Very well explained. A joy to see the detailed explanation, and a greater joy that there is no annoying background music to this video. Nice tip about the gap, overheating, and the nut needing threadlocker. Fine details that make such a difference. Many thanks!!
Many thanks for the video. @5:52, if you notice, there is a lot of rotation of the square block that makes the full throttle happen; well, between that metal plate and the nut, there is a plastic or Bakelite pad. The hole in that pad is NOT centered. The pad is slightly higher on the top, it should be lower on the bottom. If you rotate that plastic pad 180 degrees around the screw, the longer portion of it will be against the bottom of the control box which will keep that assembly from rotating when it's touched, or when the adjustment screw is turned. Once again, many thanks.
This video was incredibly helpful, learned a lot. I needed extra help and they responded back very promptly with advice how to fix my issue and it worked. Thanks Lori!!!
Hi, Thanks for the lovely clear video. Last week I bought an electric 1955 99k for £10 non working I stripped and cleaned the foot pedal it worked at one speed fast I thought perhaps that's how they run. Then yesterday saw your vid wound the end screw in a bit more and now it goes as slow as I want and as fast as I want. These machines are great I am picking up a hand crank 99k tomorrow fully working for £20. I going to turn into a 99k horder lol. Also I have found a fiddle base I like the look of good working order £100 .
This video was so amazingly helpful. Thank you! With your help I fixed my foot and my featherweight is running like a dream! Again, thank you so much 😊
Thankyou for this video, it helped me already understand a bit more about my universail foot controler BUT so I have still one question and I hope you ore someone can help me!!! So the ceramic case inside my foorcontroler gets uncredibly hot within less then 5 minutes of sewing and it doesnt matter if I do it full power or super slow… even the cover thats made of plastic gets smelly cause of the heat ontoo plastic 🔥 hope you can answer my question thankyouuuuu
Thank you for explaining all that so nicely. I adjusted my foot-controller without knowing all that to slow down my machine, which it did. The controller does not get hot when I sew. My question is: if I did something wrong, is it possible that I could damage my sewing machine? (Singer "Heavy Duty" 4423)
2 questions: does the current travel 2 paths then - Straight across the copper tab for full power and through the carbon washers for any speed BUT full power? 2nd, would you not be able to adjust that screw towards the back if that nut (towards the middle) is already tight? I’m assuming it’s like a set screw - you loosen one thing, make your adjustments, and then tighten that thing back up to prevent movement
Hi from the UK, I have a Pfaff 297-1 sewing machine. I bought it on eBay cheap (£18) as not working but in very good condition. Ime no expert, but think the foot pedal may be faulty and poss not working. But not sure. When the pedal is plugged in and i press the foot pedal, my machine wont run. The light works ok though. But the machine will not run when i press the foot pedal. The foot pedal looks quite modern, clean/new looking. Its the type with carbon inside, I am not sure what u call this type, but power is going into the sewing machine for the light, but pressing the pedal won't make the machine run. I tested the volts at the end that plugs into the machine and the constant volts side is 180volt and is permanent, I assume this controls power to the light and is working. But the foot pedals "switched volts" is only 15 volts when the pedal is fully pressed. So, can i assume that's why my machine isn't working ?. Should it be more Volts, for example 100 to 240v aprox when fully pressing the foot pedal ?. I don't really want to buy a new pedal until i am sure mine is at fault, As i say, i don't appear to have much volts when pressing the foot pedal, It all looks good inside the pedal, Nothing to me is obviously faulty in there, but i am no expert. What could be wrong with the pedal ?.. Any help/Advice is much appreciated, Thanks-Dave in a very cold windy UK....
Sir, I live in Chile, so far I have seen just one Featherweight besides mine in my country, so no one around to ask about. my foot controller starts really fast and if you get the foot out keeps running at high speed. I will appreciate if you could me help me and show how to fix this. Have no idea if the problem is on the foot controller, or wrong wiring in the inlet into the machine Regards from Chile, South America.
Hi Carmon, and thanks for the Facebook page welcome ! I spent most of the day following the Featherweight tutorials on cleaning and oiling in preparation for sewing - Im pretty confidant I have done that ok, - I connected the plug to electricity - that part looks quite tidy, however once switching it on it immediately began sewing fast without anything touching the foot control. I tried that a few times - same each time. I the watched the one on foot control adjustment and tried the adjustment you described but it's still the same. Is it likely to be a problem in the actual plug or wiring do you think? I will take it to be serviced if necessary but thought I would give it a try. many thanks for any suggestions.
Featherweight Shop Thanks, but it wasn’t capacitors - I had already had that problem with a 99k I have. Sadly Ive been told the Featherweight needs all new electrics - I’m not sure how much that will cost - I will need to get a quote locally. I was really hoping it would be something simple! Thanks.

