For me an enthusiast watch is one that if I see it on someone's wrist, I know they're another watch nerd. None of these fall into that category. This list could be titled "the ten most obvious watches to buy if you have lots of money and don't want a rolex." (Still love all the watches though)
Non watch enthusiasts aren’t wearing Speedies, Grand Seikos, Reversos, ALS, or Blancpains. I doubt that most non watch enthusiasts are even familiar with some of these watches/brands.
@@shreyasr1989 How so? I said I think they're all great watches (mostly ones out of my price range, so it's certainly not that I'm looking down my nose at them or something), I just said I don't think it meets the criteria laid out in the video. In case you think it's about money or difficulty in finding one (and nothing about what I said implies this), I think a seiko alpinist, which you can buy right now a zillion places online for under $800 is a better example of an enthusiast watch. If you see someone wearing one you can be 99% sure the person is a watch nerd, whereas with a speedmaster, grand Seiko, and a lot of the watches in this video there's a way higher chance someone wearing one wanted to get one nice watch so they went to the store with a couple grand and was recommended to buy the piece by the store employees (and there's nothing wrong with that either by the way, I just wouldn't call someone like that an enthusiast)
About the hesalite crystal on the speedmaster: there was almost no watch in the 60s that had sapphire crystals. So Omega did not choose hesalite for NASA as it was their standard crystal, but have kept it though for it is less prone to shattering and for historical reasons.
I have some of the watches of your list: An Omega Speedmaster, a Tissot PRX, a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms (only the affordable one, the Blancpain x Swatch Scuba Fifty Fathoms), and I intend to buy a Tudor Black Bay 58 this year. My dream watch is the AP Royal Oak.
I had the same experience with AP. They let me in into the boutique, but felt so unwelcome and was very much told that nothing was for sale but I could make an appointment to ask them questions or have the privilege of talking to a sales person!
I can’t believe you put the most iconic omega out there 9th! Crazy! It’s more iconic than the Sub or Daytona. Way more history. Also, where is Zenith?! The chronic master sport is truly a horological masterpiece! Not to mention the el Primero 69.
Great video! The only one I disagree with is the Tudor. I find their watch designs so dull and they all look near identical. I wonder if people would actually buy them if they were not made by Rolex.
another great vid! However i think the reason hesalite was used in the speedy was that for sure sapphire will shatter - but i dont think they were worried about "piercing the suit" as inside the capsule they dont wear space suits, but one piece under suits.... the issue was shattered glass floating around in the area they lived and worked and could breathe in. Also, Blancpain.... a watch doesn't tell you how much breathing gas a diver has (very unlikely to be "oxygen" as O2 becomes toxic at higher partial pressures....more likely to be "air" which is 21% oxygen!) - the amount of breathing gas is measured by a Submersible Pressure Gauge (SPG) - the US use PSI we Europe we use Bar....
My small list of watches for actual enthusiasts would consist of Breitling - Premier Datura or the Patek Phillipe 5780 (might have gotten ref number wrong) Longines Heritage collection Moonphase Blancpain fifty fathoms Christopher ward C1 Moonphase or moonglow Seiko SKX or a presage cocktail time Rolex Celini or Explorer 2
I have owned at least 5 watches from the brands in the list, including a Speedmaster and a Tudor BB. However, I still prefer my Seadweller over all those watches, even if that makes me a non watch enthusiast 😄.
I hate integrated straps, I got Seastar 1000 Powermatic for 420 Pounds instead [which is cheaper than MSRP of PRX in here] and Casio, I have 2 Pro Trek titanium now
Imagine having a “he say she say” (Fifty Fathoms) watch on the list and then further excluding the Cartier Santos which is the first wristwatch made for men, first sports watch and first pilots watch all in one 🙄🙄🙄
An interesting top ten Harrison (as always). I have a few that are on this list, a BB58, an old Speedy, the F-91W, a PRX and a old Reverso Duoface. I'm sure that if I switched my brain on I could think of others for my own list but you had a pretty decent lot here. Thanks for sharing.
I think that was a solid list. Some watches that I would like to see on it would be Cartier Santos (made in 1904 for a pilot) and imo can sit beside the nautilus and royal oak and not look out of place. Breitlings history with chronographs bringing in the 2 button pushers, Zodiac seawolf is also argued as the first dive watch (kinda gray area). Zenith el primero, Casio 5200c the hero.
I've always wanted a luxury watch but couldn't justify the price. That's why I turned to gussl, and I'm so glad I did. Their replica watches look and feel just like the real thing, but at a fraction of the cost.
I think you missed something, the El Primero, arguable the first automatic. I have had it for years, and at 38mm it is just perfect and a beauty on my wrist all over again.
