he jus don't know no better. plus he's a jewler for christ sake!! but your point is valid though. seiko is one of the most respected watch brands in the world full stop. to suggest anything less is just absolutely foolish
Usually I am one to defend Hodinkee with their change in content as of lately. But this one was hard to watch. No clear direction to the video with very little substance to be said about each timepiece.
Your comment is perfect. They spent mere seconds on any particular piece, maybe as far as to comment on what colour it is before endeavouring on another career story. Quite an unimpressive video.
"What makes it respectable?" "I've seen billionaires with this thing, so I'm like, ok..." Has to be, far and away, the most abominable exchange ever to go down on Talking Watches.
Very hard to watch, too much ego for my taste. Everything was linked to how he can flex. No thank you, please bring back content with those that are interested in the mechanical fascination rather than status!
You have an opportunity to make a 2nd episode with Roni M or an episode with James Martin (chef) or Mike Wood (old watch shop / Rolex collector) but you choose this guy 🤦🏻♂️😂
Seikos history is insane and just as good as Rolexes history, they are true pioneers, Grand Seiko and up are quite beasts. But, 47th street is a different world. To each his own personally would never buy a watch from that district :-0
Ok so this is obviously going down in history as one of the worst talking watches episodes. But what do you guys think are the best ones? I know it's hard to choose but lets try. My personal favorite has to be the Daniel Dae Kim episode.
This could have been somewhat interesting if they had talked about quality vs factory setting, purity of the stones, etc. I would assume most aftermarket stones are worthless and the setting is a hackjob since the public for it wouldn't know better
I’m pretty sure I met this guy at a party before. That said, some people are as interesting as they are in a 20 minute video as they are in a 30 second interaction.
6:20 "it's not like a Seiko or movado it's a sexy beater. I've seen billionaires in this thing and you know what, I can do that". Oh boy. I think he needs to figure out what he wants to be. On one hand he doesn't wanna take himself too seriously on the other hand he wants to collect timepieces that make him appear to be a collector...
Hodinkee can ride their name recognition for a bit, but they will fall apart with this content. Not the designers fault, but this is just not interesting to the core demo.
Lots of people talking out the side ... just hating. Greg is one of the most creative, nicest, most humble jewelers and humans I've ever met. He's elevated the status of what it means to be a jeweler and how to hustle, and represent New York. Thats why he's in the same conversations as Ronny Feig, Floyd Mayweather and Adam Sandler and had his own sneaker and a billboard in Times Square while people just have negativity to contribute to the world in the form of YT comments. Not everything has to be oriented as technical drivel and self aggrandizing like other Talking Watches eps.
I dont think there is anything wrong with this content but it doesn't feel Hodinkee...it feels more like GQ/ Producer Micheal or something. But I go to GQ for GQ content, not Hodinkee.... I feel like Hodinkee was always supposed to be about appreciating the subtle beauty, kinda seeing the diamonds on the inside, it was almost the anti-bust down platform 🙄
As much as I hate aftermarket crap, I didn't hate this as much as I expected. Not everyone that owns watches has to be a purist, and a man that knows it's crap, but has it because he just likes the look, is fine in my books. At least he's not out there claiming it's worth who knows what because he's drilled holes all over it and filled them with cheap stones.
I thought this was a great video. While I am a “true enthusiast” and love the technical , design, and historical perspective of horology, we cannot ignore that there is a purely fashion component to our hobby as well. Timepieces also have a significant cultural component and what’s more modernly cultural than 47th Street and busted out watches? This was said several times in the video, but it bears repeating - “it’s just fun”.
To me, New York City jewelers are part and parcel with watch culture. Every enthusiast must have their place in the sun, even if it's busss dowwwnn. No one batting eyelashes when manufacturers do oem gem setting. I am personally excited to see THIS type of diversity AND be as excited to see an enthusiast of vintage seiko divers for example.
Yeah lets face it, its not John Mayer collector level. But, that doesn't matter at all!!! He and his story is still very interesting and I really like to see different characters and people here. At the end, we can still all have the same love for watches, it's not exclusive!
I love this episode! Lots of humour and not taking things too seriously. Really refreshing. I also love Malaika's attitude of teasing Greg and asking "divisive" questions. Greg comes across as a great guy. People who are criticising this video, please calm down. Watch culture is not just about Rolex, Seiko and vintage Patek. This is also an aspect of watch culture.
Agreed! I've met Greg on multiple occasions and dude's energy is dope AF. He's also a huge influence in our culture. Some people take watches way too serious. Watches are subjective and everyone is allowed to enjoy them in whatever way they wish. Busdown or not. Thank you Hodinkee for being inclusive!!!!
Busting down the pretentious side of collecting. Props for keeping it fun. You do you. A real collector knows what he likes and could give a shit about what anyone else thinks.
Nothing wrong with this video. A slight change from what we're used to. But the reality is not everyone is the same. Everyone complaining needs to wake up a bit.
I have to admit it, I went into this video with a huge amount of scepticism, with all the bust downs etc. But Greg is so relaxed and comfortable with everything...open, funny, knows his shit. I love his point of view on bust downs, and you know what, he is 100% right. So, more fool on me really...loved this video, one of my favourite Talking Watches so far. ❤
Initially, not my thing, but after watching this entire ep... Its cool! Get around a different type of watch collecting, its not all about John Mayer/Goldberger collecting, theres other ways to do things
Appreciate that this represents the other aspect of watches jewelry and customization. In his defense, he did admit that he killed the Patek in retrospect…I see potential, lol!
To call a 10k+ watch a beater and put down Seiko in the same sentence just isn’t it - regardless of net worth and brand preference.
he jus don't know no better. plus he's a jewler for christ sake!! but your point is valid though. seiko is one of the most respected watch brands in the world full stop. to suggest anything less is just absolutely foolish
A Talking Watches filled with aftermarket Bust Downs and safe queen investment watches that will never be worn? Sign me up!
Exactly.
Usually I am one to defend Hodinkee with their change in content as of lately. But this one was hard to watch. No clear direction to the video with very little substance to be said about each timepiece.

