We are using dead standing pine trees cut from my 40 acre property and some spruce. The logs are arranged in a butt and pass method and then held together with spikes.
We mostly rely on the help of a chainsaw to cut the logs, a tractor to drag and a lot of labor to lift them and put them in place. The pines in this replanted forest are fat too overgrown and have been grossly mismanaged. The trees should have be cut and thinned nearly a decade ago. Removing the dead trees is a good start to rehabilitating the forest. Later, we will thin even more and get the forest ready for replanting and rejuvenating.
In this part, we will continue to erect the log cabin walls from the foundation up. I will use the butt-and-pass method which laps one row of logs over the other, while fastening the logs together with spikes. This is simpler and quicker because it does not require the tedious work of scribing each log and notching.
A butt-and-pass corner joint on a log home creates the look of a rustic, old-fashioned cabin. As the logs are laid to create the outside corners of the building, the first log on each layer extends past the corner, and the log forming the other wall butts into the first. As the timbers are laid to build up the corner, the extended logs alternate for an effect that resembles interlaced fingers.

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.

Do you watch "The Outsider"? He did his cabin the same way and it seems to be holding up, although he wire wheeled all the logs first. I think he's also in Ontario.
I won't take the shot and yeah can't make meh
Iv been a mason for 32 yrs, and this is the nicest job I ever saw anyone do who has never done it before. A real professional job. 👍
Great show great job 👏
It’s actually a very well written and comprehensive book ruclips.net/user/postUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 . I wanted to pair this with an updated book on local codes to start planning a post-retirement dream shop. I think I have just about everything I need between the two. The extra plans available for purchase towards the end are priced almost as much as full home plans, not little sheds however.
Absolutely love your videos! When your brother first announced that you were starting a RUclips channel I knew from the get-go that it was going to be great. You have the perfect personality for YouTubing.
You also have a real talent for figuring things out as you go and building very cool And useful things. Keep em coming Kevin!
Thanks so much!!
Awesomeness and you are lucky to have Don
The tarp cabin looks like a good place to grow some herbs
It’s nice that you were able to watch and observe the Outsider to learn his process for chinking. The Outsider learned it from a veteran cabin builder that used it successfully for years. Yours looks great. I also think this process was used by Shawn James, fellow Canadian cabin builder who used it on his first cabin and will probably on his newest build. All you guys are an inspiration for us down here in the lower 48. Keep growing the Homestead. Many thanks to you and the team.
The veteran you mentioned is, The Bearded Carpenter.
Check out his channel...
I truly look forward to your videos every Saturday morning. Awesome stuff!!
I know, right? It’s like Saturday mornings were years ago, waiting all week for This Old House, but lots more fun
Chinking is looking good, Kev. Each time I see a shot of the front door, I think to myself...What a beauty. How unique.
Cabin looks super your so lucky to have a bro and a friend like Don makes all your projects a little easier on you they all turn out so well made
Another great Saturday morning with Kevin and Don 👍🏻
It reminds me of my brother and I as kids….. we would go down thru the denser part of the woods of our farm and cut down smaller tree debarked them and build our little cabins and forts each year! How much fun!
I'm so glad I found this channel when the budget cabin vid popped into my rec, every upload 30ish mins of pure bliss. Great to see it's return.
Hey neighbor! The cabin is looking fabulous! I can empathize with you about concrete mixtures and the effects it has on the hands. Let's just say that I didn't have gloves, I didn't have a tool to mix it with, and then I didn't have hands for a few weeks. I still think it was worth it though. If you're short on money and stuff needs to get done then you get it done with what you have. At least now my close friends and family are buying me tools instead of girlie stuff for my birthday now so I can get stuff done faster and safer. I love the fact that you are teaching your daughter some skills. It will be valuable in her future. The pigs look great! Especially princess pickles! 😁 I hope you have a great week, stay safe, and hug those beautiful girls!
✌💚🐖💨
Will Do! Thanks for stopping by.
Don is one in a million! What a blessing he is. Great ppl are very hard to find. And your such a hard working humble man whose funny af!! I can’t wait to see the cabin 100% finished ✅ lol 😂 too much to do on the homestead.
You're right, always start somewhere nobody comes often + NEVER on eye level !! That part everybody forgets!
Can’t wait to see the final results. It’s all coming together!
