Hi Everyone! I was a little shocked to learn that Chevy hasn't updated this van in 15+ years. Personally, I think it's way overpriced, but technically it's cheaper than two of it's competitors: (1) the Ford Transit (MSRP: $34,510); and the (2) Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (MSRP: $34,494) If you've got a second, check them both out online. I haven't driven either (yet), but they look WAAAAAAY nicer. Let me know your thoughts! Especially if you don't think the Transit and/or Sprinter is a fair apples-to-apples comparison. Stay safe everyone!!
Ever heard of the Toyota HiAce? That's the van we need in the US and Canada. They're sold in Mexico and elsewhere, and it's a super solid van. But sadly they don't meet our safety standards and it's not fast enough on the American highways. but it's very reliable and durable
Neither the Ford Transit or the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van are direct competitors with the Chevrolet Express. The Ford Econoline is the best comparison. Both the Chevy Express and the Ford Econoline are built with a body-on-frame design.
When looking at the price of the Chevrolet Express you should compare it to the price of a 3/4 or 1 ton pickup truck. The basic work vans are actually a bargain for the amount of work you can use them for. Configured correctly you can tow 10,000 pounds with the Express. Maintenance on these vehicles is also much easier when compared to the Transit or Sprinter Van. Most people actually prefer they come with an unfinished interior because they will customize the vehicle for its intended purpose.
Also its a truck based van, whereas its competition are transaxel car-like unibodys. You should do more research into the design and architecture of these products- it'll keep your opinions from sounding naive.
They haven’t changed the design in 25 years but it still does the job!
Exactly!
I wish the car would have been cleaner.
Does GMC still sell the Savanna the luxury truck?
Lavonte A yes
Yup, 1996 was the last major change, and they did what they call a "Redesign" in 2003, with a new front end design and new interior design. In 2008, they gave it a new instrument panel, but since then, no changes. However, they're giving it a 400-HP 6.6L V8 for the 2021 model year!!! :)
You can have an old 2007 Chevy Express and you can tell people it is a brand new 2020 and they will never know, they will believe you. That’s CRAZY 😆.
I know, right! In fact, that's exactly what's I'd recommend doing. Buy a used model for $7,000 and save yourself 25k!
You can always tell how old a Chevy van is by the Amount of paint that has fallen off of it.
@@100RentalCars Lol... I just bought a 2007 for $7900 last week. And that was with my trade in. Smooth ride but I'm concerned bcuz I feel I'm on a NASCAR track with the high pitch whining noise. Could b the tires, however, my dog seems very stressed and uncomfortable. It's loud. Also, gotta take it back to the dealer as the airbag light is staying on. Other than that I'm very satisfied.
@@gerald4nomads lol... Soooo true!
you can tell a 2020 from a 07😂
These vans will last through the apocalypse. Built like tanks.
Nostalgic to see the old GM interior. They have come so far with newer models!
The side doors have a release strap to allow them to swing out wider to get the true width of the opening. FYI
I bought my 2021 used chevy express 2500 extended, in November 2022....I love my truck, but my only complaint is, and I assume it may be my transmission, it tends to "kick", when I stop, after driving awhile.... like I got hit from behind. I took it to a transmission shop but they swear they felt nothing when they drove it. As I drove away, it kicked pretty hard....so I dunno.... other than that, it's a great van.
Literally just rented one of these today, go home and saw this video in my sub box! How strange! I had the 6.0 V8 though and it sounded amazing got around 14mpg though 😂
Nice! I wish I had gotten the V8, I bet it was amazing.
My little transit connect fully loaded gets 23mpg. This is why I'm not sure about a larger van!
I own a 2019 3500 extended length in passenger configuration, this is the oldest new car you can buy. Two thoughts come to mind. The 6.0 (or now 6.6L!) is a huge improvement in power, and a no brainer when buying. Second is that an aftermarket stereo to add CarPlay took about 2 hours and $300. A new head unit makes a huge difference. I can put a motorcycle inside, my whole family, two dogs, and hang a dirt bike off the back and then proceed to drive 1000 miles over mountain ranges with no issue. It’s crude, antiquated, etc. but also phenomenal capability.
I have one 2004 she is almost 400 thousand miles and still running 🏃♂️ for more
Wowwww thats really impressive,is it the original motor and transmission??? Do you know how much weight it can hold inside???
