I literally felt panic through most of this video! This was such a great lesson on letting watercolor be watercolor. My goodness, what I have thought were "ruined" paintings in the past were just lessons waiting to be learned. Thank you!
The little reflective ponds are my favorite part of the composition and they weren't even planned! With watercolor it is impossible NOT to be creative.
Thank you, beautiful. Love playing with clouds too.
But when we( us rainy weather people) do have sunsets...they are Absolutely Breathtaking!!
Thank you for teaching us how to capture the beautiful glow of a sunset. The painting is lovely!
Some of the best watercolor clouds I've even seen! Completely agree, glazing is wonderful! Thank you, really enjoyed this one!
First time watching you paint. Brought me back to my childhood, when I’d come after school and watch Bob Ross. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent!
Thank you greatly. I always pick up pointers when watching you paint. It's fortunate to have all you excellent artists teaching and informing us.
This one is really good! I had an ahhh haa moment. So valuable. Thank you
Thank you for the instruction and the verse! Always speaks to me! Reminds me that His word is alive!
Thank you so much. The sunset is gorgeous! You are a master at correcting problems that come up and turning them into masterpieces!
You make it look so simple. Love the way you added the layers to give a greater dimension!
My favorite painting I've seen you do. Thanks for always amazing me, entertaining me and most importantly for inspiring me.
Thank you for showing us how to make the sunset glow. Great job!
So that's how it's done! I've been wanting to paint some of the dramatic desert sunsets I've photographed as the clouds opened up when our afternoon storms moved on. I think your methods are just what I needed to proceed with this project. Thanks for listing the colors you used. This video is a big help. Thanks!
That came out so beautiful. Just as nature intended, a splash of colors.
Absolutely Beautiful!! I’d love to see more of this type of work. Thanks Steve😊
Stunning, love the shadows and light playing between the clouds. Always a joy to watch you paint and I do learn something new every time. A big thanks.
Amazing.. Beautiful technique and wonderful to watch how the glow comes up with the intermingling clouds
This goes to show us all that even a painting that initially looks like it is heading downhill can be salvaged and looks beautiful when finished. Especially when you know the correct techniques to compensate when the paint has a Mind of its own. Cheers!
So helpful to see how you handle the "mistakes". Beautiful painting. Thanks!
Wow! How beautiful! Thank you for sharing your time, talent and tips with us.
Absolutely the Best Sunset I have seen painted on RUclips 🙏🏼
Beautiful and very educational to boot. Thank you again for your time, joy and willingness to get us all painting.
This was a lot of help. I'm a detail-type a personality that is fighting to work more 'loose painting' into my work. I love the way you did the sky at first-into the foreground so that when you did the foreground, the reflection was already there. Thanks, Barbara
This is such an important tutorial! Capturing the glow from a streetlight, a backlit window, or distant sunset - some of the toughest things to create and get right! After watching this, I had to go back to the start and click forward again (I did it about 10 times) just to see the progression... unreal. Thanks for this one, Steve! So great! :)
Thanks Mark. Encouraging comments as usual. Glad you picked up on the application of how this technique would work in so many glowing light situations. Thanks as always for your welcome and attentive input.
Jetpens high quality watercolor sketchbooks
Absolutely loved the gradual "building" of the glow and showed me to be bold with the colors as I initially thought OMG! such bright red and orange! But I loved how you blended them with your glazing brush to create and end up with a brilliant glow effect. Thank you Steve for teaching us! 💖
Great video with generous , spontaneous comments, dealing with “mistakes”. Turned out great, Steve!
Sensational!
Love this bold painting!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Beautiful and inspiring. Can’t wait to try it. I so look forward to these videos.
So glad to see you validate this paper! I bought a small pad, the 5x7, a few weeks ago, and love it! It’s really thick, great cold press texture, and it wasn’t so pricey that I feel guilty using it for more casual work.
Fabulous painting. Thank you for sharing your techniques.
Lately, I've been watching these relaxing informative videos before bedtime instead of the news & it helps me sleep better and more creatively. Sometimes, however, if I'm not sleepy, I get excited to try the techniques right away.
I know aren't they great ? So much better than watching news and politics . it is a nice break something positive to concentrate on …
Great water colour tutorial. Very helpful
Oh my goodness... I just love this one!
One of your best videos and a truly stunning painting that just draws the eye in. Thanks for all the technique tips and for showing us the process. I especially like the fact that you openly share your mistakes with us. It somehow makes it seem all so much more attainable.
I loved this lesson and learned so much! Thanks again Steve!
Beautiful, and so helpful. Years ago, the first time I dabbled in watercolor, an artist whose shop I frequented commented "Only God can paint a sunset." True, but some artists have the skill to come close. You're definitely one of those artists!