Chinking looks great! I think it's awesome that your plastic wrap cabin has held up so well over the past 6 months. I'd like to see you build the bridge over your creek/stream/long narrow water thing.
Negativity never does any good for any human being alive that is fo sure! I had faith it would work the plastic wrap cabin is amazing and your family for generations will appreciate everything thing you have built for them! The log cabin is absolutely beautiful the chinking looks amazing! I seen another vloger whom used store bought stuff and it doesn’t look as good as the mixed stuff does. I am very excited to see all of the updates on the pigs and the rest of the animals and the cabin or what every you decide to do next. God bless your family
hi Kevin, WOW!!! the cabin coming together magnifcently!! GREAT JOB!!! you and Don, and Chris did a fantastic job!!! keep up, the great work, your videos are awesome to watch, I cant wait till Saturday gets here to see what your up to, your lil girl is so awesome and getting so big, I can see her out there with you on future project!!! be safe, thank you, bill
Not surprised the tarp cabin made it through the winter. Nicely sloped roof line and plastic is pretty slippery anyway so the only thing I might worry about--snow fall--would have to be massive to be a real issue I think.
The sugar shack is coming along well also.
It will be interesting to watch the possible bridge build, hope that does happen.
Thanks for sharing this with us!
The plant you asked about with the exploding seed pods is called a touch-me-not or jewelweed. Impatiens capensis if it is orange flowered, Impatiens pallida if it's yellow flowered. Thanks for the videos -- learn a lot.
Beautifull your plastic tent... really and the fur inside!!!! gorgeous!!!!
Its cool to watch you guys on this build , on a project you had never done . Great stuff .
I absolutely loved the plastic cabin build. I had no clue there were negative comments about it.
I would love to see a better version of it.
I like the ferns coming up through the floors too. Looks cool.
Looking great, can't wait for your next episode, stay safe my Northern Brother, god bless you and your family, peace.
The cabin looks great all chinked in now. The plastic cabin is more like a Green house! Cool. Loving all the projects. Peace and good fortune and good health to you and your family. Your daughter is so sweet.
You guys really work well together. Great video. Of course that some folk say you are going to fail, how else will they feel better than you. I always wish the best and successes for you. Just because someone else fails doesn’t mean you have to fail. I love that your skill set gives you a much larger area of things to try. Really love how the cabin is turning out, thanks for sharing!
It’s so satisfying when the video speed is fast and a lot gets done very quickly… 🙃 Thanks for another really great video! 🌀♥️🌀
For a first time go of it I think it came out beautifully, you and Don need to give each other a pat on the back. Cheers!
Wow! I’ve missed some episodes. Great looking build.
Kevin.. Hey look a pile of sticks! Let's make something! 😆
If you have enough of anything you can make something!
Good to see Lena. Great lil helper.
*Modern Self reliance* Bravo well done, thank-you sir for taking the time to bring us along. God Bless.
Great job on the chinking! It honestly looks amazing.
Little fun fact (since you said that the glove fits like a shoe around your hand). A glove in Dutch is called a 'handschoen', which is literally 'hand shoe'.
I love that- it’s better than a “hand sock”
Another good day of work done. Keep it up Kev and you'll have an empire in the forest in no time. Cheers 🍺
You can go over your chinking with a damp sponge and it will smooth out any roughness or cracks before the chinking dries. This will give you a nice smooth chinking.
Your grandchildren in 60 years will still appreciate your hard work.
I think his kids already do.
There is definitely nothing built on this channel that will last 60 years. LOL. or 16 even. But it's dang fun to watch!
@@torero3 With the overhangs he has, it will far exceed your predictions. But enjoy watching and you be you.
@@dandarling5990 Keeping the rain off the structure will go a long way I believe!
@@Kevin-pv4nr Damn right! You did a great job!
I continue to love your videos. Love the positivity and all the cool projects you and Don accomplish!!
Hi Kevin. maybe this summer you can make a bridge over the creek and a pallet wood path to all those maple trees. Have a great day!!!!
Kevin maybe on the next log cabin you can notch and mill the logs to see which one takes less time? The chinking makes the cabin look complete, looks great.
The tarp cabin looks a little lonely out there all by itself. Maybe build a village of various styles of tarp cabins with a corn maze all around it. I like the chinking. Very nice.
