    A huge thank you to Fiona, Richard and Hamish for donating the much needed winches for our stabiliser wing winch upgrade! We get into redesigning the brackets on the wheelhouse roof, find out our antifoul is failing and this cyclone season has completely changed our travel plans.
    Thank you for all your support!

    Mill scale is an unwanted result of hot rolled steel. Steel without mill scale is cold rolled.
    If you watch vids on YT of any preformed slab of hot steel being hammer forged/rolled/stamped/bent/shaped/etc you can actually see it form on the surface, particularly when it is being bent.

    Nice to have winches done.
    Marine ply with a nice coating can improve areas on your boat. Men's sheds usually have all the equipment to cut sheets accurately. Sometimes stainless is the expensive solution.
    Always great to see another project & presentation on BRUPEG.

    You DON’T have to use the small edge of your grinding wheel for full Peña traction. You can use the flat side to angle grind the metal for welding.

    Vinegar is great at removing mill scale, it weathers the steel in a 2 days

    Winches almost done, just need to thread the dyneme ropes and they will be good to go. What are you planning to use for anti fowling? What is the best anti fowling for the boat, I have seen so many different options, how do you choose?
    The explanation of the prep of the metal for painting was super interesting, I did now know that the flat wheel was not a good option to prepare the surface for painting.

    Mill scale isn’t deliberately added to the steel at the factory, it’s a natural oxide process of manufacturing and isn’t desirable in any form, protection or otherwise. Soak the thing for 48 hours in Bunnings vinegar and the mill scale wipes away…

    Mill scale is a flaky layer of iron oxide that forms on steel during the hot rolling process

      So it's rust preventive function is just a happy coincidence?

    If you have time, for smaller parts you can soak mill scale steel in vinegar or muriatic acid and simply wipe the scale away with scotch brite pads.

    Really nice to see you exploring other welding techniques again. Mig easier than tig on a boat. Stick my go to in windy times. Try branching out.

    No Jess you cant have a bigger boat! just yet. 🤣
    Can you imagine Damo over engineering on the big research vessel. (in a pink dress shirt)
    Some great donations now you can do flappy birds. 2x👍

    Those winches may come in handy in a grounding.

    One issue I have with the boat for years is the sliding back doors during rough seas the sliding doors will blow in flooding the boat ASAP. Just something to wrap your head around maybe. Unless you could cover them with storm doors then you’ll be fine. There are four latitudes where Roge waves is not anything to underestimate. Antarctic fall and spring storms are nothing to be cute too.

    Is the anemometer broke or was that it just spinning at the right speed so it looks like it's standing still?

      Broke. Yard dust sized the bearing

    How is the fishing off the back of the boat ?

    • @ProjectBrupeg
      @ProjectBrupeg  9 часов назад

      Wouldn’t know. None of us fish or even eat fish. Plenty of little fish we can see from the back on account of the copious growth under the boat

    I may be behind the 8 ball, but why don’t you use hydraulics for the wings ?

    • @ProjectBrupeg
      @ProjectBrupeg  17 часов назад

      Cost to do it is huge compared to electric. We have a massive battery and power system and a tiny hydraulic pump so a major upgrade would be needed or just use the electric system we have
