Best catfish cleaning video I’ve ever seen. No waste whatsoever
Wow, thanks!
You are correct sir, flatheads are best eating. Though they have many names depending on where you’re at… Flathead, yellow cat, Opelousas all the same fish. They are not as plentiful as blues and channels in Texas. You do have to trim catfish fillets and take all the “bloodline” off or it will taste funky. If trimmed and cooked right I’ll put catfish up against any fish. 👍
Absolutely! You got it!
Cut the gills, and put them upside down in a bucket to bleed them, and then it's not to bad.
Cutting the mud viens not even necessary. Just marinate the meat in Italian dressing or buttermilk .
@@reformedgringle bunch of the bigger flatheads have a half to an inch of red across the entire fillet. I’ll pass on the soaking, way easier to trim them. To each their own though.
The catfish meat is bloody because you don't bleed it. You also incorrectly process them
I've learned so much from watching your video's. I cleaned my first turtle from watching you and doing what you said to do. Much thanks to you and people like you that intends to keep the old ways alive. Respect.
Thank you so much! It’s so great to know the videos are making a difference!!!
*Really a Great Video Micha... I do so enjoy, your insights, perspectives, & comparisons... These kind of Vids take me back my younger days and rekindle a senses of appreciation for how folks did things, and still pass on the tried and true with a bit of the new... of the Natural World... Grandma use to say, "My Daddy's favorite saying whenever he was teaching us kids was, 'Keep open your Spirit to gather, hold and share what you can of how to take care of yours and others too...' "* As always much appreciation to you and yours and to your viewers ..gw
Thanks so much! It’s a pleasure to bring you these!!!
Great instructions on cleaning these fish. I am going to put it in my playlist. Thanks.
Thanks brother!!
I never see flatheads around where I live (Florida), but we had a bunch in Missouri when I was a boy. Thank you for your excellent instructions
Glad you enjoyed it! I guess I’ve never seen a flathead in Florida either come to think of it!
Excellent education on Catfish cleaning, thank you!
My pleasure!
I wanna go fishing now.
You got some great catfish lakes in Texas!
@@McGieHomesteadAdventures yes sir you are absolutely right…
P@@McGieHomesteadAdventures
As catfish are voracious crawfish feeders, they often use their noses to flip and disturb the larger rocks they live under.A fleeing crawfish may be sucked in along with some small unwanted stone debris.I believe the natural adaption of the nose shape for shovel head and flathead cats is designed for getting under the edges of these rocks.A quick torquing/twisting motion turns the rock over.I’ve caught many of these, using crawfish, with scarring on their mouths from this activity.
That’s very true……. They have to work for a living just like everyone else!
Excellent video..Thanks for taking the time to teach others.
My pleasure!
Thanks!! Great for someone like me who typically doesn't fish for catfish, but is now going to.
Hope you enjoy! I just ate a young flathead on Tuesday and it was as good as any fish I’ve ever eaten!
Love to see how you prepare and cook the fish too.If that's possible. Thanks for all the interesting and good info.
We will make that happen!
I’ve been waiting on this catfish cheek meet video.
Haha that’s awesome!😂😂😂
Looking great mr Micah look forward to seeing the next one
Thanks bud! Gar tomorrow!😉
Yes, continue to tease me with those succulent pieces of fish...

Great video very informative! Thank you!🎣
Glad you enjoyed it!
Well done video sir! i love that you show how to use all off the catfish meat on both species. Soaking channel cats in salt water a great tip. I eat a lot of channel catfish. For me, the bigger the better. Another tip for channels would be to cut out the blood line of the channel. Makes a difference (sometimes) - depending on where and when they are caught.
Absolutely! They vary greatly!
Well done, great explaining.
Thanks buddy!
Nice job on this video. Thank you
Glad you liked it!
Yummmm! I love me some good old fried catfish with fresh sweet onions and pickled hot peppers!!! 🙂🇺🇸🐟👍
Oh yeah! Definitely delicious!!!
Thanks so much for your help.
You’re welcome! I can’t wait to hit the water soon!
again you have taught me something! I didnt know about the cheek meat!
It’s not huge, but oh so good!
