Joel, the quality of this content really has gone up immensely over the past year. People take it for granted I know. But there are some of us who understand how difficult it must have been to launch yourself into space like this, let alone operate a camera in zero g. We truly appreciate it. You must have spent years preparing for this role, I mean I'm left wondering how long it took you to evolve the ability of breathing in the vacuum of space? The average viewer just does not realize the kind of effort it takes to make these videos, but know that there are some of us who really appreciate the work you put in. Keep it up man

Yes, why is it only those dreams we find in childhood which are wholesome? Why can't we find new dreams and passions as adults? Why can't we be more in love with something we discovered at 37 as someone who "found" their dream at 15? We aren't being disingenuous for pursuing that and letting older dreams go. We can evolve and change and that is a beautiful thing about being human.

I have no friends now. I never took the time to MAKE time for them, a failing that haunts me still. Too many times I felt obligated to make time for my friends, all the while still wishing for time for myself.
Now all I have is time for myself, and I miss my friends dearly. It's strange, how life takes and changes one. I wish that the person that I had been then had the knowledge and wisdom that have been gained so painfully from the person that I am now. If it makes you feel, most people lose contact after high school. You didn’t reach out to them, but they didn’t reach out to you. There’s a rare few who will stay in close contact. Basically, without being literally forced together, that happens. You’ll still make friends, but it will never quite be like high school where you had a group. But you’ll also developer relationships closer and deeper than you’d ever think with the friends you will make now.

But you're right. All the astrophicisit is to the other guy is a gimmick that stoped been gimmicky. Imposing his own fears and unfulfilled dreams on innocent guy who just try to be a good narrator, while knowing better everything and never listing back. The past can be a source of good memories, but shouldn't be defining factor for the future self. The sad part is that this "friendly presence" shaken his world view. Hopefully, only for a moment.

This has actually happened to me. For me it was the way I used to play trumpet. I had very happily put it down and love what I do, but an old high school friend was so insistent that I shouldn’t have given up “my” dream. They were would not accept any narrative other than I was miserable and needed to try getting back into it. Genuinely made me doubt myself for a couple of hours. Then I said fuck them and haven’t thought of it again since.

For some reason I thought this was just gonna be a bit about him narrating everything his friend was doing in a grand and existential way, which does sound funny, but instead it was this very personal little breakdown of a possibly sad narrator and that's why I love this channel

In the UK we have a science documentary guy called Brian Cox who used to be keyboardist in a commercially successful pop band. I'm guessing Joel doesn't know this as I don't think Cox is known outside the UK, but it is a bizarre case of art imitating life.

I was at work a few months ago and this guy I went to middle school with happened to stop by with his friends. We weren't close or anything back in the day, but he recognized me, and his reaction was something like "Hey! Good to see you! How's life?" And I said everything was alright and he said "Hey man, don't worry about this job, you'll find something better alright? You're better than this place, you'll find something!" as he walked away.
He said it in front of my coworkers, and I just thought Jesus Christ this guy has no self awareness whatsoever. That was so incredibly rude and condescending, whether he has the capacity to understand it or not. I liked that job and I liked that workplace, I never thought it was "beneath" me to be there, but I do remember that particular kid was definitely born into a wealthy family, and I immediately recognized it as a tone-deaf, classist micro-aggression from a dude who would be ashamed to do what I did, but wasn't smart enough to realize that to working class people, having a working class job isn't shameful.
As soon as he was gone I turned to my coworkers and told them I wasn't "too good" to be working there and that I was proud to work alongside them. The dude wasn't trying to be an asshole, he thought he was being encouraging, so at best, he's a clueless rich asshole with good intentions who accidentally revealed that he looked down on me and my coworkers as a member of a higher economic class that can't relate to working class people whatsoever.
Sorry, that was long, but this video totally reminded me of that. Maybe Carl Sagan here does love being in space documentaries, but having some outsider loudly tell him that he looks unfulfilled and unhappy and that he should've taken his life in another direction must be pretty upsetting and honestly infuriating.

Sounds to me like you're stagnating in your comfort zone, and he knew you weren't living up to your potential. By the time you're 20, most people have roughly 2600 weeks left to live (until age 71), give or take a few hundred. How many more weeks are you going to spend in that job?

    • @ItsAsparageese
      @ItsAsparageese Год назад +4

@@gooel Sounds to me like you're focusing on creating narratives about others to fit criticisms you desire to make, as a means of avoiding actual introspection about whatever traits in yourself your values aren't in harmony with. By the time you're 30, most people have at least kind of figured out that this is a normal human propensity and started working on their issues instead of projecting. How many weeks do you plan to continue borrowing others' lives to be interested in, in lieu of getting your own?

    • @ItsAsparageese

This is great stuff OP. I'm glad you shared it. People really need to learn that presumptuousness is pretty much always a bad idea, and good intentions don't negate the harmful insulting implications that can arise, even when the speaker is presuming things they _think_ can only be gracious to presume.
You reminded me of a similar story from my life. When I was growing up, my mom and I got our hair cut by this great hairdresser for a long while (she became a family friend) and she owned her own great little shop leased inside a big nice hotel. She passionately loved the work and was a truly gifted artist in her medium. She was thrilled to make people feel amazing about themselves every day, and had a saturated clientele of happy regulars, so she never really had to put up with significant bs from anyone.
But for some reason, she did regularly get hotel guests and other non-regulars rotating through who would ask her what she was working towards next/what she wanted to do for a "real" career. Man that's so messed up. I hadn't thought about that story directly in ages, but it's always been a powerful influence on me. From what she told my mom, she'd generally just tell people she's happy and loves her work and it treats her great, and I'm sure sometimes people learned from that, but I suppose many also probably just didn't get it.
I really admire the dignity with which you reacted to that guy's statement and how immediately you cleared up any weirdness in the air for your coworkers. The way you interpreted and responded to that whole situation is just very honorable and sincere. So often, I find my peers and I in the working-class-and-poorer spheres get surprised by certain naive and/or shameful attitudes we see in some wealthier people, to the point of being embarrassed for them and even sorry for them. Or, as my family like to say in one of our many cliches-with-a-twist lol ... "I wept because I had no shoes -- until I met a man who had no class!"

I saw the upload dates and thought perhaps the stuff where Nick was acting and doing sound/music was from a bygone era, that there may have been a burned bridge or someone had moved on in some way. As a musician who loves psychedelia, I relate with nartharie and I'm just glad to see that these two are still working together, or at least that Joel is still releasing content featuring Nick.
