Simple explanation to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's Ending

  • To reiterate before some people get mad, this is just one explanation that exists among the hundreds of theories floating around. It's all in good fun. Theorizing is all we got until the next 4-5 years lmao
TLDR: Sephiroth plans to utilize the Reunion which is a merger of worlds. He is merging every timeline in existence to the remake timeline so that there will only be one single timeline in the ff7 universe. This is so that it doesn't matter if he lost in the OG or in other timelines, because this is the only one that will matter so winning in remake will mean an absolute victory. And a loss will be an absolute loss.
To guaranteed his win, he needs to cast meteour and he needs cloud to deliver him the black materia to him at the northern crater which is why he is manipulating cloud so hard. He needs to get rid of holy and we see he has been doing that throughout the entire game, but got outplayed as aerith managed to sneak one into the remake's timeline. He acknowledges this when he sees cloud with the white materia in the remake timeline, "that doesn't belong here." Now that his plan to stop holy is ruined, he has to figure out how to deal with it.
The rainbow light signifies some time shenanigans happening. Zack's purpose is to show this plot device. Cloud collided swords with sephiroth when he tries to kill Aerith and rainbow light came out. Tifa saw a version of aerith with blood and one without, so there most likely is an Aerith that 'lived' in some other timeline. Why is this important? Because when reunion happens, if all timeline is merging into one then that alive aerith will then make her way back into remake's timeline, just like Zack. How they going to explain multiple instances of characters post merge? Maybe they're all just dead in the other timelines is my guess since we see Zack fated to get gunned down by Shinra no matter which route he chooses except the one where sephiroth put him in the lifestream.
Or maybe some crackpot insane styled plot twist is coming our way, who knows. This is just the way I interpreted the ending when I finished the game. Either way it goes, most of the game has been pretty damn similiar to the OG.

This, and also I think the multiverse stuff is a way to flesh out what the lifestream is and is capable of. It expands on the power of memories and feelings, which is what the lifestream has always been since the original. A key figure goes one way, dies, returns to lifestream, the lifestream uses this new information to go a different path. I think you can see that with basically Zack's whole arc. They explained this in some more cryptic manner in the original with Sephiroth traveling through the lifestream, and the "multiverse" stuff is how they're showing that power in the Remake.

The events are repeating themselves for some reason, thinking back of Sephiroth saying that he will never be a memory in AC, I suspect this has to do with him again. Aerith was probably aware of what was going on and also rolled back her journey, this time with all the informations she needed from the previous events. How she could do that? Well time and space don't matter in the lifestream.

Maybe the only way to defeat Sephiroth this time would be for Cloud to sacrifice himself so that Sephiroth dies permanently with him. I think Sepiroth found a way to weaponize emotion via lifestream's multiverse. The prime emotion he wants is loss or grief. That's why he's basically started the war between Shinra and Wutai. War happens, meteor happens, multiverse colliding. All that negative emotions will siphon to him achieving godhood. And since the timeline is merged, we got all our heroes to stop him. But I'm guessing they need to return to their respective timeline when it's all over and Aerith as we know will still be dead in the remake timeline.

I have seen theories where people elevate Aerith up to god levels, and I don't think she is that at all. She's doing her best, but it's more of a scrappy job than some masterful plan. I think a lot of her "big plays" are better credited to the lifestream than Aerith, though I think there are memories of other Aeriths feeding the lifestream information. So in a way there's some type of mastermind going on, but I don't think Aerith has all or even most of the information at any time, she's still responding to bits and pieces she gets here and there.

And we don't know just how much control she has over things. It feels like she may have got Zack to the right timeline, but we don't know how much of that is Aerith and how much is lifestream itself. But other than that, we've seen Seph show more ability to manipulate worlds than Aerith. So I just disagree with the implication there's some "omniAerith" or "ultimate Aerith", we haven't seen her show that yet. @Manudyne 4 месяца назад +1

