Door weight x half door lenght (because weight falls in the middle ) = distance from hinge to mounting of strut on the door x force of strut . Out of this equation you find the strut; add a bit extra if there are additional springs/factors. Now the only thing I didn't figure off online is where the other side of the strut (not on the lid) falls to be ok; roughly I see that there is a 15-20/75-70 split of angles (from strut to surfaces) if the door is open at 90 degrees (the 20/70 being the angles of the tirangle formed by the strtut and the sides of the box/lid). No offence guys, but you're taking a stab in the dark unprepared - not that helpful: you can learn at least the basics.
Also for doors under 6 feet (1.5 meters) I see that having a strut that is 50-60% of the door length is recommended . For wider doors (or very very heavy), they recommend 70-80% of the length of the door (sturdier rods, brackets etc). The reason for having the strut at least half the door size is to directly compensate for the weight with an equal size arm in the momentum equation (the one posted at the start of this post; force x distance from the pivot point all added up need to equal 0 for balance - usually I see recommended to add 10-15% to that balance to have a shock strong enough to push the door up).
I hope this helps some confused researchers. I know I am one. I soon as I figure what is the recommended angle of a strut, I think I got this 100%.

Thanks guys!! Can u maybe do another video about basics of where to put mounts for new applications? (2/3 to 3/4 of the size of the opening from the hinge to the fixed pin / 3/4 to 7/8 from the hinge on the moving door)???

Thanks guys for the informative video but now answer me this. I am rehabing an old Primo XL Oval BBQ that had 6"/60lb struts innitially installed for the lid on it but I don't remember which direction the strut faces. Barell on lid side or on base of the BBQ? Yes I had called technical support and was not convinced of their certainty of an answer as they weren't even aware that they made a lift system as such, lol. I would imagine that either way would have its benefits but I want to install it the way it was originally engineered. Please help!
