in the actual movie they didnt jump off the side cause when a ship sinks the water rushes under the ship causing anything around it to go under and most likely stay under for around a few minutes. thats why they didnt jump close to the ship and instead get enough air (on the top) to jump farther. :D

You know the uss missouri have a three turet 9x16 in gun and her secondary battery consisted of twenty 5 in (127 mm)/38 cal guns in twin mounts, which could fire at targets up to 12 nmi (14 mi; 22 km) away, and during world war 2 those secondary gun weapon is used for bombarding beaches, bunkers and is used for air defense weapons and as far as I remember this weapon is not designed to destroy enemy ships but to bombard beaches, bunkers and as an anti-aircraft weapon. I know American destroyers like uss Fletcher class destroyers, during the second world war all uss destroyers used 5 inch guns as their main weapon but most of the enemy ships sunk and destroyed by American destroyers used torpedoes instead of main guns because 5 inch guns have less penetration power and very less effective range and this weapon cannot be used for long range too.
