@@LeftBehind666 you are retired at age 25? You already have enough money to last you for the next 65 years? Regardless, you invest a portion of your income while you are working so that the money can grow and eventually exceed how much you put into it. Then when you retire, you can stop working and sell your investments to live off of. So no, you don’t generally invest more money in retirement since you have no income. You are doing the opposite and selling investments. Hopefully your investment portfolio is large enough that you can sell about 4% each year. Doing this you will be unlikely to run out of money.

Thank you Dave Ramsey
Yo, nice video! I know you're probably already doing this but make sure you're measuring out your tax deductions end of year. compare itemized with the standard (good chance your local taxes can get taken off on itemized). might be an extra few grand a year
Young fella…old man here also in software development for appx 25 years. That 3.5k you have left over, pls save at least 2k a month. Our industry is volatile and you will want that nice savings in times of leanness or when you get older and either want to start a family, and/or start a business. Try to save at least 100k+ and invest in some in solid stocks and index ETFs. Not fly by night long shots. And last thing, Make sure that you invest in your company’s 401(k) plan. If you don’t do anything else but invest up to the companies match, please do that that’s free money.
So glad i found your channel bro. Second semester in man, really trying to make it in this business. Keep doing what you're doing bro, def an inspiration!
There's no job security and then you have AI automation which is why so many companies are laying off their employees. Lose the expensive apartment, Tesla, eating out, and other activities. That will save you at least $30K a year.
I'm 5 years experience SENIOR software engineer making about 100k USD. My country is so damn underpaid. My friends go overseas and make double-triple. I need to move soon :(
I'm admittidly underpaid for my position. I have 3 years experience as a software engineer making $85k. Basically I'm still working at that first company I got a job at, haven't job hopped and I work from home from a medium cost of living place. But I"m still pretty underpaid. My manager and I have been fighting for a raise for a long time now but that ball is moving extremely slowly. The primary reason I don't apply for new jobs right now is because I'm finishing up my degree. But once that is over, I'm going to take a month break, then it's the leetcode grind!
Hey dude, honestly get out of there and move on as fast as you can to a new job. I was being underpaid similarly (3 YOE) but I wasn't working in a city and got to work full time remote for ~2 years so there was some positives. Was trying to leave in the last year anyways but the job market was (and still kinda is) trash. I fully recommend trying to apply now and at least get the voice out. The worst thing to do is stay loyal to a company (no matter how nice they project themselves to be) especially when they underpay you and make excuses not to raise your salary.
Also don't worry too much. Most of the highest paying jobs in the US are in cities with the highest cost of living (NYC, San Fran, Seattle). After tax and living expenses, they aren't being paid that absurd of an amount as you think.
It matters where you live. A large salary doesn't matter for instance if you live in Hawaii. If you live in a south state, you can live so well on 60k+. If you live in places like Cali, 60k is barely surviving.
I came here trying to get a grasp of what to expect working as software engineer, ended up getting some useful advice for when I move out from my parents. Thanks for the transparency man. Found it really helpful.

I noticed that you don't have any investments in your budget. You should really get on that! At your age, time is on your side. Compound interest would make you an easy millionaire by retirement. The best thing you can do for yourself is start contributing to a target date index fund in your 401k. The longer you wait, the more money you will have to save.
Based on the few comments that I've seen I know your not intentionally doing this, but I believe it would be helpful to break down what your paying down into your pre-tax stuff, as it makes a difference between what your actual take home pay is as well as how much your putting down into your retirement. For example, for me I make around 120k, 5% goes into 401k right now, with the rest going to insurance funds. My total pre tax is 532, with 233 going into my 401k 116 going into an HSA account, with my takehome being around 2875, and after paying rent and bills, being 1860 which goes to food or whatever else. This next year I'm deciding that I want to increase my 401k contributions since now I have enough of a cushion to be comfortable doing that with to get the maximum that I can get, which I've calculated for my income to be 18% of what I currently make, which makes it around 841. I've also reduced my insurance for my medical to be roughly now 78 dollars instead of the 178 that I was paying before, so my pre-tax now is around 1048.65, for medical, dental, and contributions to my HSA. So, to me at least for retirement and medical funds 841 now would go to my 401k, and 125 dollars goes to my HSA account, while before it being 223 dollars to my 401k and 116 to my HSA. You would think I would lose around 600 dollars to my actual take home pay, but thats not what happens. I only lose 350 dollars, because the tax event happens AFTER you send money to your pre-tax expenses, so I'm taxed after spending the 1041 dollars. So I would now bring 2500 as my take home pay, and after bills and rent goes to 1507 to everything else. So right now the money that will be going to me starting next year would be going to me would be 3841 biweekly, with a pretax income biweekly of 4673.96 I think it's good to mention stuff like this, as until recently I didn't really have a good understanding of tax advantages that I could've been taking advantage of when I was making a lower income bracket while still saving for retirement or medical expenses, as well as give a good picture of how much you really save once you reach a certain threshold for your expenses.
I literally just started learning how to code today and bro, you just gave me MAD motivation 😁. I could support myself and my wife with money like that EASILY!
Man US is another beast. I work for around $43.000 with the same experience, I am based in a Balkan country. And this is above average here for such experience. I'm a DevOps engineer with Bachelors and Masters degree in Telecommunications and Computer Science.
I'm currently self teaching w/ in-depth tutorials about python to start getting into software engineering and my friend never really went into depth about much besides his salary being 100k with the company he's been at for a bit. So this gives me a really great perspective on expenses with salary rather than a basic 9-5 retail job with hourly wages (iykyk). This kind of gives me hope for next year if I apply myself consistently to be financially more stable than what I am currently :)