I learned a lot of knew stuff ! What do you use to keep your knifes so sharp ? Thank you for teaching me something new !
I use a sharpening steel. It was a great week with the boys!
I prefer flatheads over other catfish but even big blues and channel catfish are good if cleaned properly. Good video 📹 👍
Thanks brother! Yes too many people just throw them back!
Great information. Thank you!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Very good instructions
Glad it was helpful!
What a great video thank you for you knowledge sir.
Very welcome!!
Thanks nice knowledge to filleting

Beautiful cats, I've never had a flathead, that I know of.... I have eaten tons of catfish. Love catfish.... Some good eating. The strange things found when gutting animals.
Thanks for sharing.
Stay happy, healthy, hydrated and safe.
May God continue to bless you and your family.
Yes I’ve found birds, baby turtles, rubber worms, wild cherry seeds...... the list goes on!

Flathead belly is the best. A ten pound flattie will yield a good bit of meat for frying or stew, but IMHO if you don't blacken the belly on a grill you're missing something.
That’s a fact!
Wow nice filets good eaten on them ..nice fish&fries with some malt vinegar dam now im hungry 😒i need to go fishing 🎣 reel soon great video ty for sharing
Oh yes you get out there and get em!!!👍👍👍
I've never eaten catfish before, but watching this video makes me want to try. Stay blessed!
These catfish are delicious! I’m not sure about all catfish.
You’re missing out
Phil Robertson cuts diagonal up behind the bottom back fin to bleed them before they die and the meat is pure white. He said they taste much better when done that way. Next one I get, I'm gonna try it that way. Great vieo, thanks for showing us!
Interesting! Sometimes I cut the gills ….. sounds great! We have this year’s catfish week in the books now so the videos will roll out soon!
Great video. Thanks.

Enjoyed this alot
That’s awesome! I definitely find it fascinating myself.
Good videos Mr. McGie
Glad you enjoyed it!
Had a few acres in Oklahoma had a creek going thru the back of my property in Purcell and me and the kids pulled 30lb channel cat outta there all the time. Unbelievable eating! Little flour and crisco and your good!
That is awesome! I’m amazed how good they can be!
Thank you for this video 👍🏻👍🏻🇨🇱
You’re welcome my friend!!
Never had flathead before. Matter of fact I've never caught one either. The meat looks great 🤘
Oh man you need to!!!
You need to eat you some flathead meat....Mmmmm! They are some goooood eatin'! 😁👍
Live bait or the freshest cut bait.
Can't imagine a fish eating shale rock! Maybe they would regurgitate it? Thanks for pointing out the differences between these two Critters! Best wishes Brother
I guess he scooped them up with that clam! I might have saved him a painful BM😂😂😂😂
I've caught them with 15 to 20 clams in there belly. The acids kill the clam, it opens up, digested clams are the regurgitated out. Those piles of clam shells in shallow water are were the fish get rid of them
I believe that catfish, like many 'striking' fish, tend to expand their gill covers, creating a little bit of a vacuum that helps draw prey into their mouths. If this be so, the cat may have been going for something hugging the bottom and got some loose bottom material along with the prey. What do you think?
That’s exactly what I think happened..... he just didn’t sort through it 😂😂😂
I thought this was easy as a flat head has a flat head and a channel catfish lives in the TV only on certain channels.
Edit: I think it ate the rocks because of a simple case of misidentified prey. I've caught bluegills and trout that have eaten really small twigs floating in the water or leaves
That’s very possible!!! It is pretty dark down there in deep water so I can see how that would be possible!
up here we have river muscles and when you catch a catfish from the deepest part their bellys have nothing but dozens of muscle shells in them. some of them half as big as your hand. either way its official....now you got to come down and do a blue vs bull vs channel vs flathead vs scaly cat lol
😂😂😂 that’s why I like you so much!......... your all official and everything!!😂😂😂
@@McGieHomesteadAdventures emphasis on "OFF"icial lol
Goes without saying..... but since you said it....😂😂😂
So true about the flat head it is the best fish any body can eat thin its the channel cat I like them to now for the blue cat not so much to me its almost like eating chicken meat thanks for the cleaning video nice tips hope ya'll the best in Tennessee God Bless from Louisiana.🤠
Thanks so much! Hope you’re having a great year catching some fish!
