    for those that might be having the same problem i had - not being able to read the capacity at the end of cycles except the last cycle - i found the trick! on the screen after the cycle stops, there are two buttons at the bottom. the button on the bottom left is 'ESC', to go out to next higher menu. the one on the bottom right is 'Graph' to show you a (pretty useless) graph. between the two buttons is the word 'CYCLE' (if you're cycling as H-EV Tech describes). the trick is that if you click on the word 'CYCLE', you get a screen with the data from the cycles. it doesn't look like a button, but it acts like a button. the data from the cycles shows max charging mAhr and discharging mAhr for each cycle.

    Thanks for the info man, about to rebuild my battery off my 3rd Gen 2012 Prius. Been noticing that the MPG has been tanking sharply especially over the last 3 months. Had done cleaning on my cooling fan 2 months ago though I am yet to deep clean those nasty bus bars which I doubt have ever been cleaned since the vehicle rolled off the factory floor. Maybe this will help though I am looking forward to also balancing the modules to get a true picture of the true life expectancy of the battery. Loving your content from Nairobi- KENYA

    8:35, instead of stripping an audio wire or using solder, another option is to get a section of common electric wire used in home 110V networks. There are 3 solid copper wires in each of those wirings, and it is very easy to strip one with a utility knife. Or just cut a wire long enough to use the exposed ground wire inside w/o strip any black or white lines.

    i followed the process H-EV Tech outlined in this 3 part video series and it worked for me. my prius had 240k miles on it and i got the red triangle of death. i had the p0A80 error code. that was back in late june. it took about a month of elapsed time to get it back on the road using the process outlined in these videos (i only bought one tenergy unit). the car has been back on the road now since early august and it's doing ok. mileage had dropped to less than 35 mpg before the red triangle; now it's back up to 40 (after a reset). i had many modules that had low capacity. i ended up shooting for 4000mAhr as the 'bar' to get above. i replaced two modules and just reconditioned the other 26. i would cycle until i got above 4000 and i would punt if 5 cycles didn't get above 4000. some were much better, e.g. 5000, but many ended up just a little bit above 4000. i don't know how long the whole thing will last - we'll see. i did the step where you bring them all to the same voltage by tying them all together in parallel. i used romex 12ga wire for that, happened to have some in the basement. i also followed the balancing step (where you pair modules to get similar capacity for each pair of two modules).
    thanks H-EV Tech! my prius would be toast without your videos!

    • @johngreene1308
      @johngreene1308 Год назад +3

      @@cory5233 the car had about 240k on it when i reconditioned. now it has about 250k. just recently (last month), my daughter drove it to LA (about 400 miles) and it got the red triangle on the way! she kept going and it made it. then the red triangle went away, and she drove it back (!). red triangle is still gone. i ran diags and it shows a couple of weak cells, not ones i replaced last time (two codes, one for the cells out of spec and one P0A080). so i guess the upshot is, if you start with an old battery, some of those cells won't last too long. when i did the refurb, i used 4000mAhr as the threshold - if cells had more than 4000, i considered them 'good'. (some were above 4500, but some were not). the group that is too low now is group 14, nearest the driver's side of the car. last time it was a different group.

    Pairing a module with the highest capacity with a module with the lowest capacity is NOT a good approach. I tried this, and experienced both overheating of the pack and also got the triangle. I paired the modules based on capacity, and the paired pack is lasting for more than a year. I have tried several strategies, but I have found the following works the best. I charge an individual module up to 8.26 volts @ 3 amps. I then discharge the module using a single headlight (which is about 2.5 amps), and I track how many minutes and seconds it takes to get down to 7.0 volts. I have found this is a good range to test.

    great video - thanks very much, H-EV Tech!
    i just started trying to recondition my HV prius battery. it's a 2006 with 240,000 miles on it and i got the triangle of death. i'm not sure yet how many modules i'll have to replace (only one had failing open circuit voltage, but others may have bad capacity; we'll see). i'm following the method you outline - really appreciate your detailed explanation!
    i'm not sure i'm following the method you used correctly. i set up the t180 as you described, with charge and discharge currents 5A each. but often the discharge current the display shows is more like 2 or 2.5A. am i doing something wrong, or does the t180 vary the discharge current for some reason? (i'm using kind of cheap alligator clips to connect to the module and there is ~1v of loss in the clip wires - will that confuse the t180 and cause it to use less discharge current?). i originally setup to do 3 cycles at a time (3T), but when the 3 cycles were over, i couldn't find any way to read the discharge capacity after the first or second cycle - there was no data anywhere i could find. is there a trick or a special menu to read out the discharge capacity of each cycle?