As a self taught programmer with only a GED, what would you advise as resume projects (I like to focus on Backend although I know a bit of frontend), or just tips in general, to attempt to stand out? Are there any must-get certificates that I can work on while the job market is doodoo? I want to get *anything*. even a crap job, to get my foot in the door a few years before getting a more reputable company. I live in a rural craphole in the midwest right now so I can't really network at events, though I've seen some good tips like attempt to connect with hiring managers on LinkedIn when applying to attempt to get the interview. Are things like that a good idea still? Thanks and sorry for the long comment, your videos are frankly inspiring :)

Software engineering looks difficult. I'm looking into this career path because I'm looking for a career change from working in the medical field for 18 years. I'm broke and have nothing to show for all my years of working in this field. I'm looking for a change. I'm just worried about all the negative videos I've seen on YT. I want to at least give it a try and deal with the headaches myself. I know that every job has its moments but in the medical field I just feel burnt out. Plus I would love to move back to NY and roommate with my brother.

Hey I’ve got some really great news to share with you, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died on a cross and resurrected on the third day so you may all have eternal life. If you believe and repent of your sins and put your faith and trust in Him as you would a parachute jumping off a plane at 25000 feet up in the air, He will give you eternal life in heaven as a free gift and I promise you, He will change your life forever as He did mine. He is the ONLY way to heaven and He loves you all. Please think deeply about this with urgency because this is your eternal life and soul, you don’t know when you could die, meaning you could die at any moment, so please consider this with all your heart. If anyone tells you that Jesus isn’t the only way, they are lying to you and they don’t care about your future.
I just got a bump to 160k this next cycle but I take lots of unpaid time off so I’m going to assume 145-150k. If you expense things through an LLC you can get in a lower tax bracket while also expensing a side hustle. Keep up the grind!

Are you a contractor expensing through an LLC?
Im 46 and going to school for software engineering... and I'm in a hands on C# course.
You are giving me some much inspiration even as a young person. My son's are 19 and they work in tech. I hope they will see your same success ❤❤
Best of luck!
What's the course name? I'm looking for a course to learn programming as well.
@amburfork1838 your comment inspired me. 35 and wondering if it’s too late for me. How I’m going to do it and everything. So thanks for that comment. I hope you’re doing amazing now!
Very respectable person and video! I am a Electrical Engineer in the DC / NOVA area and seeing someone at my age making the same money and not making the astronomical "300k+" engineer salary that job jumps every year or two for more pay is great to see. I enjoy your videos and stay loyal to that company!
Nice video man. I just graduated with my comp sci degree in May, and am not paid as well as you, even given the location, but I am truly blessed with my position, but I live in the midwest and have more money than I know how to spend... Our field just compensates extremely well if we play our cards right. New sub!
Make sure you're investing in your 401k! You admitted to having more money than you know what to do with, so put that money to work for you! At your age, the compound interest will make you an easy millionaire by retirement.
@@strictlyforcommentsWhat about if you're already retired? I'm 25.
@@LeftBehind666 I don’t understand your question.
@@strictlyforcomments What if I already am retired, what's the point of investing/saving?
@@LeftBehind666 you are retired at age 25? You already have enough money to last you for the next 65 years?
Regardless, you invest a portion of your income while you are working so that the money can grow and eventually exceed how much you put into it. Then when you retire, you can stop working and sell your investments to live off of.
So no, you don’t generally invest more money in retirement since you have no income. You are doing the opposite and selling investments. Hopefully your investment portfolio is large enough that you can sell about 4% each year. Doing this you will be unlikely to run out of money.
This gives me motivation to pursue cyber security. Taking the free ISC2 course now and getting certified; then going for my Sec+. I'm taking EC Council courses, and a IT course; I hope to live as comfortably as you, but I'll stick to my 2006 Toyota Corolla CE lol. Thank you for the video, new subscriber.

I'm subscribing for the transparency you brought up. I don't know why people are so scared to show specific numbers when jt comes to Financials. I'm not the IRS 😂 but i'm young at 24.
you're so real for being transparent w/ your salary + expenses! i rarely ever do that bc in this field it can feel like a big "measuring" contest but it's great education for those who want to either get in the field or elevate in it. awesome quality vids and it's fire seeing another Black person thriving in SWE tech!

