a small box trailer would be better for you I think. A 6x12 foot with 7 foot ceiling needs no yearly cost like a truck but haul just as much as a truck plus you can use it as a billboard lol and you don't feel to bad when it sites doing nothing..
Thanks Wally. I'm not interested in a trailer. They become too much of a hassle getting into tight spots etc
Good point , less expense , no insurance , one time registration in most states .
Hi Joe - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. How about the 4th R that applies to all businesses, particularly firewood - Recreation, which in addition to providing some rest gives you the time and space to think outside the box.
Joe, if you went to 10 retail stores to talk about bundles, 9 have no recollection you were even there a day later. Retail is a busy job, no time ever. As you know. Go back, and go back again in a month. You will get all these stores. Sell yourself not the wood. It looks good and it's dry, end of wood discussion for most retailers. It's about you, and these guys appreciate persistence, because they are persistent people.
My two cents, it will happen for you. People like you.
I think you are spot on Vince. I still find it hard to go back for a second shot LOL. I need to hire a sales person LOL
Think about a enclosed trailer that could be used for storage qnd deliver and advertising. Just an idea
I agree but I don't want to deal with a trailer
Thank you Joe for the behind the scenes look into your sales efforts! Definitely encouraging
Thanks buddy
In Indiana (Franklin) I saw a convenience store selling bundles (.75 cubic foot they claimed) for 8.99$ USD, that is north of 1500 dollars a cord!!!!!!!
That is the glory of bundles. The consumer wants the convenience and is willing to pay for it
Hi Joe, almost all pallets will fit between your wheel wells on your trk. I have no doubt you will be persistent and will get more sales. Did you tell them you’re the employee of the month???
I should have brought that up. That has a lot of street cred showing off my award
look into used beverage trucks.... they have load and unload access from the sides.
Prob too big and too much fuel for me! lol
Joe another thing to do is wood chips at these new places
That is always on my list of things to push. LOL. Thanks bob
A flatbed trailer and tarps for the pallets will be easier to load and unload and the trailer is cheaper.
I don't want to deal w a trailer Jim
Part of not just giving up is following up with the companies you haven't heard back from, and even following up with the companies that initially said no.
That will prob happen eventually lol
Recovering Landlord... 😂🤣😂 I feel your pain Joe, glad to be out of that game. Another great video, I love the fact that you are not afraid to provide assistance to all of us who could, in turn, become your competition down the road. It is what I like to call the champion's mentality and it is an admirable perspective. Competition is not something to fear, it is something to embrace. Respect... 👊
Glad you enjoyed FPF!
Wrapping those pallets is a dizzying venture 🤪
haha. I bet it is. Need a younger person to do it for me
Small enclosed trailer is all you need Joe. As for pallets and shrink wrap, try the cardboard bins, the ones you see watermelons in in the grocery store.
Whether I’m watching you on RUclips or listening to y’all’s podcast, I’m learning from you.
Thanks for what you’ve taught me and others!! 🤝
Enjoyed it!!
Joe look at it this way you are branching out it all adds up great video congratulations
thanks for being along for the ride Bob!
Hi Joe! Another great vid….motivational and scenic! 👍
Thanks Dave. Mosquito lake is a super nice place
Sometimes it’s better to grow slow. That way you stay in control of delivering a top notch product. How about a flatbed truck with a small crane?
Another great video and words of wisdom from Ohio Wood Burner. Much respect to you Joe cheers my friend 👌🏻🔥🇨🇦
Can't be selling mushroom wood! Haha. I don't even sell it to myself LOL...i.e., use it in my maple syrup evaporator.
You asked where we are from. While you are at the 2nd largest lake in Ohio, we are 20 minutes from the largest lake in Ohio. Grand lake at St Mary’s/Celina Ohio.
FYI those U-Haul trucks will not match dock height. If your customers have loading docs you might want to consider a different box truck.
Joe, late to the video but had a thought. If this bundle business takes off, maybe a shipping container set up, for product flow of bundles. Wood would be dry, maybe in a IBC cage that could be forked into the container, pallet jack to move it inside the container to and from the door, wrapper all set up for bundle production, and a supply of bundled wood ready. Just a thought and quick note taking. 👍🏻
I thought the three R's were for Rain, Rain, Repeat.
haha That is about right these days Kevin!