I love the fact my 1999 Chevy express looks almost identical.
Any major problems with your 1999???
@@mercedesbenzs600bash it has 120,00 on it as of rn and nothing major to repair just classic 100,000 mile maintenance. Starter, plugs, distributor, battery, esc
@@jedswym6533 OK sounds good,I'm looking for an extended to transport freight, just want something reliable and durable...
To put in perspective how old this mode is, when the government mandated Stability Control they thought about discontinuing it because it was extremely difficult to engineer it to this.
Scotty Kilmer, who doesn't care much for GM products, recommends the Chevy Express Van overall, but doesn't recommend the 4.8 liter V8 version for reliability a concern on that specific engine. Thanks for the review and cargo measurement (hauling 2x12' lumber and 4x8' plywood sheets are apparently are no problem. Wow!)
These have problematic transmissions too. The design has been around forever, but they keep shuffling engines and transmissions around. The later year models have torque converters that go and they take the transmission out with them. $5k to $6k repair.
@@t3073-b4ido you know which years are recommended? Looking to find a 3500 cargo van for my dad
One of these with the 6.6 L8T engine would make for some excellent van life hot rodding
32K sticker price? That’s crazy but then again, they seem to last a really long time.
Have one at work with the Diesel engine. It’s went 640k and the motor has never been rebuilt and the injectors have never been replaced
@@Z0MB13L30N that’s awesome
Used to drive the V8, 15 passenger versions of these all over the desert when I was in the Army. These things can definitely take a beating for sure. Hopefully next time you’ll be able to get a pickup. The new body style Rams are awesome, and if they have a Tacoma or Ranger I’d take a look at those if you get the chance. I actually just bought a new truck from Enterprise Car Sales. 2019 Ram 1500 Classic! Glad you’re back to making videos!
I have to say this was a very informative video! You have detailed information such as all the settings in the center area such as MPG etc as well as the interior dimensions which is priceless!! Thank you for such a great video!!
The WT stands for Work Truck....I drove one in the 80s for my job...It can be moved easy by the wind and is prone to read sliding when empty...But I got used to it...etc...
i love these vans i own a 2008 gmc Savana ext 6.0 it has 380k on it with original tranny and runs like a top
Impressive,at how many miles was the motor replaced???
Many thanks for the review. I drove the van a couple of times and I couldn't tell where the hazards button was until I watched your video and thank goodness I didn't need to use it before. It's kinda hidden up there by the staring wheel.
If anyone was curious to know, FedEx Express uses these rental cargo and minivans as work trucks when we need more. My station has 11,12 minivans (grand caravans and pacifica/voyagers) and cargo vans (transit 2500s and ram van 1500s.) more than likely this truck is has done some FedEx work in its past lol, they don’t get treated very well either by drivers, and the minivans can get overloaded. Be wary when looking for used minivans especially, check if they’re prior rentals, cause if so, we and other logistics companies have rented them and beat the crap out of them for months
Glad you‘re back 💪🏻
Thanks!
i rented one when i moved as a uhaul. not sure what engine it had, but it was a V8 so it sounded so good! nice little break from my ford escape
Nice, these vans have been a part of my multiple jobs and they have served their purpose well!
Wow congrats on finding one and getting one. I hoped you didn’t get charged much because they go for like $75 a day usually but it’s still cheaper then a Uhaul Van. You need to rent a new Ford Transit van. You would like them.
I used points. It was a little less than 4 dollars for the entire day! And yes, I definitely want to try the Ford Transit. I haven't seen any by me. How about by you?
Yeah the Transit is a bit nicer inside, with more standard equipment, and more available amenities. But still, you DON'T get a V8 in the Transit!
Vincent D They did update it for 2020 so it’s even nicer
@@disneyfan9099 The interior is a tiny bit different, and the exterior did get a facelift. And there is at least 1 new engine. But the Transit IMO is the best in the full size van class.
Imagine being followed by a van like this while walking home at midnight. I know it's stereotypical but its true. This one is the crook's favourite
The classic movie van !
In fact, the body design is the same exact one from 1995! Only difference is that they of course changed the grille a bit in 2003 for 2004 and they ratcheted up the interior just a tad. This is also the direct replacement for the Chevy Van too.