Down to my last year, currently working as a Jira Administrator making 55k in western NY. The struggle is real but once I secure this bachelor degree I'm hoping to be in a similar position as development/engineering is what I really want to do.
You got it without a bachelors?

@@HiDeff09 oh wow congratulations thanks great! I am going to attempt the same!
Appreciate the transparency g. More blessings to you for many years to come.
Trying to land my first software role. Wish me luck, its rough out here

Sending money to your mom! God Bless you brother!
I respect your transparancy. Fellow New Yorker here. You've just gained a sub.
You’re blessed! Keep up the great work! I aspire to be in this position soon.
Not a software engineer but im a Salesforce Admin just got a new gig about 7 months ago. Making $110k. Just hit the 2 year experience Mark.
I would say you also need to consider investing some of your savings in good index fund ETFs (SPY, VOO, VTI, SCHD, QQQ, etc.)
He lives off only his base salary and still saves 1k a month from it. He completely pockets his equity portion. He makes 240 TC and saves ~85k a year after tax. He says he's living it up, but he is far closer to frugal than extravagant. Every year he can buy an entire tesla + fly first class + spend a week at maldives but saves it instead.
cant really call that frugal. rich is more like it
I wish I didn't hate coding...
Why do you though? If I may ask.
cause it's awful, noboy should sit all ay in front of a computer solving something abstract in computer coing laguange
I LIVE IN A 3RD WORLD COUNTRY, I WORK With 2 businesses in the US, i get payed 4000 usd a month net. I pay no taxes no fees, my mortgage and expenses are 500 a month. I can save and invest 3500 k a month. How in the world can I save and invest 3500 a month from a 3rd world country working in sales, my english is not even that good and I am 25 years old. Thank you Dave Ramsey
Yo, nice video! I know you're probably already doing this but make sure you're measuring out your tax deductions end of year. compare itemized with the standard (good chance your local taxes can get taken off on itemized). might be an extra few grand a year
Yeah I hired a tax professional after I started this job, because TurboTax just doesn't cut it if you don't know what you're doing lol
@@doseofdevydid you find this tax professional from a known company? May I ask where you found this person? 🙌

Keep doing what you're doing bro, def an inspiration!
hope u make it
There's no job security and then you have AI automation which is why so many companies are laying off their employees. Lose the expensive apartment, Tesla, eating out, and other activities. That will save you at least $30K a year.
Spoken like someone whos not a softare engineer. AI not replacing us anytime soon.
@@isaack7457not all of you, but some for sure.
Thanks for such a detailed transparency. Wish you all the best.
I'm 5 years experience SENIOR software engineer making about 100k USD. My country is so damn underpaid. My friends go overseas and make double-triple. I need to move soon :(
What's sad is I'm paid well within the country (4x the average for my age). IDK how people survive on the average salary.
Yeah you definitely gotta move!
Loved this video alot man! Those NYC taxes are insane though..
Thanks man! And yes they are lmaoo
This channel will blow up. Enjoy the ride.
Even though you're underpaid, that's still more than I've made in my entire software engineer career. Keep at it!

Creative cloud for $6 is crazy! My student rate was like $25
That’s a Typo!! It was supposed to be $59.99
I noticed that you don't have any investments in your budget.
So right now the money that will be going to me starting next year would be going to me would be 3841 biweekly, with a pretax income biweekly of 4673.96
I think it's good to mention stuff like this, as until recently I didn't really have a good understanding of tax advantages that I could've been taking advantage of when I was making a lower income bracket while still saving for retirement or medical expenses, as well as give a good picture of how much you really save once you reach a certain threshold for your expenses.
Bro's transparency is what inspires us to graduate, great content man

I'm currently self teaching w/ in-depth tutorials about python to start getting into software engineering and my friend never really went into depth about much besides his salary being 100k with the company he's been at for a bit. So this gives me a really great perspective on expenses with salary rather than a basic 9-5 retail job with hourly wages (iykyk). This kind of gives me hope for next year if I apply myself consistently to be financially more stable than what I am currently :)

you make £102,000 a year and in england on average a software engineer gets £58,000 a year. Thats insane

As a self taught programmer with only a GED, what would you advise as resume projects (I like to focus on Backend although I know a bit of frontend), or just tips in general, to attempt to stand out? Are there any must-get certificates that I can work on while the job market is doodoo? I live in a rural craphole in the midwest right now so I can't really network at events, though I've seen some good tips like attempt to connect with hiring managers on LinkedIn when applying to attempt to get the interview. Are things like that a good idea still?

Software engineering looks difficult. I'm looking into this career path because I'm looking for a career change from working in the medical field for 18 years. I'm broke and have nothing to show for all my years of working in this field. I'm looking for a change. I'm just worried about all the negative videos I've seen on YT. I want to at least give it a try and deal with the headaches myself. I know that every job has its moments but in the medical field I just feel burnt out. Plus I would love to move back to NY and roommate with my brother.
