Instead of playing a trumpet with mute, most music compositions and performances would benefit from a subtler and more refined cornet sound. Fantastic instrument.

Is the cornet a closer relative to the flugelhorn or trumpet?

To the flugelhorn, because both the flugelhorn and the cornet have a conical bore.

neither, funnily enough. the cornet is in fact a small horn that was squished into a more lengtened shape and fitted with valves. It is a relative to the French Horn, both have a (nearly) continuously slightly conical bore.

I would like it if you’d play the same piece of music on each one; I was trying to show my partner some of the differences in timbre, and that would have been a more helpful comparison for her. She just learned about the cornet from it’s recent use in an IconoPop performance and she is terrifically interested in learning more.
Thank you so much for the demonstration! While I do wish it had been a more comparable music piece, I still am able to appreciate orchestral talent, and you’ve got it in spades.

Good job explaining the difference. I am not a musician. However, there is a song I love right now called Paradise by Ikson, and I was wondering what brass instrument this piece is using. From your description it seems it is the trumpet.

en términos de presión requerida, o esfuerzo al soplar, ¿cual instrumento diría usted que es más difícil o exigente? ¿cual es más fácil o menos exigente, más cooperativo, amigable, menos demandante de esfuerzo? (In terms of pressure required, or blowing effort, which instrument would you say is more difficult or demanding? Which is easier or less demanding, more cooperative, friendly, less demanding of effort?)

If you can play one, can you play the other pretty easily?

      Simple answer: Yes!
Longer answer: Yes, but they do have different characteristics so it takes some more practice to be fluent on both :)
