Really enjoying this series. I own a "big box" Rat from the 90s and it's great, but kinda impractical to put on a pedalboard. The Woodcutter has drawn my interest in the past, and this video def increases my interest. The Motel looks cool, too, though. If nothing else, this has inspired me to play my vintage Rat!
Few years back, WOODCUTTER won my own personal shootout. For recording studio use it was just consistent, modern, affordable, and always brings the sound of a classic RAT to the party. PLUS Grant & Karen rule ! Also own a LOAF . Great people, Great Company.
This one, like the Iron Horse, was indistinguishable from the Proco RAT. Listening while bored-scrolling on Facebook, I could not tell when you were switching between the two. That must mean it's very good. I've been GAS'ing for a Woodcutter forever, but they haven't got EU distribution, AFAIK.
The Wood Cutter is great! I personally went with the DRV from 1981 Inventions but this was my 2nd choice for a Rat style pedal. Nashville really knows how to do a Rat!
@@jeffroalson1915 yup! i limited this year to LM308 chip pedals. already scheming the next rat week which will have a premise that the drv will fit right into!
I agree with your assessment of this one. I notice that the manufacturer puts some emphasis on the variability of samples of the original Rat, and claims that the Woodcutter was based on 'a good one', with modern component tolerances and quality control making for much greater predictability sample-to-sample. I don't see what's not to like.
Wow that is very close indeed. I suppose it's different to the Skinner Box as the SB is meant to be the 'Bud Box' RAT and this one, if I'm right, is modelled on the slightly later but still 'vintage' versions? Either way it sounds wicked.
Thanks... Because of this video, NPD for me. I am now a proud owner of a this pedal. I tried using a few other pedals as low gain boosters into this pedal (klon clone, timmy, keeley ts808...) and from the little stacking I did, low gain OCD get this thing singing. I love the way the pedal sounds on its own but I have all these pedals, why not experiment.
Going through these videos, I think this and the Rattler are my two favorite rat types at the moment! Really torn at the moment. Would you have any preference between those?
@@DemosInTheDark ok but it's the same story with a current production rat: the difference is too subtle to justify the price gap. I'll stick with a cheap rat anyday.

100% agree with everything. 👊
Thanks Ryan! I'm liking the Wood Cutter 🙂
yeah it's a goodie!
Ooh! I’ve been looking forward to this comparison! Really feeling the Wood Cutter.
it's a solid one for sure!
Thanks for this Ryan! Didn't realize how close the RAT style distortion bumps up against a light FUZZ. Cool sounds for the tweener to my RAT newb ear.
heck yeah!
I was feeling the Rattler and now I’m torn. Thanks a lot lol.
don't, umm, lose sleep over it tho.
Woodcutter definitely. Rattler is so sick though.

You can order direct from Wood Cutter...
Pretty bang on relative to the original... nicely done
yeah it's great!
Love my Woodcutter but damn that light is bright!
so ya know it’s working! 😎
Woodcutter is my fave.
and you know a thing or two about distortion... 🤘
Just bought mine, makes my vintage rat sound fuzzier than I previously thought
innnteresting!

DRV is great! i have a few!
@@DemosInTheDark any reason it didn’t make it in the video series?

@@DemosInTheDark what chip does the DRV use?

Really enjoying these vids!
thanks man! i enjoyed making them (also enjoying that the project is finally complete!)

awesome! the woodcutter is a kick*ss pedal and it absolutely stacks like a champ!
How was it with the woodcutter 1st, going into ocd?
Definitely very similar
even more so when you're playing it. pretty uncanny.

How would the woodcutter work with bass? The low end is intact?
Loved those crossover lol
🤘🏽
👾👾👾
How do these compare to the Animals Pedals Tioga Road distortion?
sorry, that’s not one i’m familiar with. i’ll look into it!
@@DemosInTheDark Mike Hermans has a nice demo, but not a comparison! I'd love to hear your take.
what are those pickups? :o
lollar firebirds
Woodcutter 100%!!!
you bet!
Try putting it in the loop
1967 fender bassman has no loop.
Don't really hear a big difference and that's awesome.
it "feels" really similar too. they did a great job!
For the price Rat wins... They're almost identical...the woodcutter is an expensive take on a proco rat after all.
aha, BUT that’s a vintage lm308 rat, which is more expensive than the woodcutter. 😉

haha! fair. just wanted to point out that detail.
A vintage Proco is actually more expensive, if you look on reverb