The last time This Van was updated when I'll used to work at enterprise in September 2002 when i was younger.
Man I just couldn’t pay that much for a car that literally has the same radio as my 07 Pontiac G5. I drove a ford transit for Amazon and loved it. Drove like a normal car and had a modern interior. Nothing fancy similar to a fiesta but still not from 07. Not to mention decent gas mileage. I was flooring it from delivery to delivery and got about 9.8.
I agree. I don't need, nor do I want, a van like this to be super fancy inside. But still...I think the interior could be refreshed a little. And Bluetooth should be standard.
Just got one of these for work, I’m an a/c repairman, it’s exactly like the last 4 I have been given to drive. The back up camera is new to me, it’s actually very handy for getting a trailer hooked up, but after 16 years of driving without one it’s great not getting out to see how close you are to something behind you. lol It seams to ride a little bit smoother than the others I have had but that could be because I literally got out of my old one with 270,000 miles on it and into the new one overnight, so.
Any major problems over the years with your old one???
@@mercedesbenzs600bash no, not that I'm aware of. It's still in service with the company, driven by another service technician. Other vans with the company, of the same make, have had some issues with the transmission. But nothing major, just slight slipping.
I think that "grade braking" has something to do with those problems but that's purely speculation
@@picturemetrollin2093 Much appreciated my man...
@@mercedesbenzs600bash oh! BTW I saw your name and I own a 2010 Mercedes Benz C300 4matic.... Best car I have ever owned 250,000 miles and still runs like a dream.
Dude, do my home work.., have Gm fixed the defective paint peel off after a few years?
Steering wheel looks like a leftover from the previous gen Impala.
Ha! You may be right.
i use your youtube test drive videos as my white noise to help me sleep at night. also I am autistic. i like 15 passenger vans, and Airbus A321 aircraft as a hobby. i also like Yamaha stereo equipment.
I love this vehicle... gotta get the flex fuel version yall will save bucks.
Great Presentation
Does it have TOW HITCH at the back?
Hi the video is worth watching, thank you for making it, keep up the good work👍
Great video!
But I'm concerned if there is any difference between it and the GMC Savanah?
Only dif is GMC on the grill instead of the Chevy bowtie.
Just saw a 2020 on the lot, it’s just a wierd mash up of GM parts from the last 30 years and I like it! The wheel and dash are from mid 2000s, the doors and seats are from the 90s C/K era, the drive train is modern, it’s just so trippy! 👍
I drove one of these from uhaul for a bit while helping my friend move and it’s torquey
btw on gm vehicles u have to hold the panic button for 3 seconds for the real alarm to go off
Wow this is different!
All the Enterprise Express vans have the V6 and vinyl seats. Believe it or not I once drove a 2019 or 2020 lwb model from them that didn’t have cruise control so no steering wheel buttons! But every other swb and lwb model from Enterprise I drove had cruise control. Did yours have power mirrors? The downside to these is the mirrors are small and you have to aim them in just the right spot to see anything. The side windows in the side cargo doors like on the uhaul express vans helps with the blind spot issue unless you block them with cargo.
So beautiful buss
7400 lbs is around 3.3 tons, it’s quite low, here in europe, we are towing 3.5 tons legally with SUV-s like Mercedes ML350 and Touareg 3.0 TDI
These things have always been expensive, but yes they are very durable! This particular design has been updated over the years but last major overhaul was 1995. My friend bought a smaller version 1994 as a conversion van it was the previous version that was 20+ years old lol. He commented that it has the same door handles from when he was a kid in the 60’s! It was fun to drive though. Thank you for sharing!
@Carz N Stuff Ah ok yeah that’s true! That was a while ago haha
really GOOD review! Thank you!
Curious of your thoughts on the Ram Promaster cargo and how it compares. It’s a front wheel drive V6, and it’s terrible. But it’s worth a try.
I saw tons of these on the road on my trip last week from New Orleans to fort Myers beach fl than from fort myers to boca raton.
That sounds like an amazing drive. I don't think I've ever driven in that part of the country. How was it?