Beautiful. So peaceful.
Anyone else like me automatically raised their fingers to the screen to blot those runs? I was totally involved with this atmospheric work. 😅😅😅
Beautiful sky & amazing distance. Love it 😍 Thank you 🍒
Lovely variety of shades of color and value. Thanks.
I am so happy that I found your work!!!! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and skills!!
Gorgeous clouds. I am so bad at clouds. So many great tips to get past the hot mess stage. Usually your demos are way to advanced for me. This one is right up my alley. Thanks Steve.
Thank you for wonderful layering of clouds! I love all the variations of color, you make it look so easy!
Truly beautiful this sunset scene !
Wow amazing working those clouds
This is a fantastic video. I love how you turned things around! Thank you !
This is such a valuable tutorial as all of your tutorials !
So glad you found Reese early on in the video, as I immediately noticed his absence. Very much like the shape of the clouds and the overall mood of the painting. The after-thought little ponds worked out well.
This is so beautiful!! I’m trying to amp up my watercolor skills so my portfolio for college applications is solid, and your videos have helped a lot. The technique you use is really great, and seeing you paint helps me improve my own works! Thanks!
Beautiful sky, Steve. I love to paint clouds. I learned a lot from this one! Especially how you used the spray on the sky. Fun!!!
Thank you! Your work inspires my creativity. I really appreciate your style, and I look forward to learning more from you. 🌲
Beautifully done! My clouds always look so one dimensional, thank you for this.
Splendid video! So inspiring and immensely helpful! Thank you so much!
This was an amazing tutorial! Thank you! It’s absolutely beautiful. I feel I learned a lot from this.
How awesome is it that you have in a SC shirt! I live in SC too. I love this channel. I am new to watching but it's amazing the Gift God has blessed you with AND the ability to teach and inspire! God bless you!
Hahaha, yes we’ve had a few rainy days here. Great video and Beautiful painting. 👍🏽 I picked up quite a few tips. Thanks for sharing Steve.
I am speechless of this painting process you have shared! It’s a jewel, a real jewel!
Thanks Paul & Reeses
My name is Steve but thanks for the kind words!
I just love you technique. I got a picture from a friend who had a great sunset that was Awesome. I just didn't know how, and here you were. I love your teaching and methods.
wow I'll be honest, after the sunset I wasn't sure how it would turn out but this one is amazing. Those clouds look so good.
Thank You Steve !
I like a lot! Beautiful, You make everything simple and beautiful 😍
I love your tutorials I learn so much & so appreciate you. Thank you.
This entire painting is beautiful but your sky is a masterpiece. Wow! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for sharing your incredible talent, I learn from your insight and experience, I relax to your very soothing voice and I am inspired to try because watercolor has a mind of it's own, basically I am addicted to your tutorials!
I'm still pretty new to watercolor, since I've only been doing it for a little over 9 months seriously, and I've caught myself running into the problem of a too-dark or too-thickly layered sky numerous times, and it ends up looking muddy and unrealistic. This is a great tutorial on keeping all of that fresh.
Thank you so much for the work you do. Every time I watch one of your videos, I stop feeling discouraged and start feeling inspired to paint!
Matthew Palmer water color
This was fascinating to watch! Love start to finish paintings on your channel, and I really appreciate the way you share what you know. When you started putting on that last glaze of orange I was screaming NOOOOOOOOOOO at the screen, but that was until I realized you were right - it truly did make the painting better even though I didn't think it could get any better! Anyway, learned a lot, so thanks again :)
Steve, as a faithful, longtime subscriber I've spent many of my formative painting hours with you in the past three years. This was quite special. To watch you attend to the challenges of an upright work surface was akin to watching a skilled tightrope walker suddenly find himself on the tightrope. So informative and my heart was in my throat a few times with excitement at the perils and dangers you skillfully maneuvered. To a lovely end (again). Ongoing thanks for all you do, and how well you do it! I too am re-watching this, paint brush in hand, surface FLAT (tho' you don't get the drama of the drips as you demonstrated if you work it too flat)...
SquadioDataMJ Wow! That’s bringing watercolor to life!! I need to rewind!
Absolutely beautiful!
Magnificent! What a gift!
Finally!!! Thanks for this.
I've watched many of your videos. This was one of my favs. I've learned so much from you. Bought the paint you recommended, paper and brushes. Really learning to love watercolor painting because of you!
Wow, I so much enjoyed this process!
You are one of the watercolor artists on RUclips I admire the most 😊
Thank you so much!! this is a valuable tutorial which I will be watching over and over again!
