    God, I love the RAT so much. It just sounds like every great alternative/hardcore record I grew up listening to. Great demo. If I didn't already have my dream RAT from Kinnatone, the Rattler would be up there.

    I just got this pedal and my first impression was that unboxing it makes you feel like a VIP. Everything is really premium. Build quality is insane and the sound is incredible, but I wish it had the filter control. It does seem a little thicker on the lows, but because of this I'm not sure it can fully replace a RAT's unique EQ.

    jam pedal is a nice sounding rat. it seems to have more low end and more volume, but is the same pedal as the proco.. great sounding distortion... i am just curios about the feeling when playing both, if there is any difference "under your hand" while playing between the two...

  • @innocentoctave
    @innocentoctave 3 года назад +2

    I'd give this one to the Rattler, but it's very close. The extra gain is actually usable, and the sound overall is a little clearer and more detailed. Whether you would hear the difference in a band context I doubt.

    Hey Ryan, with in the opening and such a week theme you gonna nail it... and your likes and followers gonna grow fast because you are doing a great job. I ll be excited to see every episode. I always wanted a shootout of all those pedals, beside the red one that did not know it.. I m considering for a couple of months now to pull the trigger on the gorilla or iron horse.. the woodcutter is relatively complicated to buy it in Europe. I bought the Rattler and sent it back cause it was cutting too much low end for my taste... but it had a great clipping and feel... I could say Rattler is silky and rat is crispy.. For the moment I have a Rat 2 op07, You dirty Rat, a moded Rat 2 with a bass boost and a mooer black secret.. I love all of them.. sooner or later I ll have to buy 2 or 3 pedals of your reviews..because Rat is my favourite clipping in front of my Hot rod deluxe made in USA... maybe you could include 1981 even I m not sure if they have LM 308 inside.. Keep the nice themes man.. I m getting a big fan of your channel!!

    • @DemosInTheDark
      @DemosInTheDark  3 года назад +2

      when i was in planning stages, i considered doing something that would include the DRV as i have a number of them in my collection and enjoy the pedal quite a bit. that said, it isn't a LM308 and i thought that was a good trial for the series. if it goes well, i was thinking about doing a series about pedals that started as a rat, but then changed dramatically for 2022. that would include stuff like the DRV and Motel from Pine Box Customs. thanks for your continued support!

    Great demo. The ProCo holds its own, in my opinion. But, in my experience, the Rattler sounds a lot better in the low/medium gain settings. The differences are subtle, but if you don’t mind paying 2-3 times more, the Rattler is more versatile than the ProCo. I run my Rattler with the gain low/medium and hit it with a Tube Screamer for high gain, which is glorious. Killer pedal.

    Stack two rats and listen.. I use two three version switchable Rat clones, ones set to normal Rat the other on Turbo volume at 9 oclock tone almost off gain on the turbo noon and gain on the normal at around ten o'clock..
    Arion SAD-1 Analog Delay set at a slight barely noticeable level to just give the sound some live projection ambiance Then a Boss GE-7 EQ through a Fender Deluxe Reverb with Celestion Vintage 30..
    Amp volume at 10 o'clock, treble at 7 o'clock and bass at 9 o'clock reverb around 8- 9 o'clock. EQ is subjective to each personal use and amp.
    I use most of the left end all the way up as the rats together suck some bass, mid boost in the middle mid high boost around two to three notches.
    Les Paul Custom Burst buckers and I'm getting every sweet honking sound of the 70's and 80's Marshall comes to mind.

  • @JinxRemoving
    @JinxRemoving 3 года назад

    You had me at RAT + Bassman. Can't wait for the rest of these! To my ears the OG RAT was more unhinged/chaotic at the higher gains and the Rattler a touch more controlled, and at lower gains the RAT seemed a little bit more midrangey compared to the thicker voice of the Rattler but as you say, both sounded great. I'm going to be particularly interested in the Skinner Box video as that's the one I have and I'm running it with a Fender Bassbreaker 45 Head which has the '59 Bassman circuit in it so not far off the testing rig for these videos.

    @PendelSteven 3 года назад

    1:56 That said, the Rattler is based on the 308N and the Iron Horse for example on the 308IC. I'm just saying don't stare yourself blind on the chip! It's not even the same chip technically! The Rat sound is about the architecture! However, different components make for a different variant, but the key is not in the 308 chip. And the builders are not using THE 308 chip, they are using A 308 chip. Not that it matters to me, but technically they are not using the same chip, if you find that so important...

    • @DemosInTheDark
      @DemosInTheDark  3 года назад

      totally. honestly, with all of the rat variations out there, i was looking for a way to narrow down my list, otherwise this series would be a year long. so, i whittled it down to 308x(x).

    If you ever get a chance to get your hands on one, I'd bet you'd like the Shin's Music 308DRV pedal. A really fantastic Rat. It does the classic Rat stuff but in a much more "natural," articulate way. You can really hear what's happening on the fretboard without it being overtly tamed. More responsive to dynamics than a typical Rat. I find it very similar to the Mostortion in that way but with a decidedly Rat color/tonal pallet. It also "cleans" up in a really full and interesting way when the gain knob is backed down below 10 o'clock.
    All that said, you can't go wrong, it's such a fantastic circuit. Half the fun with the older Rats is the differences from one unit to the next. Jam, as per usual, did a great job with the circuit too. It's a dead on LM308 Rat but as you said, with way more headroom and better low end retention. The top end is also "clearer" without being brighter/sharper (if that makes sense) which is really important to me with any dirt box or amp. It's really all anyone would ask for in a modern remake of a classic vintage dirt pedal.
    Also, idc what builders say about the importance/impact or lack thereof in regards to what OpAmp is used, the LM308 is *the* Rat chip. Alot of times maybe you'll "feel" it a bit more so than you hear it but I've always preferred the 308 over the op07.
    Cool demo 👌💯⚡

      @@DemosInTheDark Oh man! You definitely gotta check out Shin's Music stuff! I got turned onto them by Dave Phillips at LA Sound Design. Shin Suzuki is a renowned tech and now pedal builder in Japan. He made his name by having studied and worked on as many or more Dumble amps as anyone besides Alex Howie Dumble himself. He now makes pedals some of his own design and some based on classic circuits. His most popular are his "Dumbloid" overdrive pedals of which there are a few different models (the higher gain "Overdrive Special" being my favorite). He's built custom ordered units for players like Isaiah Sharkey, Ritchie Sambora and Pino Palladino. As different as all his drives and boosts are the common thread that runs through them is they are remarkably dynamic and uncompressed. So much so that when you first play them it "feels" as though they are responding strangely but within an hour of playing them you quickly never want to go back to anything else. All totally handwired with the only downside being that a couple of the Dumbloid circuits are "gooped" a'la a Klon but they're built pretty rock solid. They can be pricey to buy here in America if you don't have any Japanese friends to score one for you there and send it over but I think they are totally worth it. He also makes the best volume pedals on the planet imo.

    the Rattler and Rattler+ are the best sounding Rat types i’ve heard, and i’d prefer them to a vintage Rat even for that more authentic Rat tone. that said, i’ve personally fallen in love with the 1981 DRV, which has something special on the very low end of the gain range and an amazing note clarity and distinction even at higher gain settings. what it doesn’t do, however, is that sick fuzzy thing that the Rat does when it’s dimed. i’d love to see you demo a 1981 if you ever get your hands on one!