You could use some poly banding materials to cheaply band the bundles to the pallet. Thanks for sharing your inexperience - sorry, experience!
Great video with great lessons. Figuring it out along the way, then the day comes when you realize your plan worked out perfectly even though you didn't have that plan in mind! See you soon!
Good video. Our area isn’t all that big for bundled wood. But I can see it coming with cost rising on everything. I’ve tried it years ago but I can see that it’s coming. Smaller amounts are more affordable to some on a tight budget. Thanks again!
Presentation and reputation is everything , I'm in a similar retail business , Mower repair and sales . You need to gain trust , Attention to detail is a must , For instance I pressure wash and clean every mower before it is returned to a customer . I like Your approach .
Dam good video...Thanks for sharing your experiences with getting into retail, Joe. Lots of great info!
Thanks for watching Wayne!
You can get the customers eventually, call them occasionally and one day someone new might answer the phone that isn't deterred by trying someone new. Took me years to get the best venues and then to get my product to the best sales vantage point where everyone seems to remember that they need it
(Eye candy). Never give up....
Nice video, thanks again for sharing your thought processes. Nice blue skies and pics of Mosquito Lake and dam too. Elaine from Canada here, just got a 3 inch dump of wet, heavy snow! Yikes. (But we need any moisture we can get) When you mentioned the three R’s, in Ohio I thought it stood for rain, rain, rain! But I think I’ll credit you Joe when I think of my ABC’s. Now it’ll stand for, “Action is Better than Complaining!” Good thoughts, wise words and great video Joe. Cheers.
haha I think you are right. It tends to rain a lot around here !!
Hi Joe, I can completely relate. When I started my professional land surveying business, I made cold call after cold call, visited businesses in the area in a suit and tie, and I picked up one, maybe two new clients after several months of work. I had a mentor who helped me meet others in the profession and business started to pickup, but it was a struggle. Your video today is my exact experience. The key to finding new clients is to be persistent and never give up! You are an awesome mentor for those new to business. Keep up the great work!
Thanks Jason. I just try to keep moving forward
About 47 years ago my father in law went to Mexico and got a bunch of stuff to open a little store just south of Tulsa. He went to our new wal-mart and they took some pots from him to sell. After a few times they come up with a deal that if you want to sell to Walmart you have to have enough to sell to all the stores so that just cut the little guy out
Some of the big box stores will deal with local producers but that is their business model. I avoid them
I vote a cargo van or an enclosed trailer, also you could get another shipping container and then get the hoop building that you can put on the top of them. Take care
On the container comments separate them and span a roof between them for more dry space 👍👍✌️✌️
Yes Joe you are so Right on positive thinking of going after some new Bundle Wood Accounts. I am going ahead with mine in the Front yard of selling a little for now and may in time check out some stores in the near future to Supply Bundled Firewood. As I see it and you are so Right seek and you shall make out some way or another. Good news I am coming along fine just have to heal a little more. I can now do 1hour a Day every Day and rest in between. So today I am going to Cut some Rounds up and Prepare for my Venture Foreword of Selling a little. First to get my Bundler, etc. Love the Lake And Dam area. Where I live we have the Watervliet Reservoir. It is a Great Area to visit. Keep up your very GREAT VIDEOS MY FRIEND. RON FROM THE WOODYARD IN DUANESBURG NY.
Thanks Ron it is nice to hear from you. Good luck w your bundles buddy
Joe I like your positive approach ,it takes a while to build a good business.if you buy a box truck be sure. It is vented . I have seen wood which appears dry mold in the heat and humidity inside a van body. Keep up the fine vids they are great.
Good to know Jack. Thanks for the heads up
LOOKK AT A USED INCLOSED TRAILER with 8 or 9 thousand pound axel's, you can makeandstore your retail and it is ready to deliver at a phone call.
Thanks Bill. I don't want a trailer.
Ammmmmmmazing video. thank you. You are describing resilience. Not everyone has it. - the log hog
Thanks for the nice comment Log Hog!
The guy that does the most bundles around me he has a carport outside his garage door.