That's a sharp knife.
I love the victorinox!
My favorite eating sizes from 1 to 5 pound's
Definitely delicious!
You did a good job 👍
Thanks!
dont get me wrong, i love to eat all catfish but to me flatheads are in a league of their own, one of the best eatin fish in fresh water in my opinion
The other day I had one that was better than walleye!
What about all the fish chips you left on the fish?
The catfish have rocks in it so it can help its buoyancy it's something in nature that makes the catfish swallow the rocks like I said it is for buoyancy
Great haul of big fish, when you were pulling the biggest fish in I thought it could be a small alligator 😬 Do you get them in the river.? God bless
No alligators here..... we get too cold in the winter. And I’m glad😂😂😂
If you like chicken and turkey livers don't discard your catfish livers from that size fish and up. They are really good. You should try some. Raised around the obion river bottoms of West Tennessee and have eaten catfish and their livers all my life.
Awesome! I’m not crazy about liver but it is healthy and I am eating it right now!
great video
Glad you enjoyed it!
I catch blue cats in the mattaponi in Virginia quite a bit of red meat they grow fast
I personally like blue cat meat but we never catch them here!
Damn I had NO idea how much meat I've been wasting, ill DEFINITELY be watching more of your videos thank you sir excellent tutorial
It’s truly eye opening! Welcome to the channel!
HEY THANKS!! FIRST TIME I'VE SEEN SOMEONE EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CHANNEL, AND FLATHEADS..I'VE HEARD THE SAME!!! FLATHEADS BELLY THE BEST!!!GREAT JOB. IF YOU GUYS WOULD CUT THE GILLS ON YOUR FISH, BLEED THEM OUT!!! MUCH BETTER FILETS..I ALSO SOAD IN SALT WATER OVER NITE...MY WALLEYE, I ALSO BLEED& SOAK A- 1 FAVOR.......
You bet! Sounds awesome!!!
In my region flatheads are more abundant than channels. But the channels rarely get as big as yours. But the flatheads are probably the apex predator in most lakes. I catch them often while fishing for Bass. Sumtimes they will eat gravel or dirt if they have a stomach ache. They will carry the rocks for sumtime, the rocks help grind up the bones, feathers etc.
Do you usually keep them to eat?
Thats a sharp knife.
I really like it!
@@McGieHomesteadAdventures
What kind of knife is it?
Here’s a quick look! I love it!
amzn.to/3OECKpL
nice!, well done!
Thanks!
Do you ever fry the back bones? They are good, the backbone over the ribs is really good on a flat head.
Wow you just taught me something! It’ll happen!
Try frying the tail fins
Like eating bacon
The most common thing I found in channel catfish stomachs was small snails
That’s definitely gonna correlate with what’s available for them to forage on.
Great job flat Head is hard to beat.
Yes indeed!
Will you continue to reply to comments as you grow?
Absolutely! If at all possible! That’s the fun part!
Super vid..Here in Europe they sell sumec. They claim that it is a catfish.(South African).Any info you have on this would help. Thanks
I’d love to see one that is intact before cleaning
You know that if you hang up the fish and cut the tail and let them bleed out the meat is better tasting
Like a gizzard, rocks were helpful in digestion. Fish was probably dying
Glad I could be there for him!😆😆😆
Have you heard that when you get poked by a catfish fin you rub the tail or the belly to make it quit hurting.
I have heard that, and I am looking forward to trying it someday!
I lived on a lake in Eastern N.C. that's full of cats. We would catch lots that I thought were channels or blues except these cats had a straight tail not forked. They weren't bull heads or flat heads. They were silvery gray and we caught them from a few lbs to 15 lbs and bigger ones are there. What type cats were we catching? Thank you.
I honestly don’t know! That would be fun to investigate!!!
@@McGieHomesteadAdventures Thanks , I agree. I'm sure I have pics of the species I'm asking about. No idea how to make available to be seen. E mail possibly. Thanks
These cats in addition to not having a forked tail have a sorta rounded out , bowed tail like a Grindle. There's only so many varieties..... tnx.