Awesome! So glad you explained the thermal brake idea!
Tarp cabin is looking good! Not to mention how nice that log cabin is looking, kind of jealous. :P
Looking good Kevin, troweling can be fun sometimes with good company.
Jewelweed. That plant is called Jewelweed, predators try to eat it and the seed pods explode for dispersal.
Jewelweed is a natural antidote for poison ivy.
@@pattypearson6476 touch me not, that was the other name I couldn't think of.
It grows in some of the parks in the beaches area around Toronto, they are a such a beautiful orchid
@@RickCatita I think it’s in the impatiens family not orchid. If you’ve ever grown the annual impatiens they have the same bursting seed pod.
Yes it is jewel weed otherwise known as touch-me-not and in the impatiens family. Depending on whether it is drier soil the flowers will be yellow. If it is wetter soil the flowers will be orange. Poison ivy often grows nearby and it is a great antidote for poison ivy. Apply the juice from the stem, kind of like aloe juice, immediately if you come in contact with poison ivy. It is a great medicinal plant and works for other skin irritations and itches too.
I love your guys' channels! (you and your brothers)
I'm glad I can stick around and see such great creativity and growth
I think an ATV bridge across the marsh would be an awesome project 👍
Cabin looks fantastic 👌
I always enjoyed chinking
Very satisfying
Corduroy Road! The chinking wasn't bad.. I didn't hate it. Quite satisfying.
@@ModernSelfReliance 👍
We strive to learn to build like you. We have learned a lot from you already...
Man I would be so interested to see you build a bridge over the creek, maybe one that can handle the tractor? That would definitely be a challenge!
You might want to use plastic tubing with a gravity flow to collect from your tapped trees. One collection point. Enjoyed watching your day-to-day.
All your projects are great love watching you guys. Don's a great worker I hope you pay him not just in syrup. The bearded woodsman is awesome pretty cool to watch
love the log house great vid nice to see the little one getting involved the projects you do are awesome untill next time be safe up there always watching
The chinking looks better than I thought it would……..looks great in fact..
For some reason the interior looks so cozy.
I've learned a lot from your videos, been watching since the forest cube. keep up the good work
Old bowling balls work great for pig toys. We used to use those to deter rooting in our barn yards
Kevin, I have a very interesting idea. Something at least that might spark something. A mosquito defense perimeter. Build something that runs across the entire property, something like an underground set of pipes that can release some smoke (maybe from the smoker). Could be really cool and push away all the flies and mosquitos when you don't want them around. It also gives you something to do with all the excess waste you want to burn.
There's always negativity!! I watch your videos they are so enjoyable and relaxing.. I have had company out of town and am catching up on your videos.
Your little girl is so pretty I love her red hair.
my Sunday is complete, coffee and modern self reliance on RUclips, can life get any better, I’m thinking that you and Don need to come to Australia and build a cabin for me 😁😁😁 or teach me how to do it 😁😁😁 anyhow, AWESOME video as always. ❤️❤️🇦🇺🇦🇺
The plastic cabin held up great. Figured it would though I did expect a few holes in the plastic Sugar shack looks great.
An idea for making a path threw the marsh would be to get in touch with your arborist friends and see if they can hook you up with the shavings from branches. Cedar would naturally be best because of the water but any wood shavings can be used to make stable paths. Just a matter of having enough wood for the length and width that you need. If you can get the wood shavings free in the amount you need the only potential cost would be things like pipes/culverts for areas with flowing water.
Dont hurt yourself making those big batches!!
Those plants are called "Jewelweed" and have an orange and red blossom if they grow in a wet area. And are called "Touch me not", and have a yellow blossom, if they grow in a dryer area. They are related to Impatiens.
Imagine a boardwalk across the marshy bits.. that’d be so sweet. Or a tree top boardwalk 🤔 😃
Jeeze, don't give him more ideas for giant projects....LOL
@@BIGBUBBADIESEL 😉
working for a brick layer we always added lime to the mix. Makes it super hard. those weeds are called jewel weed.
You’re very talented and you can do all forms of construction. Your also very creative.
Don’t let them bother you I have a camp in the upper Peninsula of Michigan there were plenty of plastic camps like that back in the day worked just fine for them
You need to raise some geese to eat all of that grass, that or a couple of goats... :D Best cabin ever! I love how nature is helping with the decorations.
