First time watching. You are an excellent instructor. I've always heard large cats weren't any good. Just goes to show how skilled you need to be. Not sure I could do it but I know a lot more than I did!!
You are a great instructor . Everything covered. Nothing wasted. Even fed the corn and mater's. I use a linoleum knife for making the cuts through the skin. The hook and large handle make the knife easy to control, and it saves the edge on the fillet and boning knives. Lotsa uses for breaking down all sorts of critters really. Try it and l think you'll like it.
Thank you sir people need to know how to do things to enjoy the fruit of their labor I am 70 yrs old I caught cat fish and skinned them but none that big you are good at what you do and a good teacher 👍
Thanks you are very good at that, I’m 59 and still learning. However I only do this about once a year, when a friend brings them in from the nets . You have helped tremendously!!!
Great video we always hung our big cats on a tree and score the skin around the head and down the back and then just yank the skin starting at the head all the way down to the tail and then start filleting it up one side at a time, I like how you quartered the fillet up, ima start doing that to them biguns from now on
My dad was a MS river commercial fisherman when I was a child. We ate a lot of fish. Dad skinned and cleaned those big heads, and Mom made chowder from them.
Nice fish ! I snip bones off so lay flat or nail to tree, but James is slick! Try this sometime on smaller ones - hold hand like this 🤟 and slide up belly and wrap fingers around pokers and squeeze, no more pokes..you're welcome .Good video Lazy Pond Fish and Hunt!
Mannnn that was an awesome job, and you're a great instructor....clear and concise. The cutting into sections (Qtrs) is great. I'll do mine that way from now on. I used to just take pictures with big cats and throw them back because I didn't know really know how to clean them except the traditional way. Great Job !!! and thank you.
here's a trick... the outer black color of the catfish is best removed with water under high pressure... I took the catfish to a friend who has a car wash, put the catfish on the floor and he bleached the catfish with water under pressure to make the catfish white as snow. ..all that outer black skin comes off in a few minutes... the catfish remains white as snow.... try it, you won't believe it... greetings from Serbia
@@lazypondfarmfishhunt believe me, I was one of them. I only use a straight edge dexter. I clean hundreds of snapper, cobes, AJ’s, grouper etc over a year, w only a dexter straight blade. Never a serrated, until using the filletzall. I can’t argue it. 60-70 large offshore fish w 2 guys in 45 minutes. That would be 3 hours usually.
Beautiful looking Catfish! Please SHARE a few recipes! Garry here from GBL-The Ole Church 5 Acre Homestead visiting from Gander Newfoundland and Labrador Canada!
Aa catfish that big was it caught out of the river? And if so does the meat taste real muddy being it’s a catfish bottom feeder. And it’s so old and big
I always bleed them first thing even when they're already dead. Even then it gets rid of alot of the excess blood and you don't get all that red coloration in your fillets. if you clean big fish right you can't tell any difference between them and smaller cats. Except for channel cats. Big channels seem to always taste like mud hahaha
They do the same thing with tuna, except it's a left-right cut down the lateral, not up-down. That was a good, clean carcass. I definitely learned something today. One thing I have to say is that I always bleed my fish, no matter what it is, and catfish is extra bloody.
When I catch cat, I just gut it, then take the skin off, then cut it into three pieces. Removing the skin is the hardest part. Make sure your knife is VERY SHARP. Use a Whetstone that is wet.
Great job. I'm up on Deep River in Moore County, not quite sure where you from. In North Carolina but I think me and you would become friends and fishing buddies. Good deal. Fantastic cleanup on that cat
You might want to get a GoPro and a chest harness so that everyone can see how you fillet the fish. It would make for a better video. I do enjoy watching your videos.
It"s nice to see someone that really knows how to clean a catfish propertly so it will taste right
Very detailed and thorough. Thanks for sharing knowledge.

