  • Stephen Port has been found guilty of murdering four young men by poisoning them with lethal doses of the date-rape drug GHB. Now, a friend of one of the victims has claimed that police could have investigated the deaths earlier, possibly saving lives in the process.

You guys need to look at it from the perspective of the police. If they do anything outside the rule book then the eventual prosecution can fall apart because of issues with evidence - its credibility, how it was obtained etc - which would ultimately affect the defendant's right to a fair trial. Also, they may have even suspected John Pape as the offender so why would they reveal their cards to him?

@KoivuTheHab So if the drug orgy story was true, you don't think 3 deaths from a party warrants investigation? Or do you think older men drugging and raping young men is OK?! Also you need to go back and watch again. If they had of investigated the drug orgy story, they would have realised the parties did not exist and that they were a cover story. It would have been easy for them to trace the person Thierry was talking to. If they had listened to John Jack Taylor would still be alive now.

They weren’t even investigating until the LGBT groups allianced with the police highlighted his concern. Someone needs to watch the video again. Not until the last body turned up dead that’s when police finally took control and had the killer in custody.

Are you kidding? After the second death, the police couldn't, or just wouldn't, make a connection? Any half-witted detective should have been able to take one look at the first two victims and based on their physical resemblance: body type, hair, and facial features, the fact the victims were relatively found in the same area, less than a mile away from each other, that should have been more than enough to establish a pattern.

It's usually not about the skill. I'm sure the detectives are much better at their job than this guy. The issue is, most police don't get the luxury of working on just one case for 6 months. They have something like this coming up every single day. Most people get away with crime, not because they make themselves hard to catch, but because the police are to busy. If crimes get unsolved, people get upset, if taxes go up to hire more police, people get upset. The police are not complete fools, at least not most of them, they are just overworked.

Stephen port was actually very smart and deceiving besides doing it in the same place and the dumb suicide note idea, only after that did murder even cross the police mind. Full support to BBC Three for giving this man his right to speak and hold the police to account. A really interesting and eye opening documentary, vital to the gaps in modern day policing that aren't quite being reached by the checklist they have currently. I can only hope that as a result of these recent findings that the police have a further inquiry into their methodology, however the public statement they issued as a result of this is appalling.

It's just a shame that the police pussy footed around and 3 more people died! What if they had been straight and sober? Quicker and more thorough investigation? Hmmm...we can only speculate but this guy did better detective work than the real detectives, and put the puzzle together quicker! So that should've told them just how obviously linked the crimes actually were! I'm sorry they died that way. Nobody deserves that, gay or straight! Sigh....what a world!

Carla .McD he met a "friend" online whom he immediately let live with him. When Gabriel said he was moving out, he openly admitted in the beginning that he didn't even ask where. This guy is no friend. He has used this for attention and fame since. He had pics of the first three victims. Very young Blondish Twinkie looking men. Then rambles on and on about how it could be him next. He is 40 years old with a little boys hair cut. Something just isn't right with this guy either. He continues to exploit these men, pretending to be an lgbt crusader while going around town pretending to cry and vomit at every turn but only when talking about if it had been him. May I never be blessed with such a "friend".

Oi Jess you're right! What old man is cruising gay sites to rent out rooms to young men?? Why is this weird behaviour allowed in the gay community? Is it because of the whole daddy kink thing?? Cause if that was my son I would be sickened to think he was living with an older man like that. It's automatically predatory. And I'm not upset but I do worry for young people a lot. Men have a false sense of security, which is partially why they engage in risky behavior that women have been taught to avoid. Many of the worlds worst, most prolific serial killers exclusively targeted men, so the sense of security actually works in the killers favor. Randy Kraft was a serial killer in Los Angeles who killed over 60 men and some were marines. It’s terrifying to think that an average man could plan his murders so well that he could eventually take down a much larger, stronger man. Serial killers are cunning and that’s the problem. Once you realize what’s going on, it’s too late. So use your best judgment and don’t let your sex drive dictate your behavior.

Through the love for his friend and investigating as things didn't add up, John brought more attention to the case! I remember seeing the news of this, reading into it.... absolutely appalled that the police honestly neglected everything. John is a true hero, a real friend and doesn't get the credit he deserves. Couldn't imagine how far this could have went on and how many more could have lost their lives with the police's failing the investigation. R.I.P. to the four beautiful souls and my condolences to all affected

It is so amazing that you never gave up. Most people would have, especially with so many forces against you. I hope you continue to fight and find answers for others in need.

What a brave, determined and compassionate man. Smart enough to follow the trail and have justice carried out. He has a heart of gold. I want to be his friend!!

This guy wasn't some long time friend, he was a roommate hed only known for about 6 weeks. Yet he dedicated himself to figuring this out and wouldn't give up. He worked harder than law enforcement did. Talk about a stand up guy. And he also seems really kind and humble.

They didn't link them, because they didn't care. Bless John for his attempts to call attention to what was happening.

Whoever picked the music for this docommentary deserves a raise! Lots of Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin! I just love BBC III lately.
Also, great doc. That gentleman doing his own investigation is so articulate and commendable. Such a sad story.

I love that this man did not back down. He kept seeking justice regardless of the police turning a blind eye to this.

The awkward moment that a member of the public has more common sense than a group of "detectives"... Shame on Barking Police.

The League of incompetent losers has just as much right to the honors and high paying and prestigious positions in society as do the conscientious and intelligent people, even though the incompetent posers don't and cannot do their jobs properly. They stick together in their leagues and their unions. You cannot blame them for striving (cut-throat acting and competing) to climb the career ladder in a world that is beyond their abilities.

Smart people don’t become police officers. It’s a low wage, no college degree needed job.