I’m just here for the comments
Me too... I watched about 3 mins of this and decided more value was to be found in these comments than in the content. Come on Hodinkee!!!!
This felt like a sales puff piece for this new store
Disclaimer: it is
That's exactly what this is.
No more personal stories, just the obscenely rich touting their most expensive pieces.
relax loser...
Obscenely rich? Seemed like a dude that has just worked his way up in the industry? Or am I missing something?
@@xu10j4rs1You are missing something!
Don’t be jealous of others’ wealth. Having said this, this episode was dogshite

Ok I’ll bite… Seiko isn’t a respectable watch brand? Arguably one of the most important brands in the history of watchmaking.
Nothing to see here 😢
Non-watch people, talking to watch people. Maybe I’m not the target audience anymore bc to me, this ain’t it. At all.
My thoughts exactly
You have an opportunity to make a 2nd episode with Roni M or an episode with James Martin (chef) or Mike Wood (old watch shop / Rolex collector) but you choose this guy 🤦🏻♂️😂
Not my cup of tea.
Agreed.
Seikos history is insane and just as good as Rolexes history, they are true pioneers, Grand Seiko and up are quite beasts. But, 47th street is a different world. To each his own personally would never buy a watch from that district :-0
NYC has so many of these clueless, tasteless, people desperately trying to follow trends. BTW the gem setting on the first Patek is terribly uneven.
I think the term for this is "rage bate"
I was expecting ostentatious, and I was not disappointed. Amusing that he foresaw the general Hodinkee crowd's reaction.
This collection really lends itself to getting roasted, but I'm going to save my words here. To each their own.
In defence of Hodinkee, it's character-building to be exposed to things like this now and again. Certainly made me appreciate my Seiko's all the more.
New series name: “Talking, and some watches.”
Another rich nobody that says that Seiko is not a respectable watch brand…….dude, Seiko has more heritage than Rolex 😅
Ok so this is obviously going down in history as one of the worst talking watches episodes. But what do you guys think are the best ones?
I know it's hard to choose but lets try. My personal favorite has to be the Daniel Dae Kim episode.
Moki Martin and the Tudor that was damaged in Vietnam and restored. Any John Mayer episode.
Moki Martin and Brad Farmerie
The Howie Kendrick episode was good. And of course the two with John Mayer. The first with Goldberger was also good
I dislike the guy almost as much as the hideous watches. “Art” is an interesting choice of word.
Putting down Seiko. And i’m done. Don’t want to see the rest. No thank you.
This could have been somewhat interesting if they had talked about quality vs factory setting, purity of the stones, etc. I would assume most aftermarket stones are worthless and the setting is a hackjob since the public for it wouldn't know better
nice green day date but it's quite obvious this man doesn't have a vast knowledge of horology or watches ; More of a jeweler type
Oof, couldn’t get through this episode. Boring and tasteless.
I’m pretty sure I met this guy at a party before. That said, some people are as interesting as they are in a 20 minute video as they are in a 30 second interaction.
tiFfaNy sTaMpeD!
Cool story bro
To be supposedly coming from humble beginnings, then proceeding to diss Seiko... terrible and shame on you.
This doesn't match the quality of former Hodinkee videos.
It’s been a long time since that
Another Talking Watches with Rolex, AP & PP 🥱
I can’t watch this .
6:20 "it's not like a Seiko or movado it's a sexy beater. I've seen billionaires in this thing and you know what, I can do that". Oh boy. I think he needs to figure out what he wants to be. Yikes. This guy is pure cringe.
What a waste of time I couldn’t even get halfway through…
Comparing Seiko to Movado, ouch!!!
I have never been called a poor with such subtlety before.