Right off the processor, he cuts logs, and they go into a dump trailer. No matter the weather, he can make bundles out of the rain
That would be nice. I'm assuming the wood is dry enough to burn?
@ohiowoodburner : Yes, they are. He leta fir (your equivalent to pine) logs lit a year, and after they are split a few weeks later, they are ready to burn..
I visit that business twice a week or more. Glad you got your product in there!!!! Really good establishment!
Thanks buddy. It really is a nice store. Long term presence in the town too
Joe look 👀 over your shoulder see that water from mosquito 🦟 lake , if you want to make $$$$$$$$$$$$ put 10:34 hydro water turbine on it . Electric will be around until this world 🌎 come to the end . Firewood 🪵 is pennies hydro is buck joe . 😊
haha I know Len. That is a lot of potential energy going to waste
Great lesson and thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us.
Thanks for watching RDB
Nice video 📹
When you get rejected, do you ask the retailer when you should check in again? This way you're not pestering, but you still get face time.
haha. No. I just move on.
2 new customers is better than a kick in the arse buddy. My business go to trick is always being ready to go. Have 100 bundles always ready, always! You have a 40 foot container in the yard, easy to keep a few bundles ready.
Good point Adam. Thanks
Joe, still feel like a tall cap on the pickup is the way to go until you outgrow it. Lowest investment cost until volume requires more. I am a belt and suspenders kind of guy (posted this before you said that you were holding back on the box truck purchase.)
I like the idea of the tall cap. I think i would need one that would remove quickly or a second truck...
Hey Joe I appreciate your transparency on your venture into retail. I have found many of the things that you share very useful and I have put them into practice in my business. Sometimes even the obvious is good to hear from someone else. Looking forward to meeting you next month. Let me know if you have a hotel list together for the event.
Thanks
Jeff
Thanks Jeff. I will put one out but any of the four hotels at the Eastwood Mall Complex in Niles are good.
What you are up against Joe, as you have probably already figured out is competition. Every convenience store and grocery store already is selling bundles. You have to crack that market and it's not easy.
I disagree Gary. The places I am going after have not been sellling packaged firewood. There are some other producers in my area but they aren't in the same market as me
You did get two. Work to keep them and more will follow. Keep a good stock stacked ready for an influx. Another rule:= be ready.
Good point Brian. I have been busy making a small stash for reorders
Get a kiln or 2 and than grow faster than your thinking. I wont even do bundles anymore.. too much money in other markets.. but your starting to backtrack your business..
Kilns confuse me. I don't think I could ever afford one
I'm thinking an enclosed trailer might be a better fit than the hassle of a bigger commercial truck at this point, which could be hauled by either of your trucks. Plus would help with storage solution.
Possible but I dont want to deal with a trailer rn
Hi Joe, Another great video, with great information on selling firewood. That was a great short video on the eclipse sunglasses 👍loved it
haha. Thanks for watching!
Here in northeast Kansas I saw a Mahoning Valley Ohio license plate the other day. My first thought was “they have good firewood available there.”
haha. That is awesome to hear. There is a Mahoning County so that is prob what you saw. The Valley covers a three county area but I only deliver in Trumbull and Mahoning. Great place!
Joe, buy a Honda odyssey and take out the center seats. No commercial registration and doors open on both sides. Good reliable dry delivery.
i like the creative thinking Derek
Hi Joe, great video. You could use your dump trailer to deliver pallet loads of bundles, especially if they have a forklift to offload. I have found multiple resources for free pallets. I use my utility trailer (5X10) to deliver bundles. I can fit two pallets (20 to 25 bundles per pallet) on the trailer. It works great. You already have the solution, your dump trailer. Good luck.
No trailers. I don't want the hassle
Get another storage container. Keep bundles on skids. And keep your bundles in there also.
That may actually happen. I need to look into that
Just wait for the word of mouth advertising happen between mom and pop shops.
I think the odds are good. We shall see Harold
How do I get in contact with that lady who can design me some labels for my bundles?
pekodesigns.com/firewood-supplier/
Thanks Joe!
You will likely discover that once you have established yourself in the retail business, those that previously said no will call you for supply.
That is possible. most business from the same segment will talk among themselves
@@ohiowoodburner There's also the exposure you will receive from being in those first two stores. You should see a bump in sales/enquiries.
