- I'm trying out a 100% cotton watercolor board from Crescent by doing this spontaneous landscape in a 3 color + neutral tint limited palette color scheme. Plus, I'm using the new Waffle Flower swatch stamps to create a color story card for recording color schemes that I like and might want to use again.

I couldn't have imagined the result in a million years. Amazing.
Months later and this is still my favorite painting you’ve done. The color story is just gorgeous. The layout looks much better than most of the paintings I plan out. It’s just perfect I think. I love it so much.
Outstanding, Steve! I could watch an entire channel of just these. You pack so much information and advice into them. It’s a rare mind that can be free enough to paint in abstract spontaneity, while at the same time giving detailed analysis. Watching the foreground, middle and background appear all of a sudden from random blobs is magical! Thanks, more please.
This is my favorite painting and the colors are so subtle creating a soft relaxing picture.
I really enjoy the way you force the discovery of your spontaneous watercolor creations. This one is especially an amazing work. Nice job!
Thank you so much for this video. Just returning from a week long workshop on loose uncontrolled?? Watercolour... I struggled with this concept... instructor said that tight painting was ‘old’ and too controlled, and very outdated 😢 I came home that evening and immediately looked for you on RUclips - and watched your video on “to paint loose or tight” - oh my my, that made me feel so much better about how I paint personally. You were the light in my dark day more than I could ever express!! As a ‘tight’ painter, I really wanted to try and loosen up some. I absolutely love this video, because it is very loose and spontaneous but still really beautiful. I will be trying this today. Thank you so much Steve. You are such an inspiration for me. HUGS
Sheesh! Its like a religion with some of these people. Sad. In fact, representational art and realism has been on the rise in the last few decades. Not outdated at all.
Wow ! All hail the blessed tree trunks. Nice job.
As you were putting in your washes and your water spray , letting it run and mingle , I got worried (for myself) I didn't see anything, but as soon as you put in your "sticks" it all became clear.....I have a LOT of practicing to do......devoted to do this type of painting when I start painting again......Thank you so much again!
Wow! I never cease to be amazed at your spontaneous painting techniques. Love watching you work.
brilliant video... love how this all comes together....but damn... iwatched this video at 3am in the morning and now I have an urge to paint!
It’s like magic to see you turn your drips and drops into a landscape. Beautiful. Nancy from Damascus, Oregon
Wow, wow, wow. Incredible how you pulled off this spontaneous landscape. I worried for a long time that it wasn’t going to work, but, you are amazing. It’s gorgeous and mystical. Thank you, Steve for posting your always fantastic tutorials.
It looks like a rainy day up here in this part of north central PA in the forest. Love this, Steve!
As a very new Watercolor Artist, I learn so much from your videos and see so much inspiration. So, Thank You for having such great insight to share!
Your spontaneous paintings were the trigger for me becoming a patreon. Pure magic. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the comment and for your support!
Just beautiful. Love the color combination. 👍🏼
Superbe! Magnifique...Quelle beauté ce paysage ! Merci beaucoup monsieur l artiste .
This color scheme is just stunning. Such a beautiful painting, its so relaxing to watch you work your magic.
This is the first time I've watched one of your spontaneous paintings and my mind was moving in the same direction as yours. I was seeing the need for depth and the need to soften that stark white. I couldn't have imagined you'd make something from that mess at first, but it turned out great.
I’ve watched several of your spontaneous paintings and and absolutely fascinated with the results. Inspiring. Thanks.
THIS is why I want to learn the mind of watercolor. This. Bravo!
I have to say that was very impressive. A very useful tutorial. Thanks for sharing.
There is a little bit of white paper showing through on the right between the distant treeline and land ---from here it looks like housing and with a couple of horizontal lines could add roof lines; just
how it looks from sitting in my chair. I've seen this before but checking it out again. Seeing something new each time. Cool! Really great spontaneous painting Steve.
Your so talented. That was a great demonstration. See that you used your stamps.
Beautiful. It looks like a Scottish mountain view. The colours are very Scottish. Heather and pine and rusty gold.
I'm always amazed how you do your spontaneous paintings. I couldn't figure out how you were going to turn it into a landscape. But you did it. I'm going to have to try it myself someday.
Masterful! I am almost tempted to say: "And behold - it was very good"
I absolutely loved this spontaneous landscape. Actually, I have loved all that I viewed. Your videos are so helpful, and I compliment you on your teaching methods. You are the best! Thank you for helping me so much to learn from your experience.
You should do more of these, they are amazing.
This reminds me of watching the clouds in the sky take familiar shapes right before your eyes . very fun to watch it take shape , watercolor paints all by itself .
I've been drawing and painting for years and have loved details.
