How Eva Moskowitz Outmuscled the Teachers Union

- In November 2003, Eva Moskowitz, then a freshman member of the New York City Council, held explosive public hearings about how union contracts imposed inane work rules on public schools. The city's political establishment was astonished.
Mosowitz-a former history professor, public school teacher, and self-proclaimed liberal, whose politics up until that point seemed to resemble those of every other Democratic politician in New York-was sacrificing her political career to take on organized labor. Exposing the consequences of teacher union contracts was a direct affront to the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), which wields enormous influence in New York City elections.
Moskowitz didn't pussyfoot. At one point in the hearings, she even played audio testimony from a whistleblower with a disguised voice. She said that many of her sources declined to appear because they feared union retribution. She also went toe-to-toe with Randi Weingarten, the UFT's confrontational leader.
Two years later, when Moskowitz ran for Manhattan Borough President, Weingarten and the UFT mobilized against her and sunk her candidacy. So Moskowitz left politics for the time being; if she couldn't transform the system from within, she would build an alternative to the public schools.
Today, Moskowitz is the founder and CEO of Success Academy, which is the city's largest and most successful charter school network. With 32 schools around New York City-staffed by a non-union teaching force-Success Academy posted test results last year that astounded education policy experts.
Meanwhile, Moskowitz and her charter school allies started building a powerful coalition to counter the outsized political influence of organized labor. In March, when New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) tried to squash Success Academy's expansion plans, Moskowitz bused 11,000 charter school parents and kids up to the state capital in Albany to protest-and New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo came out in support. De Blasio retreated. Success Academy could move forward with its expansion plans after all, and state lawmakers quickly passed a bill to protect charter schools from future interference by the mayor.
Reason TV's Nick Gillespie sat down with Eva Moskowitz to talk about why her schools are so successful, whether her model is scalable, how labor contracts hurt schools, and what moved her to sacrifice her political career to bring attention to the corrosive influence of unions on public education.

It's refreshing to see a Liberal that recognizes that Union leadership doesn't really care. And has fought to do what she thinks is best.
Apparently she failed to fully assimilate into the left's Borg Collective and managed to maintain some individual thought. Maybe some inoculation could be developed from her before Hive Queen DeBlasio has her exterminated.

I've heard more than one person out there seeing what they believe to be the signs of the collapse of the educational system as we know it... and as you say, it can't happen fast enough.
Once people can pick and choose from educational choices outside of government-approved schools, the indoctrination machine loses its most critical dragnet.

The only union I support is my local credit union, which really isn't a union; just a small bank without shareholders.
And it's a tax free entity, so no bank can compete with it.
Had an older friend who belonged to the Longshoremans Union, so asked him about unions. He would say, "they are a necessary evil." He grew up poor, and later knew the brutal work history of the men who worked the docks. Workers sure did need some kind of decent support.
There are shareholders, you are one. That's why your account is called a share account. Each member is a an owner of the credit union.

In the past they had an important function, but there are labor laws in each state that protect workers that didn't exist when unions came about. Medium and large companies have full time employees who's sole function is to make sure the company is abiding by the laws.
I also support aligator cookies for sick elephants over the age of male unions.
The thing I liked about Success Academy is that they actually sent me an email to deny my job application. They actually respected me.

I am quite aware not all Charter schools are good. Some are crap. I support any school that has good teachers that want to teach kids, and not indoctrinate them with silly things.
DiBlasio, and the teachers union block the success of children? Are you kidding me? That is evil. How could you even want to do that? How could you sleep at night?

if she had not been willing to put her career on the line and lose her job she never would have gotten anywhere with this. good for her, but it shows how negative and destructive these teachers unions are by nature.
I love how people use her salary as a cudgel to attack her....she's running a very successful school helping kids that otherwise would be chewed up and spit out by the public system, she's friggin' earned that salary. The salaries of useless public education figures are an utter scandal when they are captaining a sinking ship. Hypocrites.
It's an interesting attack too considering members of the bureaucracy in cities like New York also make huge salaries too lol

Unions were needed back in the 20th century, and may still be needed around the world; but in the United States, with most major companies and industries having protections for workers mandated by law, they're more of a hindrance than a help.
Its why our prices are so high and we have no jobs. I have a feeling that if they were gone, the pendulum would swing the other way again. I just really wish people would compromise on their own as if they werent such greedy pos's.

Gotta stop those greedy capitalists! Unions are so virtuous that they're incapable of greed or corruption.
This is so funny and scary how right it is. They criticize capitalism for how greedy it is but these unions use government in order to protect themselves and be a cartel. Been part of the union shop for 11 years and I can honestly say that unions of all types of shapes and sizes are bad for the worker, bad for the company, bad for the customer and just bad all around.
Why have you stayed for so long?
Fair question.
I suppose I really wanted to make something out of it. I wanted to rally the drivers and get Pepsi to pay us an hourly rate so we could be properly compensated for the overtime they forced us to work.
I COULD have left at any time but the cowards I worked with must not have known how to survive on their own without the company.
Anyways I’m getting off topic of your question.