100 Rental Cars it was great and it was beautiful i even went to Memphis Tennessee while i was away I’ve driven that route before New Orleans to boca raton via i10 i75 and alligator alley and I even stopped at this place called micosukee service plaza on alligator alley which is on a Native American reservation on the route i took its got tons of reservations. i had a 2020 nissan rogue for this trip enterprise wanted to give me an infiniti q60 but i didn’t choose it because I think I’ll have a hard time getting in and out of it I’m over 6 foot
Just watched. What’s it like driving on the highway, can you set the cruise control to 75 and relax? What about parking if you go to hardware store? Can you fit in normal parking space or are you forced to park a 1/4 mile from store because you need the extra room? Thanks. Nice video.
I would say yes and yes
My issue with the Express is the blind spots. This why I really really like the Ford Transit. Problem with the Ford is the Windshield is very large, and where I live, cracked windshields are very common in the winter.
I drive the same van as this but i've got the 6.0 and it's fun to drive and powerful.
I have a small plumbing business. I am using a Ford transit connect (small) van. Wondering if I need a bigger van. Thanks for the video
100RentalCars, I do want to get one of these for living. Prerequisites: 2010-2020, 2500 or 3500, 6-liter gas 'L96' engine, 'G' as the eighth digit in the VIN, no AFM, no DOD, no direct injection. All of those are bad components for this engine, extended 155 inch wheel base, cruise control, maybe install a highroof onto it. Maybe a 4x4 conversion, would like a 'G80' auto-locking rear differential or an ARB brand 'Air Locker'. Add solar, LiFePo4 batteries, et cetera.
Fuel economy is not too bad, but it’s not too good either 15 miles an hour on the highway 13 in the city would I get from mine and I have the same size van
So what if there’s noise it’s a work truck what do you expect?
Yeah, I totally agree with you, it’s way overpriced
The only type of people that are buying these vans used are companies with large fleets and they usually get steep discounts on these.
Jonah True, but even then, at least here in Canada, I mainly see Ford Transits or Ram Promasters
I have a 2013 Chevrolet Express 3500 extended wheel base which is 155, 6.0 engine, with a 6 speed transmission.... IT'S A WORK HORSE!!! Knock on wood, this Van puts trucks to shame!!! My towing package up hill goes 85mph, but I have to follow the law at 55mph...But just giving you a piece of mind Of what this truck can do!!!
Thanks for the info! Do you know if the seats recline all the way down? Thanks!☮️❤️🕉️
About 250k then time for a new engine, I wonder if this has the same radiator trait they all exhibit after 100k
Do you know if GMC is about the same???
Now the only GM vehicle that isn't a pick up truck with Colum Shifter :(
Dreaming of a 3500 short wheelbase, V8, and to equip it with 4X4.
I'm with you on that pricing. All vehicles are over priced these days.
where did you took this video? it looks nice over there
Awesome video! I’m glad you got to rent this! I think it’s time for a redesign!😸😻😸
Thanks Ryan! 👍👍👍
Same exact design as 2004 but still very capable
Yep, they haven't changed it for years. It makes it feel extremely dated. But, getting replacement parts will be super easy.
Do you suppose they could make an RV out of this? Roomy enough?
Absolutely. I could easily lay down in the back. I think the only issue would be that it's way to short to stand up in.
@@100RentalCars They just need to add some sound insulation b4 they do anything else.
I am actually in the process of converting one now!
@@foote1967 Gonna raise the roof?
@@pedrofernandez8729 not at this time...maybe sometime down the road. This would be my first van build so it's all a learn as I go thing..lol. You can see the progress on instagram under my pdx. trailerguy name. 👍
How reliable are these ?
I took the 4.3 for a ride 100 MI.. at 60 MPH on the highway you get 25 Mi to the gallon. I know because I test drove one before I'm buying one.
That 4.3 might do okay when there is absolutely nothing but you in the van.. start throwing tools and equipment and materials in there and it's the biggest dog on the road. Very happy with my 6.6 L 401 hp L8T
Good info 👍🏾👍🏾
I don' think there are any adjustments for the seats - back angle, etc?
Yes, they adjust like normal seats. Back and forth and tilt backward as well. Nothing special.
Is GM going to release an electric version?
I don't know. GM did promise to be "all electric" by 2035 and I assume they won't stop making vans. At least I hope they don't. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
Can you do a vid on a enterprise box trucks? Or the bigger 3/4 ton they have?