After watching several of your spontaneous ones I have had a total change of heart. Being old now I'm thinking this is meant to be lol. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, art and humor.
I'm doing nothing else right now .
Tomorrow I'm going to try to do this on watercolor postcards. I love ❤ this style. I'm almost 68 and tired of doing details. Hugs from Sweden 🇸🇪 🤗
OH MY WORD....I saw a tree, but I never saw this...…..fantastic and beautiful. I would hang this in my home and be thrilled....wow.
It looked like an ink blot to me until the tree trunks were added. Than voila, a forest appeared! I love this. I will try doing one. I even have these paint colors, except for Neutral Tint. I'll use Paynes.
Gorgeous! This has to be my favorite! Beautiful color combinations. Wonderful teacher as well. Thank you Steve!
I love your videos! This one looks like someplace in Middle Earth (if you're a Hobbit fan). I have also noticed lately that you share a scripture reference at the end of each video, and I really appreciate that!
I was thinking this one wasn't going to be very good, but you turned it into beautiful. Thank you,, love it!
I did enjoy watching you painting this picture.
You have SO much talent. It's beautiful. I unfortunately am not able to visualize the end product but I sure appreciate your abilities. Thanks for this lovely painting.
It takes time and practice. I wasn't able to do it right at the start either. Talent is maybe 10% of it. But thank you for the compliment.
Steve Quiller likes Crescent Watercolor Boards. First person I heard talk about them. I like those and the Canson watercolor boards and Canson illustration board - especially when I’m using casein.
fun to watch you paint with just the three colors. great way to keep track of the colors you used. thanks as always for sharing.
You are a freak’n genius! Lol. I had to just sit and watch in awe. I could not “see” the blobs you painted could amount to anything so beautiful. I hope someday I have the gift to see what you can see. ❤
Lovely painting, reminds me very much of Scotland.
Ugh... i really need to relax with my colors.. more wet on wet. Youre an inspiration, sir
Its like you make color clouds and just paint what you see in them. And naturally you always see landscapes.
That painting turned out so cool!!! I'm new to watercolor and have never tried that kind of approach so I was interested to see what you would do with it. Very cool!!
As usual I sit and watch mesmerized as you take ??? To wow! Those soaring trees with the simple trunks are fantastic! Made me think of rural Ontario around Georgian Bay and the Group of Seven. Lost in the wilds! I want to try your triad too. I have been playing with more and more limited palette type approaches to paintings and learning a lot! Thank you! You are still my favourite channel! I learn so much from you and repeat your videos often. You are a great teacher! Please don’t ever leave! We all appreciate how hard you work to share all of this with us!
Thank you Alison!
Steve, this is absolutely beautiful! When I first looked at it I thought, what the dickens is he going to do with this?? I guess this is a lesson for those who are still learning to really look and see. Thanks so much for this. It's wonderful and a real lesson. Don't stop the Minders'! I love it!
Crazy how it all comes together...to only have your insight and imagination...
.
Thank you for your youtube videos...I have learned more from them than from all the other watercolor resources I have bought (videos, books, courses)....
OMGOSH, this is gorgeous. I've been watching your channel for a couple few years now. In that time have seen how your color style and painting style has emerged. It's been an amazing journey.
I have to try this. With a handful of commissioned paintings lately, painting has been very serious. I need a little play time right now! Thanks for the inspiration!
I simply adore the way you paint, impro is what I like more in painting and in music, thank you.
I like your method, with this board. The result is really good
Great limited color scheme. I like the misty look and the purple tree down front. It has an oriental feel. Thanks so much for this demonstration.
14 minutes in, oh I see it, I love it, huge trees with the distant background trees. Wowza! Genius.
Love, Love, Love! Three color WOW! So fun to watch you create this beauty! I’m at a lost for words to describe how much I enjoyed watching you create such a beautiful painting from just three colors! You are amazing, and I feel blessed to have found your channel. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your gift with all of us ❤️!
Absolutely gorgeous!
Steve, I really like these colors; Your videos are a beautiful way to start my day, and I have watched this one three times and am ready too try this palette with a spontaneous landscape. You make watercolor look so easy, and what you turn out is fantastic. Thank you again for sharing.
I love your spontaneous paintings. I’ve learned so much from them. Please keep them coming. Thanks again Steve. God bless
Thank you for you imagination, inspiration, bold creativity.... I could go on, but you get the idea.
Jim
More of these video please! Love the spontaneous painting and the limited color palette combo!
Years ago I used this board for all my watercolors. Until they started having trouble with bubbling of the attached paper to the backing and then also spotting of paper due to sizing issues. Glad to see they are manufacturing it with no apparent defects again. I really used to love it's non warping and the smoother cold press surface. I may have to try it again. Thanks for sharing Steve and once again, I really love the limited palette and great color combos you create!
