How I got published: 15 tips on how to get your comics out there

- First video about making comics that I've done. Planing on making more of these instructional / tips videos for all you aspiring comic / manga artists out there! Please help me spread and link these videos so that other artists in need of the information can get it.
Short about me: I'm a comic artist and a teacher at Serieskolan (the Comic Art School) in Malmö, Sweden. There I teach both about the comic making process and about the industry, things like how to get jobs and make a portfolio. Website for the school:

Disclaimer: English is not my native language, plus I was super nervous making this, so bare with all the mistakes I do, haha...

Very good video! As an artists myself, I've been thinking a lot about publishing stuff, not comics nor mangas really, more projects like artbooks and children's books, and your tips are very usefull nonetheless! Thanks a lot for sharing them =)
(Also, something that I've thought before since I started to follow your work: are you of Brazilian or maybe Portuguese descent? You have a very common name and surname we see around here in Brazil!)

Yes, I am! My father is from Portugal, but I'm born in Sweden and never learned the language (my mother is from Poland and they spoke Swedish at home).

Great vid, these are valuable lessons. Getting a contract with a publisher is great because it allows you to concentrate on drawing while experienced editors take care of the marketing and certain design aspects.
But personally, I hope and think that more people will start to self-publish on the internet in the future, by educating themselves and getting a feel for how their audience thinks. Ideally, getting published shouldn't be thought of as the goal, but rather creating manga that people will love -- which in my experience is often confused.
Hope you'll keep making videos such as these. Here's an idea for another one: How to find time to draw your manga while having a full-time job. I could really use that one XD
+Alexander Reiswich Absolutely, you're right on the money with that! I can try to make a video about how to motivate yourself and what are good and not so good motivational thoughts when you want to make comics (i.e. earning money vs. making good manga/comics, sometimes it clashes and sometimes it doesn't).
Yes, I'll do a video about how to plan your manga making and still have a job. I work 50-80% right now with teaching, so even though it's not full time, it's still a juggling game, time-wise.

I'm still trying to graduate and get into college. But every publisher has double standards and loops. I know what genre I'll write. (Action horror/ urban fantasy) I don't see how people say 'comics are booming.' when so many are going under.
I’m a pretty good manga artist. My backgrounds are a little lacking though. I focus more on action and story. I have finished an entire comic, but it never ended up getting published. I have an entire story and I’m working on actually drawing it all finally, after lots and lots of designs... I’ve looked into a lot of Webcomic posting places, but I’ve learned almost everywhere blocks violence, in which my art contains a lot of blood and death, not brutal necessarily, but, enough I’m skeptical to post to such places, which all happen to be the most common and easy to post to.

I draw and I write my own stories for my cartoons, I was so wanting to one day put them into newspapers but the unthinkable happened and the internet has destroyed newspapers. I was so sad and confused, what was I going to do now ? but I never gave up, now I want to do a comic book and now I need to find a publisher. But how ? where ?
There’s Image Comics and Dark Horse comics that I would recommend but personally I am going with Image comics

Okay here is my question, I’ve almost finished my comic which is basically my baby and I hide it from everyone, you’re sayin put it online but what’s stopping people or companies from stealing it and getting it copyrighted them selfs ? Yes I’m very confident in my book

Do you have to get you comics translated before you send them over to another country? like, translate them to the native language? And how do you find publishers. iv'e tried online searches but only marvel and dc come up. And the other links seem to be dead ended. I've also tried looking for news papers too, but I don't really know where to look to find this information.

Natala can I publish a comic to a manga company even if it has a lot of manga element, but lot of cartoon drawing like-anime?
It all depends on what company you send it to. Do research in your country and Internationally and look for publishers who print comics that looks like yours! Or if you are inspired by a comic, look at what publishers has released that comic. Good luck!