Wow... I bet that it's A LOT different getting into one of these than your regular rental vehicles!!! We get A LOT of these (or the GMC Savana version) in at the Chevy dealership I work for (the used ones come from U-Haul when they sell their vans and trucks, and we have some Chevy Express 12 and 15-Passenger Vans from Avis/Budget when they sell their vehicles. We also get ex U-Haul Ford Transits, and I must say, the Transits are more well-equipped and more well put together than the GM vans (they have standard keyless entry and more lighting in the back, plus the sliding right side cargo door, which comes in handy, and the cloth on the Transit is less scratchy-feeling, and the door panels don't shake as much when you close them). BTW, all of these large cargo vans are RWD (aside from the RAM ProMaster, which is FWD), and the EPA does NOT require fuel economy ratings for 3/4-Ton and 1-Ton large trucks and large vans. I do like these though, and the Express and Savana are getting a 400-HP 6.6L V8 for 2021. :)
This is spot on
I just wonder which one has the most issues between the transit and the express? I thought about getting an express but all that noise in the cargo van is a turn off.
@@311hitwall the express and savana are pretty reliable. I haven't heard much about the Transit but I would believe its less reliable than the E Series it replaced. When a vehicle hasn't changed much in 25 years, there's no need to change it, because it just works. The Chevys and GMCs will be slightly cheaper, yet not as nice inside or as well equipped as the Transits are. The Transit is only slightly better than the Ram Promaster. Regarding the noise, any cargo van with nothing in the back will be similar. That's just a cargo van for you. That's just my 2 cents.
Does Chevy express have Bluetooth audio
Yes, but it doesn't come standard. It's a $50 additional option.
The Bang Bus loool
En qué lugar están estás banes
4.3 is slow dog. I'm getting a 2023 cargo van with a 6.6 l 400 small block with 401 horsepower and 465 lb of torque. Almost twice with that V6 is.
They're not required to report fuel economy on 3/4 ton and heavier trucks.
In fact Chevy dropped the 1500 in 2014 to get out of it because they can't make these meet CAFE standards. They replaced it with a little rebadged Nissan City Express.
It thinks you have a 301 mile fuel range; with 31 gallon tank at just over half that's maybe 17 gallons so it's telling you around 18 MPG. That sounds bad but the weight on this must be around 4500 lbs and it has all the aero of a slightly melted stick of butter.
Unless it's now standard, the power windows, locks and mirrors is, believe it or not, still another option package.
Vans with rear heat and A/C have a control up between the visors.
Little button at left of heater control is probably heated mirrors. My 2002 has that. 1996-2002 also have an actual glove box on the doghouse, the same place where the owner's manual is on this one.
Side doors have a check strap which can be pulled off to allow them to open wider.
As to price, these were $23,000 or so new in 2002.
What I don't care for on these is there are a lot of plastic parts and as they age they get brittle and break. A lot of pieces just snap into place, so if they aren't seated quite right they can cause rattles. They're just not quite as nice as the previous G-vans were.
6 CYLINFER GOOF DOR LIGHT LOADS-- IF U GOT WEIGHT GET THE 8 WHY STRESS A 6 THAT USES SORCERY TO GET THE POWER OF THE 8 WHILE NOT UNDER LIAD AND STRUGGLES UNDER LOAD?
I am shocked to learn that you were "shocked" that rear wheel drive vehicles are still made. What a sad commentary on competence.
Great
This is very different!
these vans haven't changed since 2003 was the last time it was face lifted, and in 2017 the sealed beamed headlights where replaced with more modern ones.
WT means work truck, by the way
You're kidding me? That's so obvious, I can't believe I didn't catch that. Thanks for point it out!
I have to agree with you, when I need to rent one of these I always find them oddly enjoyable to drive. They used to have big V8 engines, surprised it has a 4.3. Pretty sure the van itself dates back to 1997 but it does what it needs to do!
The V8 is optional
They totally need to redesign with an update grille fascia such as the Silverado and go European style w/ standard features as an LS model on a Malibu. I’m surprised that they haven’t considered the market shaping up to RV lifestyles.
I totally agree on pricing its ridiculous
👍
You didn’t even know they made RWD cars anymore?
Sounds like bobby to me almost. You know Patrick Duffy.
