    • How to Remove Transmis...
This is a video showing you how to remove a transmission out of a 93 Honda Prelude Si. The procedure for any Honda using an "H" or "F" series powertrain w/ hydraulic clutch is the same so this video would help with those too. This would include all 92 and up preludes and 4 cylinder accords 90-2002, and some acura Cl's 97-99.
Part 3 includes the final steps and the transmission coming out.

    Nice.
I don't know if the CL has hanger brackets on the tranny like my 96 Accord (I know that both of these particular vehicles have similar parts), but I was able attach a tie-down strap with S-hooks that hooked onto the hanger brackets. The strap was secured to a board I laid across the engine compartment. The strap had a cam-type buckle so it supported the tranny once it was off and I could slowly lower it by releasing the buckle. Still had to wrestle with it, but it made it easier to put on.

@HondaHowTo1 yeah, there was a hidden bolt that prevented it. once it was removed. transmission came out like butter. Now gotta remember which bolt goes where. lol

This is very helpful. Even though mine is going to be on a 91corolla rather than a prelude the general idea of how to get it out of the car without taking the engine out applies. So you just lowered your jack as you tried to get the transmission off the engine? So whats the trick to get it back in? Balance the transmission on the jack while sliding it under the car?

@HondaHowTo1 Yeah, I figured the reinstallation might be a little challenging, especially without a shop lift. It's still better than paying a shop to do the job.

The transmission mount that you pulled off the has the tree bolt hole I was wondering if you know what the part number is so I can buy new one.. the mount you pulled off in the beginning of this video. I’ve been having a really hard time finding it and need one so I can put this new motor back in my car.. Hell if you have one I’ll buy it off you

Well, I managed to do everything right. Got a transmission jack. Car isn't high enough to get the transmission on the stand from the outside. So I have to do it from the engine bay. I've failed trying to get the transmission in many times. Clutch gets out of alignment. I struggle getting it in due to a tight space. I'd like to get the mounting studs for the transmission mount, but they seem very stuck in deep and hard to get something to grip them to take out, since they get stuck a lot manuever

I'm doing a 5 speed manual swap on my automatic 01 Accord. I decided that it would be easier to swap the whole engine/transmission assembly out rather then pull the tranny out so I'm buying a newer F23 engine and doing all the work outside of the vehicle then borrowing a hoist. Have you ever pulled the engine out the top? how tough is it?

Is there only 3 bolts on top or 4? I know you say 4 in the video but you only show 3

Have done transmission replacements on rear wheel drive vehicles before, but this will be my first attempt on a FWD transverse (1997 Acura CL 2.2 with an automatic trans.) In my RWD experience, it has been necessary to use jacks, stands, or hoists depending on what you had, and prop the engine so that it doesn't tilt forwards or backwards on the front two motor mounts once the rear support (transmission mount) is removed. Failing to do this would result in fan and radiator damage at the very minimum and possibly worse. Is that going to be an issue on this job as well or does the Acura have some other motor mount scheme that is going to prevent the engine from trying to rock and tilt and fall off the remaining mounts once the transmission is removed?

I have a 2002 Honda Accord value package. I am contemplating getting a junkyard transmission to replace my automatic that shifts horribly!! How do I find out what kind of transmission I have and what is compatible with it. I know 98-2002 4 cylinders are all very similar. I'm not a mechanic but did replace my timing belt and water pump successfully.

So... great job. But im just curious...You took your entire transmission out just to make a video.....???? Maybe when doing this you should have purchased some replacement bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, motor mounts or any other easy to do replacement pieces while taking the ENTIRE transmission out... I do applaud you for going through all of this to show the world how to take their transmission out though, most people cant even make it on the internet to watch this video...

How long in real time did it take you to remove and reinstall the transmission? It would appear that it takes you somewhere around 3 hours.

Not yet. I had oil buildup all inside my transmission, on the outside of my transmission, all over my oil pan, back of the engine (where oil cooler is). So I spent time cleaning it off (pita). My liquid gasket can had no pressure so couldn't use it and the oil pan gasket between the oil pan and RMS plate was cracked. So I had to order parts for it and liquid gasket, I broke two cotter pins on shift cables. So right now it's still on blocks and transmission still on the ground. :(

Hey. I removed all my bolts from my transmission, but it doesn't wiggle like that. It is just stuck in place like I did leave a bolt in, but I've rechecked many times and there is no bolt left in on mounting =\

  • @punk86

well, basically.what happened was when I was taking off the transmission to get it back out to see if it did misalign. The transmission just wouldn't come off and I had to take off the pressure plate bolts just to get the bugger off. :(. I thought it might have been misaligned when fighting with it, because it just wouldn't slide in no matter how much I tried.

Well they had bad bearings or so that clogged up and destroyed trans among other theories. Trans failiur was common in 2000-2003 models only though. other years would have to be a coincidence