My theory after finishing the game and watching this is that Sephiroth needs Cloud not only to get him the black materia but also to act differently in some crucial events. To me it looked like it was Cloud to kill Aerith and Sephiroth needed to have Cloud do it because when he did it himself in the other timelines it didn't work and he got defeated every time.
He wants a new timeline where Cloud does everything he says and becomes an "evil Cloud" who can grant Sephy the victory in the end by slowly turning against the others. That's why Cloud seems off in the ending cutscene and he puts the black materia into his sword. Also Barrett seems very suspicious of Cloud and says a very little convincing "Ok we trust you" when Cloud says he knows where Sephy is.
Aerith knows this and told the others that she was gonna die this way but it was necessary to create the new timeline in which Cloud acts like "a puppet" (Sephy says it before the fight in the temple) who does Sephy's bidding while Aerith and the lifestream are going to try to undermine this attempt from Sephy by tapping in the other timelines to influence other events and getting informations, working under Sephy's radar and basically making it look like he's winning again (which he is from the looks of it). And maybe in the final game the rest of the gang with the help of Aerith from the lifestream are going to fight Cloud to stop him and create their own new timeline in which this last Sephy attempt failed forever.
It's difficult to explain and I did a bad job probably and I could be totally wrong but I like a theory of an "evil Cloud" who becomes a new villain but correct me if I'm missing something!

@@juanfernandorojas3194 I think the point was that both us and Sephiroth needed to overpower the arbiters to change both parties fates.
We want them defeated so we can change the story and save Aerith meanwhile Sephy wants to use them as a tool to stop us and seal his new destiny, where he can finally win.
Basically the arbiters are neutral, but now half of them are white (the ones that have been brought to our side) and half is black (the ones Sephy is controlling) and whoever has more willpower and strenght of spirit will win in the end (us of course and maybe Zack will also come back!)

I love this theory, because it kinda mean the one I have about the remake Sephiroth.
The remake sephiroth is advent children who was able to more or less break away from the will of Jenova (that part is convoluted).
It would explain why the whispers got involved, why Zack was pulled into an alt timeline and how sephiroth has been able to influence cloud so much (without Zack in the livestream guiding cloud sephiroth has a stronger influence on him).
It would also explain why Aerith dies even after we save her. I think sephiroth wanted her alive. It would mean Aerith wouldn’t be in the livestream to amplify holy like she did before, Aerith herself kind of altered the timeline and made sure she would die. It would explain why the whispers were holding cloud back even when he was trying to save Aerith.

It's funny because sephiroth himself said the rules: 1) when fate is breached a new world is created and 2) no matter how persistent, that created world will get destroyed.
It means that it's his fate to get defeated and defying it will just create another timeline which will eventually get destroyed. There's no telling that the merging of worlds in rebirth is final, because sephiroth himself was able to separate zack from the merging. It means timelines can still be created when fates are defied, so sephiroth trying to defy his defeat will just do the same.
I would also like to emphasize one possible plot hole in what you said: if alive aerith and zack will fully merge with remake timeline and become permanently alive, it means it's not necessary to place the non-empty holy in the remake timeline because the non-empty holy will just blend with the remake timeline anyway.
From my understanding, even if merged, the timeline where aerith lived will still vanish in due time. I'm guessing she persisted until the end of advent children.

another interesting thing we can look forward to is how and when the reunion will happen. in the og the jenova reunion happens when Cloud reaches Sephiroth in the north crater. I wonder if, when and how the reunion of timelines will happen in part 3...

This is my thinking as well, we see Cloud stop Sephiroth and save Aerith in 1 of the time lines, We see Zack in the church at the end in another. Cloud (having traveled through the Multiverse can still see and interact with Aerith and Zack and fight Sephiroth. So when the world merge into one I see both Characters potentially being resurrected.
They need to Save the planet and forge a better ending than the 1 we saw in the OG FF7 where mankind was wiped out.

I think you're mostly right, only Sephiroth actually had his reunion happening, winch is having Aerith dead on all these new universes created by the end of Remake. He wanted to do that, but Cloud saves her and creates the single universe where she does survive.
Then there's that glitch and Sephiroth really did kill her and to me, that's Aerith "editing" the timeline, because before the sneaky blur effect is removed from Sephiroth and he's smiling for killing her, he's surprised AF, hidden by said blur.
Aerith probably saved Zack into that last other timeline.