Excellent & very efficient method of cleanin m. Thanks for sharin
Thank you for watching!
The long fillet knife is an uncle Henry, really good steel . You can get them very sharp I have 3 ,but I also rather use an electric knife .
Some folks prefer old school 😉
Great demo and commentary.

Thank you!
I have really enjoyed your video.
Thank you!
great job just skinned a 45lbs Blue cat prior to harvesting the meat. I believe I will try this technique next time.
Awesome tutorial.
Thank you! Cheers!
I'm a first time viewer. Very interesting.
Thanks for watching!
Outstanding
Thank you!
I might put a nail up on the table to stick it from slipping. A years worth of fish. Cool video
Well done dude, very impressive.I like that you harvested all the meat from the fish that was available.
Thank you!
@@lazypondfarmfishhunt Hey are you a fishing guide,an I think you said you are in NC.let me know when you get a chance

Fun watch guys! Yes, fish makes great fertilizer 😀
Thanks Hank!!!
Your fillet knife seemed to stay extremely sharp throughout this process.
Please make a video as to how you sharpen it.
This was an amazing video!
thank you very much for this demo I'll try to do much better on the next ones that I catch and keep
Glad to show you something new!
Those are nice! I use an electric knife to filet catfish. But I’ve never caught one that big!!
Come on down Ma! We will put you on one! ..... get ya to catch 2 or 3 that size 😉
@@lazypondfarmfishhunt I would love that!!

I've seen this method, We will have to try it one day
I learned a lot. You seem to know your stuff and you’re good at teaching it.
Fist time watching and new sub here.
Take care!
Thanks Joel! James had taught for for years, so I started to video some of his knowledge for others!
Great video. I use a Havalon razor knife or box cutter to score the skin. That way it's not dulling my filet knife.
Great idea!
Great filleting skills..Thanks ..
Thank you!
Surprising just how much belly meat there is on a big cat.👍
Yea it is!
Very good video
Thank you!
Very good carving, jod.
Thank you!
12” filetzall blade and a cordless recip. Come back w straight edge after. It’s crazy how well it works. Cuts through everything in a couple second.
Some like it old school 😀😉

good vidia👍
Thank ya ☺️
The head an belly meat is the best tasting on the fish
Isn't it though!?!?
For real?

James does keep talking about a catfish Jambalaya 🤔
Yea this how I’ll be filleting now on🔥🔥
Hell ya!

"Ok" broo😂😂 "okkk" lols you talk like Joe from family guy😅, Keep up the amazing work that was pure perfection filets 💯💯💪🏿but fish looks old
Looks like an Uncle Henry knife
Would love to eat some of that cat fish, good job.
Good stuff!!!
Hell of a breakdown
Thank you 😉
Big ones are a blast to catch but I let them go hoping to have fun another day!!!!
To each his own sir 🤷♂️ they sure are fun to catch though!
Good video, thanks for sharing! Heck, I'd just brine and smoke the heads. Saw another guy smoke whole ones, meat pulls right off, was beautiful!
Nice job never cleaned one this big..say it's a job that requires skill...
Oh yea but practice makes it easy
What county in NC did you catch such large catfish?
Right here:
ruclips.net/video/1SgdCiJBvWI/видео.html
Is this a channel cat fish or the other kind?
This is a blue catfish 🙂
its a red-kneck square 🤣
I always bleed them first thing even when they're already dead. Except for channel cats. Big channels seem to always taste like mud hahaha
Is there a particular reason you don't bleed em?
Don't see a need. Trim your meat and remove the blood line
How do I remove grenade shrapnel from my catfish?
😅

We don't usually bleed em but might have to try a few that way
I always bleed my fish also. It makes a big difference.
Great video, I’d like to add that a cat that big should be bleed out. Doing that will give you better tasting meat
We never bleed em 🤷♂️
Very good video except the camera should have been zoomed in more. Couldn’t see anything on getting the head meat.
We have 3 tutorials of cleaning catfish. Please check out the other 2 for some better angles
