Find it wonderful that an artist conducts an orchestra while putting himself at the piano. You really have to have music "in the blood" to do that! What a beautiful proof of trust towards the interpreters. Beautiful generosity, really. Thank you for this. +Henrique Gorgone
This is yet another example of a classical concerto where the composer wrote for Oboes and Horns but surely must have expected Bassoons to also be part of the traditional Basso Continuo and play along with the Cello and Bass part. At the time that Haydn wrote this he was engaged full-time in Esterhazy where the orchestra also included full-time bassoon players. It was standard practice for bassoons to be part of the orchestra when other wind instruments were included, and only because they were not printed in the published score they are nearly always left out by modern orchestras. This is also sadly the case with many of Mozart's concertos too. As Neal Zaslaw has pointed out (on p.457 of "Mozart's Symphonies: Context, Performnce Practice, Reception") regarding the use of bassoon in the basso continuo during the classical period, “Josef Haydn is on record in 1768 as favouring one on a part in the bass-line instruments, at least in certain circumstances: ‘ The bassoon can be omitted if absolutely necessary, but I would rather have it, especially since the bass in obbligato throughout. And I prefer a band with three bass instruments - cello, bassoon and double bass ..."
Now this reminds me more of Haydn rather then his later works. It was the times when they used to say young Mozart & Haydn were known as the most prime composers of the day.
2:40 There are certain parts of Mozart that are beautiful. Its from intense harmony changes like in chopin. The rest is all giddy and happy and the style is certain.
i'd really like to understand what happens in the mind of the pianist when he plays, it seems to be very intense and fascinating; Dank an Haydn und Göteborgs Symfoniker!
I love, love love this! Mr. Zacharias is not only unique but probbably waaaayyy above what you would even consider a genius Musician & Conductor! Have never seen so much skill, passion, and story-telling paired with unimaginably difficult multi-tasking. Wow. Forget about Lang Lang and co. :D
I think the cell phone scene should stay in here. It was a substancial part of this specific concerto. Every performance has it's own soul, every aspect of it, every breath of audience made that execution of masterpiece. You can not just edit artistic work after it happend.
Will you permit me to illustrate your point with an unashamedly low-brow example. When Elvis performs the American Trilogy a young girl screams her lungs out at the unbearable tension (6:17) which frankly makes the performance a classic. ruclips.net/video/7JoDv7WmK5U/видео.html
Or this performance of Wagner where the lectern collapses (5:50) with a crash. It doesn't enhance the performance but I wouldn't want it editing out. ruclips.net/video/wXh5JprKqiU/видео.html

Yes, yes, it's a bit unusual today, but Edwin Fischer did, and Barenboim does. Haydn and Mozart did - it was common for the composer to play and conduct at the same time.

exactly! and irrespective of him being standing, he started perfectly and played like it was nothing as soon as he sat
It is not that hard when you have been born good musical ear. A great luck. And of course, yes, passion for music.
Love Haydn's concerto in D. It was my first that I learned and memorized. Will always he special to me. It's so much fun to perform.

The mood swings back and forth, from a minor to a major so abruptly. Love it!
What a touch from the pianist!🤯
What I love about conducting is that is looks like a silent conversation with the rest of the orchestra
Devastated for the part in minor key that begins at 3'29''... it's divine and very moving...

Ein großartiges Werk von Meister Haydn! Und eine sehr schöne Wiedergabe!

THE CELLPHONE WAS ESSENTIAL!!
If it wasn't for that cellphone I would have never found this performance haha
Un concierto que parece compuesto por un dios del Olimpo.
The cellphone solo was the best part. Why they cutted it off?
It wasnt
did this concert had a fail with the celphone of a member of the orchesta?
or was this concert edited?
Yeah it was this one
I think it was around 3:50 so they edited it out
I am really sorry to hear this
It wasn't a member of the orchestra, but someone in the audience. Zacharias stopped playing and told the person in the audience "don't answer".
He savagely continued
