Recently had a Viking 6030 apart to unfreeze components. When I plugged it back in, it started running by itself WITHOUT the foot pedal attached. I found a bad capacitor in the motor. Your video let me know the machine will run without it. Removed it and the machine now runs great! I have since read many technicians recommend taking them out before they cause issues. Thank you for helping those of us who refuse to give up on our older machines, the information we need to keep them going.
Found a matching capacitor in a scrapped fluorescent fixture. Most devices like hairdryers, blenders etc. got them, to prevent pops and noise in radios, stereos etc. Thank you for your tutorial. Soo much easier following you even though I'm an Educated electrician. Thanks again! 👍👍😊😊
Thank you very much! Had the same problem with my wife’s favorite long-running Husqvarna 4010 - and after thoroughly inspecting everything and looking for a video fixed by your advice in several minutes! Now will find replacement capacitors and put it back on service. All the best to you!
Thanks so much! I can't believe there's a video for my vintage (but well-loved) machine's problem! Saved it from the scrapheap! This could cure so many old machine's here in the UK and around the world....
Exactly what I was looking for, both how to get inside the controller and what might be responsible for the smell that began after 2 minutes of it running normally. 40 year old Singer 427 serviced in 2015 and barely used since then.
Thnak you so much! I have just brought my 1977 Futura out of retirement, for the tacking stitch, the machine went nuts! at least know I can use it, amazing video. again thank you
I had this problem. I am now led to believe that there is no reason to replace the capacitor (just remove it (was easy)), as the 'electrical noise suppression' it was there for (e.g. the sound on old, valve radios/tv's might 'crackle' when using machines) was a 1960's thing and is no longer required/needed. The pedal on my old Singer 328k works great without it 🙂
Well, not 'no reason' as they manage electrical interference which can cause issues with your, or even neighbour's homes. They are there for a reason but can operate without... like the silencer on a vehicle's exhaust; good to have, even if the driver is deaf as a post.
Just a word of advice, use a rated electricians screwdriver to protect yourself as the capacitors can still hold charge and you could get a shock, that screwdriver is just not suitable, make sure you short out the capacitor before removal also
That's what mine did! Mine is a Singer 185k and I first used it yesterday... all was going well and then suddenly when I walked away from the machine to get some more fabric, it started running by itself at high speed and scared the living hell out of me and also jammed itself in the process :/ I'm not confident enough to try and fix it myself
Thanks for the great video. I have a second capacitor in mine, there’s the one you have in the same place then there’s another one that goes from the live leg up to the top copper part. Do you have any comments on that? I need to replace the capacitor you show but I don’t know if I have a different circuit
Very helpful video. Thanks very Much! I wonder if you ever also considered to replicate old broken (bakelite) plugs by simply making them out of brown Resin. So they can look like the one you have on this Foot pedal.? Almost every Pfaff 260 or 332 has broken components like that. And they cost a lot. II am quite not sure if the use of such a casing is aloud, and if so, which specification is has to be (which resin chemicals). If someone has some Ideas or experience /expertise? I would be happy to hear it.
Love all your videos 🌞 I have recently inherited my aunts sewing machine singer 306k It needed badly new cables..... I forgot to take a picture before I started..... So I'm worried about I've put on the little cabel wrong on the box where the machine cabel meets the fot cabel..... (the part pluk you put into the machine).... And now I can't remember how 🙈.... I'm afraid I will burn the machine if it is wrong.... Can I ask you to send me a picture if it is possible.... Or explain it to me in some way.... 😇..... Sorry to disturb you...... Thanks very much! My old singer sewing machine 327k starts running on its own without me touching the speed controller. I will check this out on line. Thank you
I've been applying this to a number of foot pedals with success. Now I'm facing a foot pedal with the top and bottom held together with springs and I don't know how to open it.
Hi. When I was working with the machine, smoke came out of the controller and it was from the capacitor. I replaced it, but now it does not work at all. What am I doing? Thanks
Awwww i had this problem... Took it out and the speed was like super fast when I turned it on and pressed the pedal, i bought a new capacitor thinking that would fix it.. But it still runs super fast with no difference on pedal pressure 😢
That can be a problem with the variable resistor in the foot controller. Maybe you could get someone to take a look or keep an eye out for another foot controller.
@@InStitches thank you :) in the end i wiggled with the carbon pile, it was like stuck and also the screw under neath which i had to nearly take out buttttt it worked!!.... And then a plastic gear went inside the machine so i need to order a new one 😂
Great Video. I have a question related to the capacitor. I have a similar situation but the capacitor is really old model and there is not thing written on it. (Singer 198 - which was manufactured around mid 60s) Could I replace it with a 1 microfarad, 275V capacitor? My machine using 220V as well, so it should be identical. Many thanks!
I have an old sewing machine, In where motor is there is a 0,1uf 250v Rifa capacitor. Which is exploded and leaked out some kind of brown mess. I was wondering, I was told that its a suppression filter. Do I need to have it and can use the machine without? Thanks