I wish the casio w86 would get the credit for being far better than the f91. Better size more water resistant and a brilliant back light, for only a few more pounds.
the prx was the best looking of all ten, my collection - prx automatic light blue dial, seiko speedtimer, breitling avenger night mission yellow dial and the Tudor black bay bronze leather strap. of course a battered g shock.
Some good choices here. On AP, I visited the AP boutique when in Vegas in December. Oh my. No appointment, so they really didn’t want to let me in. But they did, eventually, let me past the locked door. Nothing for sale in the boutique. I was told I have to build a relationship with the salesperson first. Seriously? I didn’t plan to buy anything from them that day, but squat for sale. Seriously?. And in a tourist town. Again, seriously? Bunch of snots. Came home and bought a zenith defy skeleton here. Will I ever buy an AP? Boy-oh-boy, I doubt it.
Brother, I love your vids, but this particular one is completely titled wrong. These are all heavily hyped watches in various price brackets that anyone with even a little interest in watches would be aware of. Perhaps your definition of “enthusiast” is different than mine, but I would consider an enthusiast to be one who recognizes value in a less well known, un-hyped piece. If I see a GS SBGA293 or a rare Longines or even a lesser loved Rolex with a custom strap on someone’s wrist, I know they are into watches and not just the hype. Again, love your vids, this one just seems a bit out of whack.
Like the Springdrive but the piece of the pie annoys me no end. I was in CH today and was told that I was way out because I owned a Nomos ( despite the fact that the were in the window ). I replied that I had two, so a weirdo .
OMG! I couldn’t agree with you more!!! I love watches and I have 7/10 on your list!! I don’t have AP , VC 222 , A lange & sohne! But hoping to get them someday!!! Amazing!!
Still a copy of the 50 fathoms though, and it's only iconic because the marketing department has spent 70 years telling us so. As he said, true enthusiasts look past the marketing.
I don’t get the Casio. Also not a fan of the royal oak. There’s a richness of great options out there that aren’t cliche choices like make of these are.
A royal oak is NOT a watch enthusiast's watch. Its a watch celebrities get to show off. Not saying enthusiasts dont own them, but its the same as owning a Rolex sub.
10 I don't like the snowflake hand on the BB 9 I don't like most chronographs 8 really don't see the hype 7 I agree 6 not into most of his designs 5 great watch 4 I have a Gshock stop telling me to buy this 3 it's OK but not for that price 2/1 can't disagree.
Hesalite is preferred because of the absolutely gorgeous side profile it takes on as well as it being the original. I can't understand why Omega at its price range uses a square shaped sapphire crystal on their speedys, it is really ugly and despite corrections still gives such a milky ring.
This list doesn’t fit the title. Kind of disappointing list because so many people who are not watch enthusiasts heard of Black Bay 58 and Omega Speedmaster. Should have other brands in there like Seiko, Hamilton etc
I don’t agree because Rolex is a big target for flippers that it’s excluded from the watch enthusiast list. Rolex has a solid history and make some solid tool watches.
Sorry but most of these are just hype watches or very popular watches based on extraneous variables creating an external influence in the watch market. Rappers made AP mainstream to non watch people.
Ummm, Chris, NO mention of the Cartier Tank and.or Santos - really? Just the horological history alone for either piece warrants being mentioned on your list. Just saaayin. Great vid still I guess. L
Not a very thoughtful representative list tbh. This is just a list of commonly popular non Rolex pieces. I mean why is Tissot PRX in there! And you boldly claim Grand Seiko are king of the dials?? Absolutely not! And please can you take a few moments to learn how to pronounce A. Lange & Söhne correctly.
You’ve just listed the most popular watches outside Rolex in the world. More than half are regularly on the wrists of casual luxury watch wearers - hardly enthusiasts.
Disappointed No skx No speedtimers No other seiko legend divers No submariner 😮 No seamaster 😮 The list goes on and on and on and on 7000 series quartz chronographs
Let see I have a 1958 Omega Constellation, a JLC Geophysic in gold, a GS Skyflake, and a Patek 5055, oh yeah and a Rolex Explorer II I bought while living in Tokyo 30 years ago. I guess that horological faux pas disqualifies me from considering myself an enthusiast. How will my children ever respect me again?
@@davidr2802 haha we're all allowed a faux pas in our lives. My point is simple, so many truly believe you cannot have a list or collection unless Rolex is included. Between what you have and what's mentioned in this video proves there is so much more to the watch market than just Rolex. I recommend keeping a broad scope and recognize heavy marketing for what it is 👍
Do you guys think I missed any? 🤔
perhaps a seiko SKX or one of the turtle variations.
How about using those same brands but not selecting the usual suspects. Separate yourself from the popular watch RUclipsrs.
Great list, Harrison! But I would add a Breguet.
Think your omega seamaster should be on the list 😂
Trade the PRX for the twelve perhaps

