than Toyota and Honda. Ppl hate on it because of the name but it’s a great cross over
18:47 Funny you should mention a Plug-In Hybrid version of the Eclipse Cross because there actually is an Eclipse Cross PHEV model, it's just not sold here in the US. It is in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.
That’s rigt! I tink that Mitsu going to offer the PHEV version of this in the summer with the Outlander. I’m wil keep wathching about it.
Keep doing what you do Sofyan. You’re a huge inspiration to me and many others in this industry!
You missed the best feature of the Outlander Sport and Eclipse Cross the S-AWC, it allows 2wd mode for fuel savings, 4wd auto which acts like Subaru 85% up front 15% out back and then with slip it allows up to 50/50 split. 4wd lock allows 60% rear 40 % front and allows the rear to overpower the front of the car and drift. Incredible AWD system in the sub compact segment.
best system since the glory days in the 90s. dont let toyota or subaru fool you
I've just bought one of these and I'm delighted with it ! It is in Diamond red too but only 2WD but it does all I want it to ... if you're after speed then buy a big V-8 turbo thing ..
Shoutout to both sofyan, and the redline team. You guys have been putting out some great content. I’ve been a follower since sofyan would review cars in the car lot back in the day!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
@DOGS LOL because they have been putting in work on the content. It’s been consistent
We also appreciate comments like this so thank you so much! ☺️☺️
Redline reviews are always exciting to watch. Love his energy and humor. He is the only solo car journalist that I check a million times to see if there are new reviews. Hopefully he hits a million subscribers…he deserves it. I love when he said a face only a mother can love….that was so funny…I could not stop laughing 😂
When a model is discontinued for a year, then brought back with “updates” without anyone ever noticing that’s saying something.
I'm glad you finally review this! I noticed they did a refresh last year and was waiting on somebody to do a review on it. The styling is definitely better in my opinion, it just needs a faster optional engine.
they need a lancer so bad to not go outta business
A compact sedan won’t save them especially in today’s market
I don't understand why this wasn't the new gen of the Outlander Sport which is still in the same damn first (and only) gen that started in 2011...
I had an Endeavor for 12 years and loved it.
Sure, this crossover looks cool and unique for what it is, but giving it the Eclipse name was a BIG mistake…
I’m sure it’s the same with the Mustang Mach-E, they needed to give it a big name so that it at least sounds cool
you mean like a mustang SUV? that someone bought... who reviews this channel?
lucky for him the GT does not suck as much as the regular version.
Wow!!!!! This Crossover Is The Same From The Previous Generation Of The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Anyway, But Also This Crossover Is A Fun Vehicle & A Daily Driver As Well, Very Nice Review Sofyan.
So if this is sub compact what is the outlander sport considered to be?
18:43 Should have made it sportier and electric? This is where you lose the plot. Mitsubishi is a car company not a fanboi’s wet dream
The Evo would beg to differ.
@@thecriticalthinkeroutsidet4947 that was then , this is now.. don't be so very stupid.. money an market share matter.
Love the vids!
Mistibitshi then: we’ve got for you a evo eclipse GST 3000GT and a lot of other fun cars so we can create a brand image and icon
Mistibitshi now:
yep.. Mitsubishi as a vehicle brand is kinda doa.
I’m excited for you to drive the 2022 Outlander. I agreed with all of your assessments of the previous body style. I recently purchased a 2022 SEL Outlander, and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the options and build.
Mitsubishi is one of those companies that you have to actually remind yourself that they still sell cars here in the US.
After lancer, pajero montero, mirage, they just stopped.
The interior reminds me of my 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage, just a tiny bit zhuzhed up.
Love the way it looks especially in that Red Diamond. I just wished that they'd put the new Outlander's interior into this.
Totally agree! I ignored Mitsubishi until i sat in the new outlander, then i was looking ito all the Mitsubishis. Lol!
Red is the special color of the models of the brand
Having trouble I’m debating between this car the outlander or the Hyundai Tucson how good is reliability?