I've adjusted my foot controller plate to the 1/8" on the porcelain. Now, are the metal tabs from each terminal (up by the nut/set screw) supposed to make actual contact with the moving plate, when the pedal is fully depressed? I hope I've explained that clearly. I can't attach a photo.
Actually, belay all of that...occurred to me that the bulb is not so much a power-on indicator, as a work light so you can see what you are doing at needle end...would explain why it is cowled, wouldn't it...the cord power-point plug was found on an examination just then to have loose screws on the inside wire contacts...I did not really believe that something that simple would be preventing it working, but after tightening those two brass plug screws, it is now off and running...and the lightbulb which I had pulled out and which does have looseness between the glass part and base, even still works...proves that sometimes it still does pay off to tinker with things with which you have no idea or familiarity, apart from I've seen inside a power-plug before..
Hello...can you tell me if the bulb working is necessary for the machine to work? I have a nice-looking 222k machine, have never worked a sewing machine b4, I plug its foot controller in at power point, connect cord plug to machine socket, press button, no response, and the bulb does not illuminate which I'm not sure if bulb is blown or not...
You can use a drop of oil on the hinge, or a synthetic grease like Triflow where the post is rubbing against the ceramic block. However, grease and oil are conductors of electricity and could smoke if gets too hot. Use a minimal amount.
hi, im hoping you MAYBE can help me? i have this problem with my machine that no matter HOW gently i press the foot controller, i can NOT make it go slow enough, is that a tuning issue or? Please help :(
Fix the gap as he explained it. You can buy a FEELER GAUGE from Harbor Freight for $5 that has thickness panels that gives you exactly 1/8", or 2mm, etc. Use that to make the fine tuned gap, much like a spark plug in a car. If gap is too close, machine will not run slow. Fix the gap. Also tighten the center screw. Watch this video 5 times.
I have a Singer 431G with a button bakelite foot pedal. I opened it and took out the carbon discs and unfortunately 5 on each side were broken? Does this mean I can not use it any longer? Is it possible to replace them/buy new discs? If so, do you know where you can buy them? I live in Sweden, EU.

I had to force pry out the plastic casing, only to find out, it does not look like the one on the video, it is almost empty, it has a small rectangular circuit board not tweekable with a screw driver, nothing like that, no mechanical parts inside, just a small circuit board.
Loctite Threadlocker comes in red, blue... different levels of firmness. It is NOT a glue. It simply makes it a bit harder for the nut or screw to come off and jams it in place like melted sugar that hardened on something. A glue is not meant to come off, but Threadlocker comes off easily with a little force. Useful when you don't want things jiggling around or loosening up when driving or sewing.

Anyone know why my, m.c.p.k foot pedal started to smoke, it worked my machine without me even putting my foot on the pedal and then it started to smoke
Did you watch this video? He just explained why. The gap at the end of the ceramic plate needs to be 1/8". If those contacts are sticking then its going to malfunction by continuous running, heating up without running, or going from 0 to 60 full throttle. Fix the gap, contacts, screws. Overhaul the pedal, give it a good cleaning. There are carbon disks inside that also need cleaning. Check out the link I posted in a comment above. One other reason it could be smoking is that a capacitor inside the pedal blew up. Take it out, most of the time, you don't need it. You can replace it with another capacitor, and that involves desoldering, then resoldering. All very do-able but you need solder supplies and a quick tutorial.
Very well explained. A joy to see the detailed explanation, and a greater joy that there is no annoying background music to this video. Nice tip about the gap, overheating, and the nut needing threadlocker. Fine details that make such a difference. Many thanks!!

Would a foot controller that is out of adjustment be related to the speed of the machine? I feel like my 221 is running slower than it used to.

Can you oil those metal moving parts? Mine had a squeak and after oiling everything above, I realized it was coming from the controller.
You can use a drop of oil on the hinge, or a synthetic grease like Triflow where the post is rubbing against the ceramic block. However, grease and oil are conductors of electricity and could smoke if gets too hot. Use a minimal amount.
