I literally felt panic through most of this video! This was such a great lesson on letting watercolor be watercolor. My goodness, what I have thought were "ruined" paintings in the past were just lessons waiting to be learned. Thank you!

This is such an important tutorial! Capturing the glow from a streetlight, a backlit window, or distant sunset - some of the toughest things to create and get right! After watching this, I had to go back to the start and click forward again (I did it about 10 times) just to see the progression... unreal. Thanks for this one, Steve! So great! :)

I'm still pretty new to watercolor, since I've only been doing it for a little over 9 months seriously, and I've caught myself running into the problem of a too-dark or too-thickly layered sky numerous times, and it ends up looking muddy and unrealistic. This is a great tutorial on keeping all of that fresh.
Thank you so much for the work you do. Every time I watch one of your videos, I stop feeling discouraged and start feeling inspired to paint!

Steve, as a faithful, longtime subscriber I've spent many of my formative painting hours with you in the past three years. This was quite special. To watch you attend to the challenges of an upright work surface was akin to watching a skilled tightrope walker suddenly find himself on the tightrope. So informative and my heart was in my throat a few times with excitement at the perils and dangers you skillfully maneuvered. To a lovely end (again). Ongoing thanks for all you do, and how well you do it! I too am re-watching this, paint brush in hand, surface FLAT (tho' you don't get the drama of the drips as you demonstrated if you work it too flat)...

Well Steve not only was this a very good demo but I got a couple of really good belly laughs too. I love when true artists show they make mistakes. It gives the beginning artist hope. Your best quote was “well I didn’t intend to make this a what not to do video” . I love the painting but it was almost perfect when the bright colors where still in the foreground . It looked like a body of water with reflections. Anyway I’m going to try this soon as my watercolor sunsets well to be kind to myself - are awful 😂

I've been working on sunsets for the last week. I received permission from a local photographer to paint a sunset with 2 sailboats in the foreground. I was more panicked by the sailboats, but quickly learned it is the background that had me in turmoil. Six sheets of watercolor paper later (front and back) and a dozen RUclips videos, I found your "Sunset Glow" video. I've been a fan of yours for the last 4 years and knew in a heartbeat you could help me. As I watched your tutorial, I felt panic more than once while watching this vid...."hey I thought....this is exactly what I was experiencing". Muddy looking background, paint running, paper rippling! Your calm demur and constantly moving hand helped me realize one very important thing. Don't feel like you have to accomplish your background in one attempt. I took the best looking practice piece of mine and controlled all the paint from there on. I misted, I dabbed, I stroked, I swept my hand. Light strokes, soft edges, and using a my rendition of a sterling edwards brush, I was able to resurrect a passable copy. Onto the final piece. I didn't feel like rushing. The one trick you taught us was, let the paper dry, mist and work in sections. The misting won't disturb the lower layers, and glazing can go on, layer after layer. Whew, what an important piece of knowledge you shared here. Thank you!!