Your spontaneous landscapes never seize to amaze me! I hope I find the courage to just throw some paint on a paper, and even get something sensible out of it :D Those grey-green'ish colors are beautiful!
These spontaneous paintings are so inspiring, I love them.. thanks so much for sharing your amazing techniques.
WOW 😳, I just watch you develop a painting in amazement. I'm going to practice on some less expensive paper in smaller sizes. Also will purchase some of this watercolor board. Thanks for the review and tutorial. It's also nice to know that a seasoned artist like yourself, buys art supplies in local places. At reasonable prices.😃oh and I've seen that Waffle flower swatch used by a watercolor artist I follow, Lindsay Werich, The Frugal Crafter.
Excellent work Steve! I like these effects.
Stunning. I agree that it looks planned, not spontaneous. Just beautiful ! Thanks
This is just amazing. I love how you came to the final painting from color on paper. Just amazing. The painting is absolutely beautiful!
You paint so much artistic and nice with a endlees knowing about the Materials, very interessting👌thank you.
enjoy watching what you pull from these dabs and doodles.......like staring up at clouds and finding pictures, or paint peeling off the side of a house can leave a mural if you look hard enough.....thanks steve.........back to see the end results.
If I didn't see it with my own eyes, I would not have believed that some random washes were transformed into a misty forest.
I love your spontaneous paintings. I have tried this technique and am pleased with how they turn out (most of the time). It is a good way to lose some of the "tightness" that happens when you and makes you see things differently. Thank you for your tutorials. Love your videos.❤❤❤❤
This is just fascinating. I love how you're able to pull amazing landscapes from smooshing colors on paper. Gorgeous.
This is so pretty and so creative. I really enjoyed watching it come to life. Thank you for sharing your talent.
Hi Steve wonderful painting and learned so much from you and thank you so much for sharing your videos with us and have a great weekend..
What a wonderful and inspirational painting! Thank you for sharing your abundant talent with us.
i love that primary combination
Absolutely amazing !!!!! 😍 😍
Steve, fantastic job! The effect of adding the tree trunks was magical. Everything just came alive. I also think the color scheme was very pleasing. This is one of those paintings where you wish you could enter the scene and start exploring. Definitely makes me think of fall; my favorite season.
DANG I love your spontaneous paintings ... just about every time I watch one of the videos I wonder "what the heck is he going to do with THAT!?" And then you add a couple tree trunks and VOILA! Another masterpiece! Thanks so much Steve!
You are so blessed!!! Thank you so much for sharing your time & creativity!!! Love this scripture!
Loved this entire project. Will watch again and again. Thanks for the watercolor board review as well.
I loved the spontaneous approach.I am so inspired to get to the paper. With the weather outside being rainy and misty, I think I am going to try out some colour combinations of my own. I don't have the exact paints but I can definitely come up with something that feels neutral and monsoon like.
I love those gray greens too. The violet plays well with those. Your painting looks like it's a rained (or it is about to rain) and there is a foggy mist moving in from the left. I wasn't sure what you could do with it at first and I am pleasantly surprised at how many tree trunks you painted in. It is a beautiful scene. So maybe, one day, you could show us how to make a rainy day landscape - how to show it's raining??? I wish that I could support your channel but I cannot.
thank you so much Steve for this demonstration...truly inspiring...what a wonderful lesson...thank you!
I love this! You make it look so easy!
I love the tree trunks too.I immediately saw the forest.
I really enjoy these and that colour palette makes me drool. I could watch you do this all day long. Thank you.
Absolutely beautiful! This painting really blessed me today. Thank you for sharing your creative gifts with us.
So beautiful! I love how the light shines through from the upper right
Love this Steve! Agree with you ❤️ the neutral misty greens ...... Very beautiful painting 😋
I'm going to try this board one day as I've learned on inexpensive poster boards starting out and enjoy how solid and sturdy they are. These colors are pleasing to the eye, I like the look you got from this, very nice.
Beautiful job sir. I like drawing so your spontaneous paintings are very very interesting to try.
Thanks a lot. DOn Sylvester Houston, Texas
I LOVE this and your choice of color. You truly are the next Bob Ross. I wish you all the success!
These spontaneous paintings you do always utterly amaze me!
Wow, thanks for sharing!
Loved it...
wow!.....doesn't take u long to bring it to life.........i have to do this too..
Wonderful! This really turned out great!
Always amazed at what you can do with a paint brush and color.
Hi Steve...I'm Lorena an italian girl...I love your job 😍🤗👩🎨👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Another truly awesome painting demonstration, Steve. Thank you so much. So inspiring.