This ain't it
Rolex gmt a beater? It hurts...
Love Hokinkee, but this is so cringe.
Tone deaf, boring and stilted.
Each to their own and credit to Greg for understanding the audience but I just have no interest in these type of watches.
When you have done what Seiko and Movado had achieved then you can speak…
At least he knew the deal from his first sentence…!
As Yoda might say: "Tarnation, what in"
Others have commented "to each their own". Yes, just not for me.
Very refreshing!!
I understand their place in the market..... but not really my cup of tea
A Tiffany stamp will increase the value of a Patek by over $300.
As much as I hate aftermarket crap, I didn't hate this as much as I expected. This one was definitly sponsored by american dollar 😂
No.
None of these pieces make you appreciate his process of selecting watches
Not my style, but props to GY for knowing who he is.
Whole lotta "style", naff all substance.... And do we still need to plug the overpriced kith heuer collab?
I see this man outside often , always wearing a nice watch. Always , any and every where downtown !!!
why not?
I lasted 5 minutes and 8 seconds because of Malaika’s smile she’s an absolute sweetheart, almost unfollowed Hodinkee tbh. This is not it.
I LOVE both of those stone dial daydates

This was dope to me ! We do t need to romanticize every watch or collection
Despite all the comments, I respect this. We know John Mayer and others have set the bar very high but this show is called Talking Watches everyone
make something interesting like old Hodinkee

Holy cow I might be the first one who's a real person... look no emojis isn't that weird? Hi folks
There is this side of enthusiasm, I don't like it, but I enjoyed watching this especially being free entertainment.
Nothing wrong with this video. A slight change from what we're used to. But the reality is not everyone is the same. Everyone complaining needs to wake up a bit.
I like it
I liked this video a lot. Hodinkee was getting kind of goofy with nerds who like watches, not watch nerds. Keep it in a cool lane please.
Tasteless
This has been interesting to watch. Thanks for that.
You could write these comments before watching the video, change the record...seems a decent dude, love MC as always.

Why the unnecessary hate comments? You guys need to grow up
Bad works

Entertaining and interesting, great interviewer, I enjoyed this episode.
Not for me🥱
GOAT, Greg is real! All the way up!
Initially, not my thing, but after watching this entire ep... Its cool! Get around a different type of watch collecting, its not all about John Mayer/Goldberger collecting, theres other ways to do things
Watch collecting is individual... don't like it? Move on. You couldn't afford these pieces anyway.
Can't buy taste
@@flo12325 taste is subjective. your collection probably looks like every other dufus. All wearing the same stuff like idiots
Money doesn't buy class
Afford and desire are two different things.
Truely wealthy people do not feel the need to show out like this.
Interesting perspective - watch collecting from all angles, why not? Embrace the change sometimes

We need more videos with Malaika! Her series in Paris is my favourite piece of journalism in the watch industry!! Fashion X Watches