I really don’t get why Sephiroth would want to kill Aerith tho. Cuz by doing that she joins the lifestream and gains the ability to stop meteor. Sephiroth just wanted Cloud to experience the feeling of extreme sadness and emotions to feed the planet. It doesn’t mean that his intention was to kill her. If you think about it why would Sephiroth repeat the same mistake he did in the OG that sealed his fate and his plans. I think that Glitch was to show that Cloud was experiencing two worlds at the same time.

He says "I can meet her if I go to the promised land" reunion has been changed to mean a reunion of all the timelines, promised land could mean the timeline Zack and her are alive, because 2 years later in advent children, they are together, telling cloud he can't join them yet. 498 years after that, we see red in a world where humans don't exist? So what if they went to the prime timeline and Red stays behind for the Gi?

Well, the why is important here.
Why is and does Sephiroth want to merge the timelines? To win in the one all merged. I would argue, this.
    The Ancients-
Ancients could not beat Jenova. In their efforts they sealed Jenova in multiple hundreds of timelines and had the planets arbiters of fate watch over each, to make sure events of the scattered timelines all play out similarly or the same.
Broken mirror theory. I would argue though just as Jenova is scattered across all timelines and reality, so is cloud. It think when they all merge, cloud is gonna realise that Jenova feared Cloud. That he was not a puppet but something much much more.
Aerith pulled a Makaveli (aka 2pac) Sings about it in her music ( one song)

Because, apparently, cloud and aerith can exist in all possibilities, while cloud doesn't know this yet. Aerith seems to have figured it out. But why did square add this rather than just making it one timeline that you must beat Sephiroth? I don't know, so you can see zack and play as aerith after death is the only reason I can think of... and to keep us guessing for a new experience. See, this is why I don't understand why they're using multiverse and time travel when things end up almost the same. Sephiroth cast Meteor in the original and Holy did not stop Meteor in the OG. Aerith in the lifestream stopped Meteor. All Sephiroth had to do was not kill Aerith and he would've won, but instead, what he does is try to kill her so Cloud could save her. In otwtas it was mentioned both by Aerith and Sephiroth that it will take time but their conciousness will still merge with lifestream which scares them a little.

      @Kanriel 5 месяцев назад +1

@@KajuKajuKatli There is still multiple worlds to some degree, to what extent we may need part 3 to figure out. But I think there's a limit to how many worlds the lifestream can hold together at once, as the lifestream pulls out of failed worlds (which is why they fail). We're told this when Zack goes to stop Biggs, the lifestream has already left that world, and it is doomed to fail shortly because there is no more lifestream. Without the lifestream, the world dies quick.
They'll probably expand on this later, but I view the Arbiters of fate as representations of the lifestreams power, and Sephiroth is siphoning that power for his own gain. This may hinder the ability for extra worlds to even exist, which is obviously part of Seph's plan. Not sure if Sephiroth is even interested in killing Aerith. Him killing Aerith will result in his demise because she stops Meteor which ruins his plans. Why would Sephiroth repeat the same mistake by killing Aerith? And there are so many hints that point to Aerith being alive. Cloud was the only one allowed to enter the portal to the capital and manages to parry Sephiroth’s blade and save Aerith. The name of the game is Rebirth which is referred to what Cloud did. The birth of a world in which Aerith survives. Its only natural that the others think he is crazy because they did not enter through the same portal as him. So the next game will probably be called FF7 Reunite/Reunited because the world’s will be merged again as hinted by Zack. Other hints that point to Aerith being alive is when Zack says “Save her!” To Aerith thanking Cloud during the final battle and Sephiroth saying that he underestimated her. They are not going to add all the convoluted stuff just for it to all end up like how things ended in the OG. The devs are going to give us the happy ending that fans have wanted since the OG.

Fact of the matter is, if he was right I would buy part 3 but he isn't. Rebirth sales can already tell how much worse part 3 will be.

Doesn't have to be simple, cloud has become crazy, he starts seeing things and delusion things. This is what happens if people are swimming too much mako pool, like people are swimming to nuclear pool and drugs

Holy did not stop the meteor in the OG. The lifestream supposedly guided by spirit Aerith did. Which means in order for this to happen, Aerith still needs to be ultimately dead and part of the lifestream in order to have this ability.
And the multiverse still matters even if it turns out to be the same in the end, because they still took the weight from Aerith's death scene and robbed us of the lake scene with Cloud.
