    When Bronn tells Tyrion he won’t fight for him, he foreshadows Oberyn’s death. He says maybe he’d get lucky and dance around the Mountain until he gets tired and drops his sword. “Get him off his feet somehow, but one misstep and I’m dead.” Described Oberyn’s fight exactly 😢

    • @owenleal
      @owenleal Год назад +264

      The difference is Bronn would probably have won since he had no personal beef with the Mountain. It was Oberyn's anger and emotion that killed him, the Mountain was getting his cheeks clapped up until the very last moment. I think if it had been Bronn, he really could have pulled it off. But at the same time he made the right call not risking it.

    Even Oberyn's "weakness" is likeable -- he loved his sister and her children so much that even after years he is still seeking vengeance for their gruesome deaths. He would go up in public, accuse one of the, if not THE, most powerful men in the realm and call them out on this injustice and frankly war crime that has been committed against his family. His quest is just and we feel for him as the audience. We root for him. We want so much for him to succeed. And his failure and death is devastating in itself, but amplified because it was tied to Tyrion's fate as well, another very well liked character. George really shined in creating Oberyn.

    • @morgenzon69
      @morgenzon69 Год назад +34

      The show just plays it off as his lover's vengeance, but he's trained his daughters as fighters since they were little to exact vengeance and it is what gets them killed in the end. I'd say that's why vengeance is his weakness; he doesn't recognize that pursuing it endlessly will ultimately get his entire family killed, when it is his family he wishes to protect.

      It's not that we think he's a villain necessarily, just that we suspect his agenda to be the same as most of the characters in King's landing, a player in the Game of Thrones. His agenda at first seems rather vulture like, to come and twist things up because there's clearly a power struggle in Westeros. In some respects, he is a player of the game, but the twist is that he is not after power, he's after vengeance. That's what makes him more sincere and likeable as a character amongst the backstabbers and schemers in King's Landing. He never lies or schemes and is open about his nature, and you sense he is hiding something, but he's actually not. Bare in mind we see Varys and Shae testify against Tyrion before that, all of Tyrion's allies turn against him, and in comes Oberyn with a goal other than self preservation or power, and that's the twist.

    Oberyn Martell was one of my favourite characters from the show. When I started reading the books, he became even more so. One of the most interesting things for me was reading the books and discovering the true purpose of Oberyn's visit to Kings Landing. Yes, he wanted revenge for his sister (he says that repeatedly), but he also seemed to be trying to provoke the Lannisters into harming him(?)so that it could give Dorne justification for starting a war with them. He perhaps was even trying to sow division between them by supporting Tyrion and being his champion (at the time probably thinking that he was going to win the fight), knowing that that would provoke Tywin and Cersei as he already knew that they didn't like Tyrion very much. If Oberyn had won the fight, he might've succeeded in that goal. He was definitely in Kings Landing for some specific purpose like that, otherwise why would his brother, Doran, send him of all people on his behalf? Doran knew Oberyn's temperament and knew what he was doing when he sent him there. Doran is the grass that hides the viper (Oberyn) before he strikes. The fact that Tywin was shitting himself before he died was probably because of Oberyn, and the mere subtlty of that kind of conspiracy tells me that Doran was involved as well.
    I don't know. This comment was supposed to be about how much I miss that character, but now here we are, discussing conspiracies. I miss all of those characters actually, and that world. George needs to finish those books and give us the ending that we all deserve dammit!

Oberyn was actually a breath of fresh air for many reasons, but especially because we hadn't had a similar character since Ned, Bobby B, and Drogo all died in season 1. Honestly, once Oberyn died in season 4, other single-season characters never held a candle to these four.

    Oberyn's death is very shocking, but Bronn interestingly predicted it almost exactly. When Bronn was explaining to Tyrion why he did not want to fight the Mountain, he acknowledged that he, as a smaller nimbler man, could possibly "dance" around the Mountain, slowly wearing him down, and could win by doing so. This is of course how Oberyn defeated the mountain, literally "dancing" around him with acrobatics and quick maneuvering. However, Bronn stated that one minor slip-up would allow the immensely dangerous Mountain to kill him. Oberyn stepped in the wrong spot, and looked away at just the wrong moment; one minor slip-up.

    Oberyn was so good that I, who had read the books in high school in the mid-00's watched was what then the greatest show on earth in a room filled with people that did not know the twist was coming.... During the fight, I was SO HYPED by how good it all was, that I let myself join in the cult-like mentality that took over, and I found myself utterly engaged with the prospect of his ASSURED VICTORY even when I knew rationally that the writers would never rewrite what is one of the greatest plot points in the books...
    So, basically, a character so well-written, so well-adapted and brilliantly portrayed by their performer, that it made someone who had by then engaged actively and quite feverishly with this story for the past TEN YEARS or so lose their mind completely from the twist... The emotional resonance the character produced was great enough so as to blind me from the obvious truth that was about to hit, and I was deeply shocked by the "twist" that was not in fact a twist at all. I remember that watching the show during S3 with the same group of friends who had never read the books, during the Red Wedding I was no longer focused on the screen, but on my friends' reactions. But, during Viper x Mountain, I was fully, utterly invested.
    10/10.... DnD are shitty writers, but they were very good with adapting the material while they had it, or at least the parts which they chose to adapt. Their choices of what to leave out were not committed or roadmapped, which is why the show suffered so much. The first four seasons give us such a rich tapestry, that is entirely ignored/simplified by latter seasons - even if you didn't read the books there is no ignoring that. They JUST KINDA FORGOT. The "just kinda forgot" moment is so emblematic because I have it in my heart of hearts that you can actually see it in his face, real-time, that he JUST KINDA REMEMBERED that it makes no fucking sense at all just as the question is being answered. The tragedy of how this 'greatest show on earth' became the greatest shitshow of all time at least gave us neverending RUclips commentary content, so there's that...
    GRRM will never finish the books in this life, so I guess thanks for the memories everyone - and Pedro Pascal is definitely on top of that list, along with Charles Dance. They had the benefit of being "written off the show" by the original author, so they left when their arcs were properly and logically concluded within the context of this rich tapestry of a story that we had until S4. Rest in pieces my lovely Prince.