Agreed

Yes, the Reverso is absolutely iconic. The Cartier Basculante is also an amazing reversible watch.
Sold the PRX powermatic and bought the PRX Chrono. Have received way more compliments on the chrono vs. the Powermatic already
Great video but you should have included a Breitling Navitimer

I think the Zeitwerk is the coolest watch ever!
Vacheron Constantin is my grail ❤…. but Zenith, Longines, or IWC should have made the list.

Next year the Maen Manhattan 39 ultra thin…it’s the Nautilus version of the PRX. I ordered mine less than 5 minutes after pre order started.
I like the VC 222, but for enthusiasts, I would have thought you would have picked the 1921

I’d definitely put in Rolex Milgauss with green sapphire.
I like the video, but how about the Philip Patek, Cartier, and Zenith??
The premise of that video was all over the place. A true enthusiast appears hard to box-in. Maybe that was your subtle point.
This is Adrian Barker in a parallel universe where he doesn’t simp for Rolex. Well done, Adrian.
The Rolex Submariner came out before the Fifty Fathoms and is more iconic. It is the quintessential dive watch and is a true enthusiast watch.
Still a copy of the 50 fathoms though, and it's only iconic because the marketing department has spent 70 years telling us so. As he said, true enthusiasts look past the marketing.
If I want an Icon I'll become an Eastern Orthodox Christian.
I agree with the Tudor, the speedy and the snowflake
Anything that ruffles the feathers of a so called "purist" makes me want it more.
Wearing that exact PRX right now
It’s epic!
THe PRX has cheap plastic parts in the Powermatic 80, in my opinion it is over rated.
How do you rate the Christopher Ward 12 against the PRX ?
Beats down the PRX in any way. Just superior and a great value.
Omega Seamaster?
Remarkble similar cadence to Adrian barker
Damn casually flexing the 222 .
Zenith El Primero might be added may be. As an opinion.

So Edgy.
The g seiko is probably a great watch, it just looks boring for me..
I'm getting poor man's Adrian Barker vibes.
I just dont get the A.P thing, very bland qnd uninspiring in my opinion. The only one ive ever liked is the black skeleton

I was referring to the spring drive movement used not just the snowflake.
Jlc 👍
"Watches for True Enthusiasts" *proceeds to list a bunch of hype models.* I guess it could be worse, at least there is no Rolex here.
4:07 is the SBGA413 Shunbun, it's not the Snowflake 😢

It’s not actually the snowflake model shown.