Just happened to my Husqvarna as well. Thank you for the video!
Thx. My biggest issue was actually figuring out how to open the foot pedal.
All sorted now.
Happy Wife !!!

Great video, luckily I had a suitable capacitor in stock, the 40 year old sewing machine lives again! All the best from England.
Great to hear. Thanks.

Most of the capacitors have bleed resistors installed in parallel so I've never had any issues. Thanks anyway.
Most helpful advice yet again! Two snips and the problem on my 1945 201K foot pedal fixed. Most grateful thanks! 👍
Wow you saved me money. I fixed my singer starlet for less than a giver. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this as it has helped me get sewing again without a huge cost.

Thank you! It worked for my old Singer. I had to snip the capacitor out as it was soldered in place.
Excellent!
Thank you, actually just did this as well as i read your messege. worked great!
Thank you so much! I nearly went out to buy a new machine!

I just ordered a new foot pedal.
Wouldnt that work too? :/ I know I guess I could have looked for this video before I did it!
Thank you very much. Capacitor burnt out just as indicated. Singer model 507, Gloucestershire, UK

HI., Did it work for you? I have a similar machine, 328k and I+m so sad this same thing is happening to it
Thank you for the information! I appreciate you.
Thank you so much for this video.... Its really helpful
Thank you so much❤❤❤
Thank you very much for your help! We were just about to buy a new machine!
Great to hear the video helped keep another machine going. Thanks.
Where would i find the capacitor in a knee controlled Singer 306
This video was a life saver, thank you!!
I've been applying this to a number of foot pedals with success. Now I'm facing a foot pedal with the top and bottom held together with springs and I don't know how to open it.
If it is a knee operated version, is it the same in the controller?
Thank you very much ! :)
Hi.
When I was working with the machine, smoke came out of the controller and it was from the capacitor. I replaced it, but now it does not work at all.
What am I doing?
Thanks
Why would you replace the capacitor? Have I missed something? If it still runs without, is it important to replace?
The machine will run without it but it's a good idea to have them in there to stop electrical "noise" on the line. Thanks.
Thanks a lot
Simple. Once you've been shown how to do it! Thanks.
That was helpful. Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!

I have a question related to the capacitor.
I have a similar situation but the capacitor is really old model and there is not thing written on it. (Singer 198 - which was manufactured around mid 60s)
Could I replace it with a 1 microfarad, 275V capacitor?
My machine using 220V as well, so it should be identical.
Many thanks!
Normally that capacitor is 0.1 microfarad but it would pay to take it to your mechanic to be sure.
How can I slow the sewing machine modifying the foot controller?
You could use an appropriate resistor. Your local electrician should be able to help there. Thanks.
Can I buy a capacitor from a different brand other than Rifa?
Yes, as long as it's the same rating. Thanks.
What does the capacitor do
It an electrical noise suppressor.
My motor is stinking .I wonder if bbn it's a blown capacitor. However bbn the machine does not run by itself
There could be several reasons your motor is emitting a smell. It may pay to take it in for service. Thanks.
@@InStitches thanks👩🌾
Very good ☺️☺️☺️
Thanks 😊
I have a singer that’s less than a year old and it’s doing this 😅
I have an old sewing machine, In where motor is there is a 0,1uf 250v Rifa capacitor.
Which is exploded and leaked out some kind of brown mess.
I was wondering, I was told that its a suppression filter. Do I need to have it and can use the machine without?
Thanks
The machine can be used without it but it should be replaced if possible.
@@InStitchesThanks
👍😊
Thanks for this video it helped
But I still have a question can I use motor controller without the capacitor