Antonio, I've had the 2022 Eclipse Cross SEL (which I purchased out the door for just over $26K after dealer and manufacturer discounts/rebates) for about four months. I highly recommend the Eclipse Cross SEL (with all of its options, features, and price tag) over any other vehicle in this segment. Hyundai's reliability is sub-par, at best, and is well documented. I test-drove the Outlander and it cannot match-up with the Eclipse Cross SEL when you factor in cost. Additionally, owners of the Outlander (at least at time of this writing) have complained that the hood shakes when at highway speeds. I am not sure if Mitsubishi has corrected that problem yet.
Kinda don't mind the name. Im glad this car is able to carry the eclipse legacy!
This looks huge compared to an hr-v or kicks
It’s actually very small. I’ve test driven it. The trunk is fairly useless actually
It’s a compact SUV, the HRV and Kicks are subcompact.
I have one and love it. Much better and larger than the Kicks and way better value than HRV. It's a value-loaded car. Not luxury but great all around for the $.
@@wallybeegone not true , I have 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SE same thing as 2022 one only difference is outside styling ,
The trunk is very much usable , I've fit large items in trunk that I thoughti couldn't
The 2022 must be even way better in trunk space
@@wallybeegone very small? you haven’t driven and compare this to kicks and hrv, how will you say, very small?
Honestly the Outlander is the only new Mitsubishi I’d look into, hopefully the brand takes advantage of being part of the Nissan Alliance.
Yup, so sad. Mitsubishi used to be one of the respected boutique brands like subaru, or mazda.
That new Outlander is really a rebadged Nissan Rogue so it'll have way worse JATCO CVT8 issues than the old 100% Mitsubishi Outlander.
It is interesting that in Japan both the new outlander and eclipse cross are only available with PHEV power train. All the gas-powered variants have been dropped since 2020. They should bring the PHEV version of this car to the US. -- Current EVO X Final edition and outlander PHEV owner
phev is nice but mitsubishi ICE are amazing still and alot cheaper
Instead of messing around with little cookie cutter crossovers, Mitsubishi should resurrect the Pajero, and of course update it.
I think they would have a winner 👍.
They still make them in other country for your information. Just not here in the States.
The name is supposed to be a sports car; Things are changing dramatically. Good review
just so we are on point here - after 1999 the ECLIPSE was not worthy of the eclipse name
so it no longer matters
this is the REAL eclipse now, people need to get used to it
Title should read "The 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Is Still Not Worthy Of Selling"
I have an Eclipse Coupe and an Eclipse Cross, and I like both. While the 2022 Eclipse Cross does not have the same limitless power that the Eclipse Coupe has, the Eclipse Cross does have MUCH better headlights, a MUCH smoother and quieter ride, has a touchscreen (eclipse coupe does not even have a screen), the cross is much more luxurious both inside and out, has all the newer safety features, 2 skylights, phone actually connects to the vehicle (the 2009 coupe does not have that capability). The Eclipse Cross has decent acceleration in the 0-45 range and is still ok 0-60 for a CUV. But the cross does not have the same limitless acceleration power of the Eclipse Coupe. The coupe has what seems to be limitless power, no matter what speed you're driving. The sound of the Eclipse Coupe engine and exhaust note is also something the Cross does not have. The Eclipse Coupe is a blast to drive, especially on the highway, but the cabin is LOUD. Wind noise, tire noise, road noise (yes, tire noise and road noise), engine noise on the highway mean that earplugs are needed in the coupe.
What you just mentioned are the very noticeable differences between going from a sports coupe to an SUV. It’s why so many Americans love crossovers. We just feel Mitsubishi needs to add more speed and handling if they expect people to buy the “Eclipse” name on it.
@@theredline This I completely agree with. When completing my Mitsubishi survey (goes directly to Mitsubishi)about the Eclipse Cross I mentioned that having an upgraded trim level with additional power would both appease the critics and bring additional excitement toward the Eclipse Cross and the Mitsubishi brand. I purchased my 2022 Eclipse Cross SEL with touring package for $27.5k (plus destination + taxes) and absolutely love the vehicle. Since I also have a 2009 Eclipse Coupe GT with the 3.8 liter V6 engine, and drive both cross and coupe on an almost daily basis, I am continually reminded each time I drive of the differences between the two. Both vehicles look fantastic and are fun to drive.