Entrepreneurs take note and listen to Big Joe! He is the real deal and has a great business model!
Thanks for the nice comment Kyle
Nice work Joe!
I enjoyed listening to your thoughts on sales of bundled firewood. You certainly are a positive person with a winning attitude. Not blaming others for the”no thanks” responses will definitely lead you to success with your new product line.
I am a recently retired sales executive that found success for being honest with current and potential customers. I once called on a potential customer for three years before they gave me a chance so just keep knocking on those doors. My sales at the beginning were $30,000 per month, and at my retirement were $5,000,000 per month.
You sound like a wise business person with a strong manufacturing and sales background. Good luck with all you product lines.
Thanks for the nice comment Ken. Honestly I don't have a professional sales background but rather more non-traditional. I have noticed that i am pretty good at it. Still I'm not super aggressive but that have more to do with my age lol
No answer could also mean something else..
1 talked to wrong person.
2 too much on their mind when you talked to them.
3. They are simply not interested...
Untill you hear "not interested" keep on top of them and always have a sample on hand..
I agree with you. If I have a hired sales person on my payroll that is what I would expect for them to do to make a sale. For me, it is very difficult to push.
@@ohiowoodburner yeah I'm the same here...
"Inovation is seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought." - Dr. Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Because you are an innovator I have little doubt that you'll be fine in whatever capacity you choose to do business in. Clearly the mindset is always there to make it happen. You already are ahead of many others just in how you have run your business for several years. Plus, you can't win them all. I feel it's just as much their loss is what it is yours for those who say no. Glad this one business said yes. Word of mouth never will go out of style and always will be free.
P.S -I hope you and your family end up fine after this storm. I'm thinking of you guys was I watch it.
Thanks Cody! We made it thru the storm pretty good. The tornado hit Windham which is on the far west side of our county. Looks like some houses damaged and some semis turned over on the Turnpike
@@ohiowoodburner Glad it turned out fine. My general area was fine also..some damage in Williams County and around Bucyrus area to my east. I seen that warning go up near Warren and Cortland and knew it was real close. Crazy that Ohio leads the nation in Tornado's right now..
I want to know more about you being a land lord pls.
It is a private relationship.
I think you are very good business minded
Thanks Curt. I just keep moving forward
So proud of your thoughts of completing your business ideas. 5 steps are used perfectly. Retired now and enjoy watching you grow. Greeting. Sample. Commitment. Invitation to buy. Closing. Prayers continue.

Pur the pallets in your dump trailer
no trailers. don't want to use them
What do you think about a heavy duty cargo van preferably with the side barn door option another thought was a four by eight slide unit for a pickup in witch case would work with some type of truck bed topper either option would transport two pallets stacked and wrapped bundles
Not sure. I like the box truck idea plus I could put an office in the back of it!
@@ohiowoodburner much more bang for one's buck with a box truck
You can always get a 53 foot or shorter trailer a one time expense for your bundle making and storage having a box truck is not a bad idea at all
Thanks Lander. I thought of another container but we shall see
@@ohiowoodburner that would work way better
You're no hobbyists.
haha!! Thanks Dave
I really like this video.
Thanks Mr T. I'm glad to have you stop by

Thanks for the nice comment Stan
As a 59 year old caterer, just now getting into the firewood business, I appreciate your wisdom and sharing your experiences. See you at the expo👍
A kiln may be in your future. And a tonneau cover.
Kilns are an enigma to me. The don't seem to make sense for a small producer like me
@@ohiowoodburner Maybe just more cover for your wood stacks. Only if wet wrapped wood becomes an issue.
Hey Joe, regarding your bundling and rain - I find that keeping a cord of bundle wood covered is the best way to deal with this. If I need to bundle and it's wet I load the dry (covered) wood into truck and back it into my shop where I bundle and store it until delivery. I only sell about 60 bundles a month so I just make sure during rainy season that the next cord for bundles is covered.
Nice vid. Just getting into Retail myself. Lots of good info inhave been thinking about. Take care Joe.
Thanks Woodster!