I never got it how charter schools were s'posed to be cherry picking when they have a lottery. OTOH any kid who applies to a charter starts out with parents who want the child to do well, which is probably the most important part.
They don’t have enough money or space for the deluge of parents who want their kids in the school
I think it's because they have the ability to expell students, which public schools don't have, as I understand it.

WOW Mrs. Eva is one smart woman. Thank you for your service.
Do I really need to be a union member just so that I can work as a janitor?
i knew a janitorial company that was unionised. thank gawd. no longer could supervisors and management hit the employees, utter threats, force them to pay for their cleaning supplies, withhold pay. they were still paid little better than minimum wage and had really little for benefits but they had a better workplace environment - just the way they were treated and spoken to...
the first two offences i and two other co-workers saw happen. about three weeks after they unionised we were called into HR and a pair of detectives wanted to question us about the assaults (2) and threatening to fire them if they complained to police. we cooperated.
sometimes there is more going on than meets the eye. i don't think you need to be in a union to be a janitor but it could help your cause...
A lot of unions go too far, but look at how fast food workers are treated. With out unions I bet that's how the janitors and painters would be treated
Collective bargaining is a great idea. What the unions actually are in most places is complete BS.
Gotta love fighters like her
I love teachers/schools like this. This is what teaching is about!
How great it is to see that these students are protected from deranged ideology and useless activism so they can focus on learning what they need to know to become what they wish to be.
Wow.....teaching reading in school with expectation, who knew????
it all starts with the parents. providing kids with proper nutrition, regular sleep schedules, scheduling study time, and providing an environment for kids to study (no TV, yelling, screaming, someone to help with homework).
Parenting, Parenting, Parenting.
I've never heard anything good about that Mayor.
Keep on the pressure to keep charter schools. Helps to educate kids so they may become self sufficient and not end up in poverty once they graduate from high school.
Charter schools give each teacher a greater degree of freedom and independence within their own classroom in order to meet the individual demands to each of their students. I fully know and believe in every teacher's ability to properly teach without having to adhere to a huge bureaucracy which governs what, when, and how they must teach any subject. Charter schools represent the solution to restructuring the public education system in every state, while using the same amount of funding to empower every teacher to make their own decisions without throwing more money at our failing schools, but yet again excepting better results. As anyone can see from the video, majority of the students enrolled in NYC charter schools come from lower income households who actually need the assistance to become educated in order to emerge from poverty. As someone having graduated from high school less than 5 years ago and having learned at an accelerated pace in college within the realm of electrical engineering which exceeds anything public school ever exposed me to, I know the increased rigor which charter schools provide work much better.
I remember how my folks had me learn to read over the summer before 1st grade. The books were not special, just the ones they read when they went to 1st grade. That year I was tested as having a 7th grade level reading level. what happened to 6 years?
It's not just Union vs Non Union that creates the difference in results. It's a factor, but there's another at play. Charter school students represent a different demographic, that is: the parents of these children pursued getting their child into a charter school. That speaks volumes. The parents of these children are putting a concerted effort into maximizing their child's education; They actually care.
That's why my child goes to private school in Mexico. My children come out light years ahead of their peers in college.
I began reading before the 2nd grade. By 6th grade I had read out the school library and the local public library. I dropped out of high school (perhaps because of boredom) and entered the Air Force in the Vietnam period. My first job out of the AF was in high energy nuclear research. I became a self taught electronics engineer and became quite successful. At one point I was making a quarter of a million dollars a year. I built ground breaking medical instruments and amoung other things a communications conversion board that was installed in the space station. Reading really is the key to success in life and today my grandchildren in the fourth grade can barely read the simplest sentence. The teachers unions must go. Any and all unions that have the slightest control of schools must go or else the American dream will go. Only top notch principals and teachers should have ANY say in the education of children.
My new favorite liberal 😌 -a conservative
Public Schools in America are completely broken. In a city like New York, where the teacher's union contract favors the teacher in every possible way, where you can get a TENURED POSITION in two years, there is a 19-25% attrition rate of teachers in the first two years. Now, Attrition includes firings and resignations, but as we know, even in cases of sexual or violent outburst, it's very difficult to fire a teacher. So why are 20% or teachers quitting in the first two years? These are people who are promised a PAYCHECK for LIFE if they stick out two years. But people with integrity cannot remain in a system that harms children in favor of the pocketbooks of the teachers and administration. Tear down the government school system, they have failed us utterly.
Any good thing can get infected. This story is a breath of fresh air.
Listen to what she says at 3:16 - This is what the frontline public school teacher faces every day. The pushback from elected officials and the bureaucracy that keeps her from opening more schools is also felt by the teachers who would love to raise the level of rigor.
I love and agree with what she is saying! My honest wish is the PUBLIC SCHOOLS would get it together and properly educate our children!
Going from public to charter is a step in the right direction.Lets keep going and make more private schools, possibly give parents vouchers from the tax coffers if they want to pull their kids out of public and put them in a successful school instead. Or kill the school tax altogether.
I totally applaud her for going toe to toe with unions.