Mitsubishi just don't do only vehicles. They do so many things engine, CVT, train, air plane, petroliuem, Chemical solution, industrial infrastructure, food etc list goes on. One of the huge corporation. Mitsubishi vehicles are really good and last long. Lot of people don't think or don't know much so they don't buy. If you want a reliable vehicle buy Mitsubishi and best warranty out there. It's a prestige to drive Mitsubishi.
It's more like an SUV version of Lancer than Eclipse, because the top of the taillights is tilted down, like on the Lancer
my ford fusion se has the same specs...
it's nuts to have the eclipse badge
considering the first i looked at was a spyder
Me trying to pick if I should watch this or Doug demuros new video on my break I chose redline reviews
I don't know why they keep moving ahead lights at the bottom
What are the benefits of having the headlights that low?🤔🤔
If Mitsubishi wants to revitalize sales and their name, they need to bring back the Lancer.
Because sedans sell so well?
They need to bring their Far East products into the US market.
Their pickup trucks, and Pajeros.
The Mitsubishi Triton would do well against Tacos,Frontiers and Rangers.
@@johnnymichael1804 I do miss the Montero, you have a point.
19:00 Retro-modern can also be done VERY wrong though-just look at the Chrysler PT Cruiser.
Eclipse fans like to drift with the old one this time, not with this shit-looking swagger
They also have Toyota Corolla cross as well what’s the difference between two?
Both are disappointing boring cash grabs like most crossovers
The cross for Toyota is actually worth it.
Lmao one is a Mitsubishi and one’s a Toyota
@@XX-166 at least im driving the regular Corolla im not sure if I should go for Corolla cross because the Corolla name plate is older than Mitsubishi which those cars never stop selling since 1960s up until now
@@trandizzle5 go drive the cross and then make your decision. You will at least get a higher driving position which is great for your ability to see the road. Mitsubishi is wayyyy behind other manufacturers in so many ways that’s why they only sold 100k vehicles and Toyota sold 2 million.
There have never been truer words spoken than "How the might have fallen" when it comes to Mitsubishi. A total enigma. Company that gave us Talon, Eclipse, Galant, not to mention Evo now makes this and the Mirage...
Also the Diamante and Montero
In Puerto Rico the top off the line Eclipse Cross does not come with 4WD is very Sad
Agree. SO not worthy of the name! Needs passive seatbelts, remove airbags and any safety equipment, tiny rear seats, numb steering, crunchy gearbox, and massive turbo lag
So mean to this car what if it was PHEV will that be ok to you sir
The thumbs up is for the reviewer not the car.
If only it had at least 200hp I would buy it for certain. 😭
Very Nice Bro! Get Good People!
piano black plastic in the center boutta be scratched asf
the eclipse was also a sporty looking car that was'int exiting it was after it was tuned and you spent almost 2k
Nissan and Mitsubishi partnership. 1 platform. REVIVE Maxima Bluebird "wagon" and Galant VR4.... take the Altima AWD platform, make it a midsize hatch like the Kia Stinger/older Mazda6. But with usable rear passenger space.
Offer a VQ (not that new variable compression one) and a 4 banger turbo. That would be different enough from Infiniti products and a valid SUV alternative. More importantly, make a base model that doesnt have all the expensive bits but avail with the v6 engine. NO CVT.
2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse cross vs 2022 Toyota Corolla cross
Good matchup but on paper, the corolla cross is lighter, has more power, and better options.
Come on man, dont drive it like a sports car and complain ab it, this is any other compact suv for everyday use, from point A to point B. Whats the point of testing 0-60? Is someone going to race in this suv?
Obviously, most owners won’t drive the Eclipse Cross the way we did. But if Mitsubishi is going to slap the “Eclipse” name on this vehicle, they should also include some performance and handling into the mix.
The 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Is Still Not Worthy Of The Eclipse Name
*Ford Mustang Mach-E has entered the chat*
☠️😆
That case is even worse in my opinion. The Eclipse Cross may not be a sporty car, and I'm NOT the biggest crossover fan myself, but at least it looks sexy like the old Eclipses and Mitsubishi is TRYING for somewhat of a modern look with it, even if I think they could do better-the Ford Mustang Mach-E is just a joke IMO.
Wish they'd give us an eclipse based off the new Z platform.
