Oriental Rug Repair...Don't Use Duct Tape

  • Welcome!
This video shows an actual hand knotted rug that was repaired using Duct Tape. While we do love Duct Tape for many of our own projects around the house, using it to repair a rug is definitely not a good use.
Even if a proper repair is beyond the budget, a simple stitch to hold the seam together will slow down the eventual further opening of the torn area. Duct Tape will eventually fail and may make a proper repair more difficult if you later chose to invest the money into a rug like the one in the video.
    We suggest two options:
    1. Re-weaving the foundation yarns which actually hold the wool pile yarns into the rug. Then re-weave the pile back into the foundation
    or a more economical solution:
    2. Patch the rug with a donor piece of rug from a similar style rug.
Also, as a last resort you can opt to have a fiber glass patch adhered onto the back to hold the two sides together, not the best way to go but very affordable.

Thank you for this video. We've had an 8'x10' wool rug we bought from Crate & Barrel years ago that has been unraveling on the short fringe edge. Its really bad and is now probably 2 inches back in some spots. Is there a way for me to repair this without making it worse? It seems that I would need to establish a straight line and somehow sew it up. Do you have any suggestions? We really love this rug.

      Hi
To stop the progression of the unraveling pull the yarns a little beyond where they are now a do an over cast stitch making sure to the needle and thread goes into the backing (foundation) yarns and catches the face fibers.
To do a real repair a new portion of foundation has to be woven into the existing foundation then wool yarns matching the colors have to be woven through the new foundation. Re-weaving is alot of work and best left to a pro.
The simplest method is using adhesive but i would avoid that because if you decide later to do a "real repair" removing all the adhesive may not be possible.
      Good luck ☺

Help? Not sure what we can do, but....contact a repair specialist in your area. Usually new fringe can be sewn onto one or both ends..won't be cheap but will look great

Hi Dave, a donor "generously" gave us a torn carpet... wondering what to do and if you have a carpet seam product to recommend. My thought was to cross stitch format (to align), then apply seam tape (preferably non-iron). It is a truly beautiful carpet, with troubled areas (no noticeable rot). May I send photos?

My rug has dry rot and the patching options are awful. It is super expensive to reweave… what can I do? Can a patch be put under the existing dry rot area?

      Hi
As a temp measurer you can glue a fiberglass mesh to the back side of the rotted areas, which can be a lot of work.
You might want to consider replacing the rug if there is extensive dry rot.

Hi Dave, what do you recommend to clue back on the cloth liner on the back of a wool rug

    • @DavidMavilio
      @DavidMavilio  5 лет назад +3

      Hi Jose-
Latex adhesives, sold in most hardware store work really well. The adhesive can be use on fabric/cloth as well as resilient tiles and carpet tiles. Like all products, some are better than others. If the cloth on the back of a rug is worn you can buy a painters' cloth tarp, cut to size and glue directly on the back of your rug.
Note: pre wash the tarp to allow for shrinkage
Also make sure the area(s) being glued are clean and lose dried up latex is vacuumed away.
Let us know how it turns out!!

how do you repair a side tear like that when the knots are falling out?

    • @DavidMavilio
      @DavidMavilio  3 года назад

Reweave the foundation then weave the wool via knots through the foundation
      Or
Cut in a patch if possible, which is much cheaper than reweaving but not not as nice

Someone broke glass on my oriental rug and then dragged heavy containers across said broken glass. The damage amounts to what looks like snags that have been cut. Things being what they are, I need to do the repairs myself. My plan is to loop stitch each end of the break back together. Please any advice you can give me will be greatly appreciated and just might save the culprit of this stupidity my boiling anger! 😉🤗

Hopefully you are only simmering (not boiling) now ☺
Before you do any repairs make sure that all broken glass has been completely vacuumed up. Small pieces of glass can easily be imbedded in a child's or pet's feet/hands.
Vacuum the top then, if possible turn the rug upside down and run the vacuum on the backside which will loosen small pieces of glass so that they can fall to the floor...then vacuum the top again.
If there is enough material to tie onto your idea of creating a new loop seems ok. If there is not enough fiber to tie to you may want to cut the threads a deep down into the pile as possible so they do not get snagged on furniture or feet and create more pulls.
      Good luck, stay calm

      Hi
You would need to take it to a local oriental rug company. They would have to remove all the adhesive from the tape then reweave all areas. This will be a very expensive repair. Make sure the rug is worth the investment.
      Good luck