That is thinking like a CEO, like a business owner in the private sector. Ihop can't expect to stay in business if it costs as much as a sushi restaurant and serves food that is worse than McDonalds. Public schools on the other hand have continued to stay in businesses giving worse and worse results for the money.
The problem with charter schools is they only fix the problems for some kids. Theres still all the kids who don't have parents that care enough to sign them up. It doesn't solve the bigger problem. It leaves behind the kids at most risk. It's taking out the good kids that have a chance and leaving the ones that don't to fend for themselves while calling it a success. No. As long as there's kids graduating public schools functionally illiterate we don't have success. This just puts a bandaid on it a broken leg. We have to fix the public schools.
God's speed and safety! You're a courageous person! You should run our country's schools and break the corrupt teacher's union who are killing our minorities.

Charter Schools and Their Enemies by Thomas Sowell. I had no idea how low the test scores were in public schools. He exposes how the teachers unions are being favored over the needs of the children. The way out of poverty is through a better education. Charter schools need more funding and I like competition in schools because it leads to innovation and improvements. This is a huge issue. We need school choice. New York has 212 buildings that are half full. These buildings need to be filled with Charter School students. Let’s think our children first.
Why would you assume public schools want to teach kids? I assume their intent is to dampen childhood education...
Godspeed to this woman on her way

Absolutely no public service job in America should be allowed to have unions. Unions always help to destroy the very people they purport to help. Because greed and corruption eventually take over. I belong to a public service union; and I speak from experience.
Eva, please expand Success Academies to California!
Abolish state education.
No no no, the problem with American schools is that they are underfunded. Clearly this is why they are out performed by countries that spend less including some rather poor countries. It's called logic people! This problem will go away as soon as we increase spending on public schools and teacher's salaries as it always has in the past.
Also just because these charter schools are working doesn't mean we should support them. What black children need isn't proper education it's more welfare checks and white people checking their privilege. The goal isn't to change the paradigm so that a young black man is no longer more likely to see a prison cell than a college classroom but to provide job security for the *teachers, the truly oppressed minority!*
We need to stop building these charter schools that make teachers look bad just because our schools are a joke the rest of the world tells behind our backs and go back to building more prisons, to give these children a place to live and work after they drop out.
Ozbrithian we spend the 3rd most on education in the world just behind Switzerland and Norway. It's really easy to find this information online. Try posting the truth went you go on a rant. The problem is unions protecting lousy teachers. Their job is safe no matter how they preform their jobs. My whole family , parents, wife and both my sister's are teachers in public school districts so in no way am I bashing teachers I consider most teachers saints for the job they do for so little in return. That's why the unions are falling apart due to right to work laws. Most teachers I know maybe all of them have dropped out of their union.

As much as I wish to agree with you. If you have the greatest school it would mount to a hill of beans if you have parents that do not care.
The first paragraph is a great example of Poe's Law.
By the second and third paragraph, thankfully, the parody becomes clear.
In my experience teaching; if you get successful results with kids regarded as " unreachable "- you will be hated for it . By doing so you hold a mirror up.
I am 100% pro organized labor. But absolutely hate the teachers union. I am a 35 year skilled tradesmen. My wife taught 20 years union, and 10 years in a charter school. Neither this lady, or the teachers union is telling the truth. She said she could choose to pay teachers more. I can guarantee she does not choose to. Charter schools where we live pay about 10k less than public schools. And most of them are profit driven. Not student driven. The option that's best for a student is generally not feasible for most families. Home schooling.
Private sector unions are fine but public sector unions like teacher unions, who are funded by U.S. taxpayer dollars, have got to go.
I am glad Mrs.Moskowitz has made a drastic change for the better.
Public educators have been giving up on literacy for generations. It's as simple as that. Reading and most importantly writing determine a childs future ability to perform in education.

As a liberal teacher I'll tell you that both political parties have contributed, in their uniquely damaging ways, to the current mess.
How does the combination of "mayoral and union acceptance" not clue people in that the system is completely corrupt? Both of those parties have potentially massive moral hazard problems.
Public sector unions must be abolished in their entirety.
This video is from 2014 and we are still fighting over this and people are just NOW pulling their children out of public schools.