Recorded horizontally:)
Mach-E GT, Corolla Cross, and Eclipse Cross? I know the American market has a hard-on for SUV’s at the moment but this is getting out of hand. What’s next? The F-150 Explorer?
They need to bring back the original Eclipse.
Could’ve been a lot more :(
Now we know why some manufacturers are pumping in fake engine notes thur the sound system!
It hurt when I see this car on the road and think about my 99 gst turbo 🥲
I love the front end with this but I prefer ghe previous rear end. Anyways it’s distinctive for sure, looks better than anything from Honda or Toyota. I personally think their vehicles are underrated and just as good as any of its competitors.
Mitsubishi Group has continued to improve.
They need to bring the eclipse back. Very iconic car.
I wish they would've named it something else lol
If i had a new high school driver in my family, I'd get this for them - not too fast lol, cant fit all their friends in there, and the boot is big enough that they can go to the grocery store for me lol
What device is that you use for the 0-60
Hard to believe the company responsible for the awesome Eclipse Spider and Evo, has been reduced to producing cheap crossover knockoffs of nissan models.....
True , even though this isn't a Nissan, the Outlander is
@@VaunShiz Interesting twist, this uses the same platform as the one used to make the last generation Chrysler Sebring.
@@moviesmetalmusicmotorvehic4828 The Mitsubishi GS platform share very little with the JC platform.
@@VaunShiz yeah, but since Mitsubishi and Nissan are together I just meant they kinda look alike with their suv models.....Mitsubishi used to make distinct looking models that you knew were Mitsubishi

Nissan gave them oulander platform!.? I think u meant rogue or another Nissan model
Nope, Nissan gave Mitsubishi the Rogue platform so they could build the new Outlander.
Put an 8 or 9 speed and you'll get better mpg.. I don't understand the logic behind these cvt trans. Better still, charge an extra 1500 for the 9 speed and see how it sells. I know they are trying to reduce cost but these trans are unreliable and make ends engine work harder than they need to.
excellent review for this mini SUV that I will NEVER BUY... (sorry Mitz)
Nice.
Mitsubishi + Nissan + Renault. What can possibly go wrong?
Same class as Chevy Trax. just affordable lil cuv for some. is what it is. Eclipse were nice but also junk lol so name is a name
look like a lexus
Driving it in CVT mode is good for daily driving, especially traffic. But if you want to wake it up use the paddle shifter downshift and treat it like a stick shift. My wife has an Outlander Sport she drives it in CVT mode and gets 24-25 mpg, when I drive it, I use the paddle shifters, it drops to 17-18 mpg sometimes less. It's a lot of fun especially if you upshift when accelerating to redline, it feels good. Your review was good, but you didn't try the 8 step paddle shifter. Put it into sport mode from a stop, take-off then upshift as you approach redline. The CVT is sporty, that's why they gave you the paddles. The Mitsubishi paddle shifters were based on Porsche's Tiptronic technology(INVECS-III).
Sporty? With fake shift points on a JATCO CVT8? C'mon bruh, a CVT has infinite gear ratios, there are no real gears to upshift. The paddles are basically a placebo.
Does have to be the most grating chimes I've ever heard in a car
Every manufacturer is bringing back their ionic vehicle name. It's just a marketing gimmic just to attract buyers🙄😏.
The airplane at the end, left a long chemtrail.
Versus KIA Seltos?
This guy lol I love this car put it in slap shift and it rpm’s don’t even drive just keeps steady boost building with the turbo she moves a for a four cylinder
They should had added led fog lights
It should be illegal to use piano black plastic on a steering wheel.
Compared to my old Mitsubishi mirage, my new eclipse cross is a Bentley as far as I'm concerned 😂😂
mitstubishi has PHV version in Japan .they should bring to North America.
Plus don't judge by it's name
I agree not much there to get excited about especially with the new HRV and Rogue Sport coming later this year.
I can’t buy into these small turbo engines that get worse gas mileage than many larger displacement and more reliable engines.
What other car maker labels the vehicle model on the front lip of the hood?? 🤢
Oh my gosh too much whiny 😫 on this review

For the money I would rather buy a Mazda or a Hyundai/Kia product because at least those three brands know what they are doing whether you like them or not