    Thanks for this informative video. It was extremely helpful to give me the courage to work on our vehicle myself. I received the red triangle just days after buying our 2004 Prius. When I opened the cover, I discovered that 5 of the modules are smaller. All modules test 7.99-8.01, even the smaller ones. I assume that the problem is the 5 irregular-sized modules. I plan to replace those 5. Does that sound like a good solution?

    Hello. I recently replaced 2 cells in a bad block. (one of the cells had actually blown). The Dr prius app recognized it as block #9 was bad. It was kicking the red triangle and throwing the transmission into limp mode.
    Because I was short on time I simply replaced the 2 in the bad block. The car no longer goes into limp mode.
    Now it says block 8 unbalanced and still gives the red triangle, but does not disable anything like before.
    Would looping like you mention here and running the cycles help balance out the pack until I can more extensively recondition each cell?

    Thanks a lot for the great video! It is informative and somehow very entertaining! I enjoyed watching it!
    I have one question: After cycling, you ended up with each module being discharged am I correct? (because it's a Charge/Discharge Cycle)... Did you then completely charge the whole thing when in parallel? Or did you charge each module individually to their final capacity and then go for one more charge in parallel at 1A for a couple of hours? Thanks in advance for the engagement

    Q: when you hooked up all the modules in parallel (plus to plus, neg to neg) - the last step before reassembly - why did you trickle charge at 1A?
    I ask because I've read others who simply let the pack sit 24 hours in this 'parallel' state, and found the pack adjusted each module to be the same. (This step assumes that the modules have been reconditioned and charged to within .05v of each other first...)

    • @HEVTech1
      @HEVTech1  3 года назад +2

      Trickle charge was more to increase the voltage for each module so when I put it back in the car its around 65%. Letting it sit for a while is the most important part.

      Was looking for the same answer. He responded to this question, buried in the comments.
      "I didn't use the T180 to "balance" the pack as the solder wire I used accomplished the balancing by itself. I "trickle charged" the entire pack with the same settings as an individual module minus the current limit which I set to 1a or around 7-8 watts. The solder balanced all of the modules which is a step that cannot be skipped or will lead to issues when installing the battery. You certainly do not need to do the trickle charging step if all of your modules are showing 7.4v+, I only did it as I was wanting all module voltages to be 7.6v before installing in the car." --H-EV Tech

    How long did the typical 5X cycling take with the Tenergy T180? I had a Gen 2 which had battery failures 3 times (200K, 224K, then 330K). Between the 224K & 330K the battery was balanced and cycled by someone else, which made a huge difference. I now have a Gen 3 at 200K and planning to prepare a spare this spring. I just assumed I can do 1 cell per day over 1 month. BTW, I am located in KC area (Overland Park) if you ever wanted to get really nerdy, would be cool to meet up.

    • @HEVTech1
      @HEVTech1  3 года назад +6

      Are you seeing any issues with your current battery that make you want to prepare a spare battery? NiMh has a self-discharge rate of about 10%/month. If it were me, I would store all the cells in parallel and trickle charge them until you decide to end up using the spare, then all your cells are balanced and ready to go.
      I would certainly not be opposed and would be happy to loan you my T180 so it takes less than a full month lol :)

    • @jafinch78
      @jafinch78 Год назад

      @@HEVTech1 That makes sense. Never thought of that for the storage long term when not installed in an actively used prius. I own a gen3 and gen2 now as well... though debating investing in another gen2 pack for some cells since I see one block is consistently low per Dr. Prius app and another block does drop rather lower at times.

    All of your videos are great. I have a question for you? About how long would it take to rebalance every module, including six new modules. I'm sure you don't know exact, but could you give me a rough estimate so I know if I should take off some time from work

    • @HEVTech1
      @HEVTech1  3 года назад +5

      This ultimately depends on how many and what kind of charger/discharger you have along with how long you want to cycle charge each module (I read 3-5x is generally acceptable). I had 2 Tenergy T180s and to cycle charge 3x it took about 7-9 hours per module. I had it timed out so I could get about 4 modules done per day for a total of 7-10 days with the replacement modules. I didn’t take any time off work but I also had a second car I could use for commuting.
      If I had to do it over again, I would probably have gotten a 3rd charger knowing I will eventually use it as I own two 2010s :)

    Just did some cycles on modules using the T180, however I have set the discharge end voltage to 6v, but when the 3 cycles complete and I’m scrolling through the results, I’m seeing discharge capacities of 2400mah and a voltage of 7.6v, with slight variations for the other cycles.
    Shouldn’t the voltage be 6v, since that’s what I set it to cut off at? What would cause the module to prematurely stop the discharge cycle before it reaches the 6v cut off?