I have looked for campdog and I can't find it where do u get it from
Here ya go bud! campdogcajunseasoning.com/
I don't understand why people peel catfish skin off like I've always been able to just skim it like any other fish
I say whatever works for you…. Go for it!
Flatheads=happy
💯 %!!!
That’s a lot of meat. It’s funny you have fish like that and up here we get excited over a 14 inch brook trout or a 20 inch salmon that’s got less than half the meat as those catfish.
That’s definitely different! I guess each region has its specialty! I’d love to have moose!😂
Which one is the better tasting ones?
If they are big ones…… definitely the flathead. The little one pounders, not as much difference.
I use an electric fillet knife
I put my lines out as I hear the Flathead are running
Awesome! Good luck!
Is it safe to eat catfish out of the Tennessee River, or is it too polluted? I've seen photos of catfish as big as people come out of there!
I can’t speak to that river….. there is probably an official statement put out about it however.
Good knife sharp
I love the Victorinox!
So which is the best meat in your opinion? Belly or cheek?
Oh my goodness that’s tough……. I’d have to say the cheek! And there’s not much of it!
Would you consider cutting the tails off and letting both fish bleed out...... That flat head fillet might get a lot whiter.
Why not the gills? tv.gab.com/watch?v=633709870f483b0edf3e7d00
I can’t make videos like this for RUclips
How do you kill the catfish before cleaning?
Cut their hills and they’ll bleed out. I can’t show it on RUclips but I have a great video on Gab!
tv.gab.com/watch?v=633709870f483b0edf3e7d00
Every time I’ve eaten flatheads, the meat always has a mushy texture. I prefer blues and then channel. I always throw flatheads back. Is there a way to prepare them where the texture isn’t mushy?
Oh my! I wish I lived close to you! I’d take all of them off your hands! We seem to like them more than the rest!
Do you find their texture to be mushy? I’ve cooked them all different types of ways (aside from smoking one) and have gotten the same results
Only the little ones have been mushy for me…… I smoked a 20 pounder and it was good! We haven’t had any bad flathead.
The clam shell opens up in the belly from the acids in the stomach and he passed the shell.
I wonder if that’s what happened to Me last night?🤣🤣🤣
You can keep all the big catfish in the lake and it isn’t going to affect the population.
We haven’t caught any big ones yet
Some ducks (technically is type of dinosaur, evolution-wise) swallow stones to help them break open shellfish. Dinosaur fossils are sometimes found with these "gizzard stones". It could be that these catfish swallow shellfish, and grind the stones into them to release all that shellfish goodness.
Difference between flats and others. Flathead taste the best. Like Channel, blues, they can taste good to a rank and nasty. A flathead tastes delicious to good.
Well said!
@@McGieHomesteadAdventures 😁😁😁😁
I soak my channel cat meat in water and concentrate Lemon juice overnight. Changing it at least once. It takes out oils and blood.
Oh that’s awesome!

Flatheads are definitely the top of the line 👍
Yes they are!
I always soak my catfish in milk and tobasco sauce for a couple of hours before frying

I heard that wild catfish have very strong smell due to the fat in between the skin and the meat. So by getting rid of that fat layer there will be no smell, is it true? And please advise on how to get 100% of that fat out of the fish. Thanks.
That depends on how old the fish is and where it’s caught. I honestly don’t usually have to trim anything off. I highly recommend that you go fishing and try it! Don’t depend on what people tell you. Try it yourself! People are crazy!
@@McGieHomesteadAdventures thanks!
The difference is in the name. Doesn't take a genius
😂😂😂
People say that you have to skin them first. Is this true.?
Naw…. I sometimes eat the skin and all!
Can anyone tell me if a mud cat is good eating?
Ask 10 different people and get 10 different answers! But I love them!
How much did that flathead weigh?
I honestly don’t remember….. I’m thinking around 12 lbs.
If you don't want the catfish to slide you should put salt the salt will stay in the skin and it will be easy for you to skin it I won't slide around I'll be perfect
A 5 star suggestion from the five k’s! Thanks!