Thanks for showing the haters are WRONG! Love to learn what their opinions are worth. Keep up the great videos, thank you for sharing.
I'm new here. Found your channel a few days ago. Been enjoying watching the Log Cabin build. Will go back and watch the others after. The flowers that "explode" are called Touch Me Nots here in the US.
I'll have to go touch em when they are ready to explode. Welcome aboard!
Hey, good job with the chinking, it looked like hard work but you got through it, that deserves recognition. 👍🏻👍🏻
Anyway, the plastic cabin looks good, and the fact that the ferns are thriving in there makes me once again wish for you to try this technique for a greenhouse. Extend that short Canadian growing season to properly stock your root cellar! 🔆+🏡+🚿=🥔🍠🍓🥒🧅🥕= You->😁
I like the way you do that right thurr.
have a great summer
Nice projects, and I suggest plywood with moisture layer under the metal roof to prevent mold and energy efficiency, and interconnect all buildings to a underground 12Volt DC power tube and AC wire for future upgrade.
"I already learned something. I am right handed I'm gonna start on the other side"
Words can't describe how much I laughed at that
A great masonry mix for chinking is 9 sand 3 portland and 1 masonry cement. The extra masonry cement makes it stick better and it seems to shrink less. Also a great mix for any parging or pointing jobs.
So... The exact ratio he did with a slight slight addition of "masonry cement"
@@AK_Ray It's a slight slight addition in the same way that yeast would be a slight slight addition to bread, small volume massive difference.
Could you have put insulation in between the wire? No idea how it's done myself, just a thought.
Looking great. Keep us posted!
I hope there is a bridge build in the future.
Sugar Bridge to the land of goodness
🍁🍻
Its looking good... you have a great friend Don
"I've already learned something... chinking really sucks!!!" 😂
Cabin is looking awesome. Piggies need some scraps bought from home. Maybe a few eggs. They would love it.
Cabin is spectacular
GOOD JOB, LITTLE HELPER!
Plus plus. Her kids will love this cabin.
Great work, as always! P.S. The exploding plants might be called Impatiens noli-tangere (touch-me-not balsam plant). You should come back with a video of them exploding, when that growth phase comes :)
nice job with the cabin guys thanks for the update
You all are doing a great job!!
LOL ... very impressive ... lol ... I've not seen it done that way - appears to be much easier & yes, it does look pretty good... great job!
Lol knocking the back chunks off is my saying when I need to shower after a couple days.
With all that downed wood make a road over the swamp and a bridge across the creek so you can get to all the sugar maples next spring. Your cabin looks great it’s been a lot of work but isn’t it a great feeling seeing it now?
Wow pretty cool cabin I love it
22:33 I call it jewel weed. Usually grows in damp spots near creeks. Exploding beans!
It’s like a new pair of shoes... for your hands!
🤣 Best line! You can’t cut mesh without either gloves or blood or both. Somehow I manage to nick an arm or a leg.
I think the salt is to prevent mold/mildew
The plant you’re curious about is Jewelweed. It has medicinal uses. Also great for dealing with the effects of poison ivy which usually grows near it.
Kevin, Love the videos, you should do a full tour of your property! Would be cool to see all your projects you have done to date?
I tack them on every once in awhile in my regular videos... This saturday has a little bit of a tour.
@@ModernSelfReliance Thanks for reply! Awesome can’t wait, we love the videos. I have watched them all even got my brother watching.
Jewelweed you crush the stalk and use the juice on poison ivy rash, great projects you have going.
Glad to see Don and Chris assisting with the chinking phase on the cabin. That lazy guy in the hat is absolutely zero help.
Yep gotta build a bridge big ehough for your kabota 👍 great video as always Kevin. Viewer from bengough saskatchewan.
Butter it up like a big cake 🎂 wow.... So that said, it means no ventilation? When its summer time, would you not need airconditioning? Or fan? Then when its winter, you would need a warmer or heater? I m from SINGAPORE 🇸🇬, we have just rain and or shine! No need to worry about bugs or mosquitos because rain or shine, mostly every household has a aircon set on all year round. Less to worry!!! Saw your patching of cement in between the log...pretty well done 👍💋 nice. Yeah, you are right, it is gonna be in there F O R E V E R!
You can still open a window and control where the ventilation is coming from.