You make it look so easy! It’s really amazing how you can get the watercolor to “paint” for you like that! Beautifully done my friend, thanks for sharing👍
Beautiful painting. The orange used for the initial wash is a lovely colour.
The artists of the 21st century are fantastic. I can barely contain the inspiration. That painting is most beautiful. The Dimensions of the sky is exceeding. Just excited for watching the entire process. And Humbled for your instructions. Thank you. All the best to you. ♥️👍👍👍
Thanks, Steve . Beautiful!
Steve, Thanks again to you for your great tutorials. I watched this twice and did two paintings. I especially appreciate the fact you talk through them, tell us of your mistakes and how you fix them. This adds a great deal to your lesson for me. I thank you very much and appreciate the opportunity at my age (70) to learn this late in life. It is very uplifting and I appreciate your help.

Houston, Texxas,
Well Steve not only was this a very good demo but I got a couple of really good belly laughs too. I love when true artists show they make mistakes. It gives the beginning artist hope. Your best quote was “well I didn’t intend to make this a what not to do video” . I love the painting but it was almost perfect when the bright colors where still in the foreground . It looked like a body of water with reflections. Anyway I’m going to try this soon as my watercolor sunsets well to be kind to myself - are awful 😂
Absolutely love this!
Loved how this turned out! Sunsets are so enchanting and I like the way the puddles made their own form in the middle ground there. I have the black velvet rounds in several sizes but would love to try a flat wash brush. It seems to do a lovely job. Enjoyed this! Great video as always Steve!
Wow, just gorgeous!!
A blending brush! That's such a great tool...wish I'd seen that done before! Got to get one of those.
Excellent, love seeing your techniques. Just learning - this was great!
Thank you - I love your tutorials - so helpful.
Loved this tutorial video Steve. I usually work small and with heaps of details, I'm going to give something like this a try because I love the final product, especially like the orange glazing in the clouds.
Loving this fantasy watercolour with gouache.MORE PLEASE !You really are a legend.Sending love from Australia
It does look blazing ! Nice!
You’re wonderful and make it look so easy. I learn so much from you, thanks.
Just wow!
A lovely painting, very encouraging.. thank you
Thank you! Beautiful really appreciated you sharing this!
you really know how to play with colors and the viewers' mind////That is a spectacular masterpiece ...
Wonderful - can't wait to try it out!
I've been working on sunsets for the last week. I received permission from a local photographer to paint a sunset with 2 sailboats in the foreground. I was more panicked by the sailboats, but quickly learned it is the background that had me in turmoil. Six sheets of watercolor paper later (front and back) and a dozen RUclips videos, I found your "Sunset Glow" video. I've been a fan of yours for the last 4 years and knew in a heartbeat you could help me. As I watched your tutorial, I felt panic more than once while watching this vid...."hey I thought....this is exactly what I was experiencing". Muddy looking background, paint running, paper rippling! Your calm demur and constantly moving hand helped me realize one very important thing. Don't feel like you have to accomplish your background in one attempt. I took the best looking practice piece of mine and controlled all the paint from there on. I misted, I dabbed, I stroked, I swept my hand. Light strokes, soft edges, and using a my rendition of a sterling edwards brush, I was able to resurrect a passable copy. Onto the final piece. I didn't feel like rushing. The one trick you taught us was, let the paper dry, mist and work in sections. The misting won't disturb the lower layers, and glazing can go on, layer after layer. Whew, what an important piece of knowledge you shared here. Thank you!!
This is beautiful Steve. I really enjoyed this video. I was just watching the most amazingly beautiful sunset last evening here in Guam. It was filled with streaks of dusty gray violet, neon pink, and soft yellow and orange. I was thinking of how I’d love to paint it and then you posted this video. Thanks Steve and many blessings to you. 💞💫y
Kim Leon-Guerrero : Yes, there are amazingly colorful sunsets in Guam. Still trying to capture in watercolor.
You make mistakes looks so awesome and somewhat planned! So appreciate your talent and willingness to share! I am a patron and so glad to be a part of this! Learning so much!
Wow, when you added the green suddenly it all seemed to POP. What a beautiful painting. I like that you showed the mistakes. It makes us LEARN in a different way. LOVE the teachings and all the insight. Your insight of reducing the value makes so much sense. Really simple ideas, yet so incredibly important in the end result. Looking forward to trying this too. I am really liking your techniques and your teaching style. Thanks for taking the time to teach us all.
I loved watching this beautiful painting come to life ..as always you make it looks so easy to fix what would be a complete disaster for me!! As a beginner i long to find that balance and confidence..glad I found you!!
Beautiful sky
Thanks for another informative tutorial! Have a wonderful 2019!
