  • I'm trying out a 100% cotton watercolor board from Crescent by doing this spontaneous landscape in a 3 color + neutral tint limited palette color scheme. Plus, I'm using the new Waffle Flower swatch stamps to create a color story card for recording color schemes that I like and might want to use again.

Months later and this is still my favorite painting you’ve done. The color story is just gorgeous. The layout looks much better than most of the paintings I plan out. It’s just perfect I think. I love it so much.

Outstanding, Steve! I could watch an entire channel of just these. You pack so much information and advice into them. It’s a rare mind that can be free enough to paint in abstract spontaneity, while at the same time giving detailed analysis. Watching the foreground, middle and background appear all of a sudden from random blobs is magical! Thanks, more please.

Thank you so much for this video. Just returning from a week long workshop on loose uncontrolled?? Watercolour... I struggled with this concept... instructor said that tight painting was ‘old’ and too controlled, and very outdated 😢 I came home that evening and immediately looked for you on RUclips - and watched your video on “to paint loose or tight” - oh my my, that made me feel so much better about how I paint personally. You were the light in my dark day more than I could ever express!! As a ‘tight’ painter, I really wanted to try and loosen up some. I absolutely love this video, because it is very loose and spontaneous but still really beautiful. I will be trying this today. Thank you so much Steve. You are such an inspiration for me. HUGS

As you were putting in your washes and your water spray , letting it run and mingle , I got worried (for myself) I didn't see anything, but as soon as you put in your "sticks" it all became clear.....I have a LOT of practicing to do......devoted to do this type of painting when I start painting again......Thank you so much again!

There is a little bit of white paper showing through on the right between the distant treeline and land ---from here it looks like housing and with a couple of horizontal lines could add roof lines; just
how it looks from sitting in my chair. I've seen this before but checking it out again. Seeing something new each time. Cool! Really great spontaneous painting Steve.

Years ago I used this board for all my watercolors. Until they started having trouble with bubbling of the attached paper to the backing and then also spotting of paper due to sizing issues. Glad to see they are manufacturing it with no apparent defects again. I really used to love it's non warping and the smoother cold press surface. I may have to try it again. Thanks for sharing Steve and once again, I really love the limited palette and great color combos you create!

I love those gray greens too. The violet plays well with those. Your painting looks like it's a rained (or it is about to rain) and there is a foggy mist moving in from the left. I wasn't sure what you could do with it at first and I am pleasantly surprised at how many tree trunks you painted in. It is a beautiful scene. So maybe, one day, you could show us how to make a rainy day landscape - how to show it's raining??? I wish that I could support your channel but I cannot.
