Zacharias is living the music. It is fascinating to see a man so dedicated for this song. He single-handedly both conducted the keyboard concerto and played the keyboard. What a virtuoso. The music literally conducts through him.
He certainly takes some creative liberties but I love it, if I were there I would be thoroughly pleased with the performance, as am I just watching it here. It's the sort of performance that gets better each time you listen to it. Thank you so much for uploading it!
I grew up with RbtJ.Lurtsema and Seiji Ozawa, and have seen them all: Perahia, the incomparable Brendel, sauntering-fratboy Pogorelich, etc. The two greatest classical pianists of my youth are, unquestionably, Maurizio Pollini and Christian Zacharias, cut-diamond precision and soaring tonality. Keyboards, from Bach to Schubert to Chopin, melt me on the inside, like ice cream in the sun. Gorgeous, riveting, flawless craftsmanship from Maestro Zacharias once again. The man is a living legend.
I admire directing from keyboard. The beautiful moments were masterful and the flourishes into free expression were as if Mozart was making fun of Haydn.
