  • The build process for making your own woodworking mallet out of scrap wood and some washers for extra weight.
    This German pattern is a little easier to construct than the traditional English design due to the bored hole and turned handle. Fairly quick and easy way to get started making your own tools!

    What prompted me to subscribe to your channel was when you said: “love working wood with hand tools. The actual building process itself is where I find the most enjoyment.” That's all for me.

    Do you like your Veritas inset vise? I’ve been thinking about adding one to my workbench

      Hey Graeme - It definitely does it's job. I've been using it for 4-5 years now and only have a few small gripes with it: I filed the silver handle down a bit because it was sharp enough to get caught on my shirt constantly. The metal base plate was also scratching the guides on some of my planes, so I also filed/sanded that down a little bit. All-in-all though, I use it daily and it works fine.
      That being said I actually wish I had added a true tail vise to the bench. Not because the inset vise doesn't work, just that I wish I had the added functionality of an end vise on that side.

    what kind of planes did you use they are beautiful?

      Thanks Dove! I used a few in this video - a couple of Lie Nielsen’s (block and jack plane), a Veritas smoothing plane, and a vintage Stanley jack. The new planes are great, but there’s something lovely about using an older one as well.

    Very nice mallet! I'm a beginning woodworker and I would like to make one like yours. What are the rough dimensions of the mallet head?

    • @TheWirelessWoodworker
      @TheWirelessWoodworker  3 года назад

      Thanks! The mallet head is about 5.5” x 3.5” and about 3” thick. Some may find it a little small depending on how it’s being used, but I think it’s a good size. Good luck!

    How much weight do washers add?

    • @TheWirelessWoodworker
      @TheWirelessWoodworker  3 года назад

      That’s a good question and I actually don’t have a super accurate way to measure it, but a little estimating based on the packaging weight of the washers looks like it adds 6-7oz to the weight of the head. Overall now it weighs a little more than my other 20oz mallet.

    I have done very similar with Woodprix designs.