Joe, I have come to realize you’re a go getter. Your drive will make you successful. What would happen if you took one of your cement cribs & narrowed it up, put a smaller roof similar to your JAPA roof or quanset type roof. You could put your bundle wood business in there. Scoop up your dry fire wood & pile it undercover & make dry bundles of firewood out of the elements @ your convenience. Keep us posted on your progress. Have a great day.👍 Dave D. from Southern Maine.
Thanks Dave. I had discussed that with the owner but I also thought abut another container. Just not sure yet.
Possibly get an enclosed trailer to keep your bundles dry. Like a 6x12. Not as much overhead to start off.
Thanks for sharing your experiences. I'm a bit older but any younger person will get some great business advice from your videos. From eastern Pa.
Thanks for the nice comment.
My thinking and going on the premise of best bang for your buck, my opinion is maybe an additional F150 truck with a camper shell on the back. Adding another small economical vehicle could allow for multiple vehicles to be loaded the day before for bulk or bundle delivery so you could just hop in the second truck to streamline deliveries. This also leaves room for growth a couple years down the road. Just my two cents.
Possible. I like the smaller trucks and a cap makes a lot of sense. Trucks are just super pricey these days LOL
Have you considered using a small enclosed trailer for delivering your bundles? In PA truck registration is now over 200 a year plus you have another vehicle to maintain.
No trailers. I don't want to deal with them
Ah Joe you slipped up there, he was paying more for the other bundles. Next time ask your potential customer what they are paying....remember there's no money around
haha. Despite that I am good with the $$
You need a dry spot to store bundle grade/size wood whether it's stacked in a shelter or in IBC totes in a larger building or storage container. I sell my wood in 55 gallon food grade barrels with removable lids. The wood HAS to be dry (seasoned and not wet from rain or snow) or it will mold when the lid is sealed. I have a 10'x16' wood shed that I stack wood in and I fill IBC totes and store up to 10 of them in my shop. The wood is always dry and ready to go when I need to fill barrels. Dave
Thanks for sharing Dave. Sounds like you are moving a lot of wood
Time for another shipping container to store all your bundle wood.
i think you are right about that BW
You have a start with two it's something to grow on and I am sure that the orders will come you have all the equipment to do the job and enthusiasm I say good luck to you
Thanks brendan!
Hey Joe, instead of a box truck, find a F250/350 pickup and buy a tall cap for it. They make them with a full door on the back that also opens wide enough for a pallet. This would give you some redundancy for your other delivery vehicle at the same time. And, you could store bundles in it and basically deliver out of your “warehouse”. It would also dry your bundles (sitting inside the truck in the sun between deliveries.)
That could work but my other truck is also my POV. I don't think I would want a large cap on the back of it all the time lol.
@@ohiowoodburner no, add another vehicle to your business fleet like with the box truck, just a smaller more versatile one. If one were in for service you could still do your normal deliveries (tailgate delivery or dump trailer delivery) with the other.
How about another shipping container to keep bundled firewood in?
That may happen. Stay tuned Greg
@ohiowoodburner I will. Could put it beside the other with space in between and put a roof over space to split and bundle firewood underneath. Keep up the awesome content! From a fellow wet north central ohio
Biggest thing it would seem you need is a covered area to store the bundles , and also to make the bundles ? Just my 2 cents.
Thnx…
I think that is going to be part of the process eventually. My growth in this area will dictate that
Not criticizing by any means.
Seems like almost a necessity to even get your foot in the door ?
Gotta have a product to sell 🤷🏼♂️
It looks like a good problem to have. What do you think of an enclosed, vented, lockable/secured carport with a roll-up garage door big enough to parially back the future box truck in. You could store a few IBC's of ready to burn wood. It wouldn't need to be large, as you would only need it in wet weather. I'm sure you have a plan. Good vid!
I think a second container could work but I'm not feeling like spending any$$ right now LOL
@ohiowoodburner lLOL! I knew the money thing was coming and I can't say I blame you

I don't know if you have what I would call a flat tray ute in Ohio, but I've seen them here with curtain sides. Still usable for towing your trailers for the restaurants, but also good for pallet loads for this kind of delivery. And, the forks on the tractor can load them over the side... Anyhoo, good luck, I'm sure you'll figure it out. 😊👍🪓🇦🇺
thanks Tassie but I don't want to deal with a trailer
