Owned one and ran the Porsche Club "Club Sport register" for many years. Used to track / monitor all but 3 of the 53 UK cars and many of the ROW types. I loved mine, had 10 years with it and having driven all sorts of super and hyper cars, only want for one car now. My car was featured in so many magazines and I was always proud to display. Agricultural, noisy and rough - but the driving was excellent. Soooo much feel from the steering. Mine was without underseal and had it hand mapped for 98 octane fuel. Pulled like a bloody train. Sure..not like a GT3RS or Tbo, but the feel was outstanding
Harry, my dad and I just watched this - he heard engine note and asked me to play this from the start! Talk about dewy eyed! He had a Carrera sport (coupe with the big wing, and sport buckets 1988 model, just early g50 box. You highlighted so many of the things he loved about the car, how you could place it on the road, the engine note, the quirky switches, etc. The only car he ever hankered after, had it for 20 years from 1994 to 2014, sale due to moving to a house without a garage. Thanks for making him relive so many happy memories - he just loved how much fun you were having!
I remember Road & Track featuring this car back in 1987 and 1988. They seemed to be pretty impressed with it. It had everything you needed and nothing you didn't. Modern cars have become so needlessly complicated and overly engineered that a car like this today would be a huge blessing.
Market dictates that sadly. Hopefully it will come full circle and we will start getting more driver oriented cars. Mazda said they were developing an naturally aspirated inline 6 and keeping manual gearboxes as options. BMW too, and both have released cars recently that are lighter than their previous iterations, so all is not lost!
My old friend Jim Palmer (rip) had a club sport. I will never forget those laps at donington with me as a passenger and the many laps at Croft, cadwell where we would chase each other around on track days. The CS was a faithful companion for Jim and they went on many European adventures together visiting spa and Nurburgring among others. Great car, great bloke. Because of Jim, the CS has a special place on my heart❤️
Just recently got myself a 3.2 carrera, had a 912 before that,I feel its a real privilege to own and living in wales we have the roads to do it justice, great video keep em coming 👍👍👍
Harry, my dear Man! Your video has been online for about 10 mins. People are raving about it, you and this amazing creation! I´ve had a horrible day, even a bird shat on me. I saw the notification of your video. Pressed play. 2 mins later, I was cheering, goosebumps over this purist of an 911. For me, this is a perfect car. The purity and honesty of the car, crude and who cares. And that ENGINE!! This is a perfect "get happy after a shite day" car. Thank you Harry for the video, for sharing your knowledge, enthusiasm and your bad ass driving!
Right? I was going to make a comment about modern cars and how their track focused models with all the deleted features (like... door handles, looking at you Porche) actually cost you MORE. In fairness those models usually have more carbon fibre for weight savings, but still!
As an avid collector of automobiles in particular books, magazines etc.. I'd love to see a video of your magazine/book collection assuming it would be quite vast. A "Harry's library" of sorts
What a great video! My first 911 was an 87 3.2 Carrera, and it’s wonderful now to hear that engine howl again. I also had an RS America which is similar to the Club Sport: stripped for weight reduction, and with the manual steering rack borrowed from the 930. That was the best steering I’ve experienced. Thanks for the fun blast from the past! Oh, and Derek Bell drove my ‘87 around Willow Springs. That was an eye opener!
Hey man!! While we are on the subject of nice cars !! Check out this video of ours !! How do you think we did??😀😀 ruclips.net/video/Q7H6T2FWPZA/видео.html
I know, as Martin Brundle would say, a day late and a dollar short - but I got here in the end. Fantastic review that highlights everything about the CS that I truly value, so I totally agree Harry, with your synopsis. I'll fess up to being biased as I'm lucky enough to have owned one of these cars for many years - only a very light weight version with 127K miles (across Europe and around a few tracks!)
Your expression of 'this is the purest 911 drive experience available' is a great statement from you with all your experience in cars. So by making a standard 3.2 a bit lighter I can make it even more enjoyable to drive. Thanks for your opinion !
My dream cars always have similar characteristics. Hardtop, no sunroof, stripped-out sport-oriented model, cloth seats, three pedals. An unbeatable combination. Boy do I wish more manufacturers would do this today (let alone sell it for LESS than the loaded out one!) Great video as always Harry!
David Soroka that’s why they make vids on them. Why else does Petrolicious make really aesthetic vids about cars that Top Gear has written off as garbage, manny koshbin is plugging SLRs bc he owns 4 of them yet they can be picked up for 3-400k. All waiting for the markets rebound as they try to inflate them on social media. I think harry truly loves his cars though
As old as I am, growing up very few cars had a/c...we didn’t die. If it was super hot out, you just did your driving after sundown. Considering the weight savings, that one change alone would really center the weight on this car more than a deleted sun visor...plus all your buds would know this is a serious drivers car. Man, this thing has all the right 911 sounds, amplified.
Brings back some memories of my youth when I got to drive many times a friend's father's 2.7L Carrera and 3.3L Turbo. They were just SO different from driving a 'normal' car. Absolutely joyous experiences if you enjoy driving just for the hell of it.
I actually had a poster of one of these on my bedroom wall when I was 9 years old. I must say the years have been far kinder to it than they have me. It's still a stunning looking car after all this time. If I could only have one car for the rest of my life, this would be it. Awesome bit of kit.
Remember reading about it and its philosophy/specs in the French motor press at the time. Was struck by the idea ,even though I didn’t know much about RS and so forth, back then, and was more attracted by the Gemballas and Countach of the era… Great to hear you praise this model for all the good reasons
I had a 1964 and a 1974 VW Beetle and I was in a shopping centre car park one day (Corrimal, Australia) and an old bloke approached me to talk about my white 74 and happened to mention casually that he had a 1966 911E (white as well). So eventually I got his number and gave him (and his 911) a social visit and surprisingly he offered me to drive it after he'd warmed it up. After driving old Beetles for years what struck me right away without a doubt was the thought that the 911 felt like a VW Beetle where everything was familiar yet more iron fisted in the sound and push it gave on throttle. Basically the pedals were like a VW but took more effort to push. Getting back in my VW the VW now felt like a toy version of the 911. I've also driven a 1978 and again the Beetle feel beefed up was there. There's really nothing like those rear engined cars.
Who needsTV when a new Harry’s garage comes to town. As a Porsche nut , this car just sums up the marque (IMHO). I bought my first one ( a 56,000 mile 1987 Targa in white from Cridfords in Weybridge ) in 1992 and I have had them ever since and I’m 60 now. Thanks Harry...totally compelling viewing as always...
Great review Harry, as always and such a special car. Love that little bonus, at 13:25 of a Purple 911 flashing past the other way. Looks like a 71/72 2,4. :)
Well spotted, indeed. Agree, I love the earlier 911s. Brings back memories of my Dad having an early 1970s 2.0 911t, in an almost Kawasaki-esque green, back in the 80s. Fabulous car. We drove through the Alps, Dad driving, mum in the front passenger seat, me in one back seat, my brother in the other, and my baby brother wedged in a baby crib over the central hump and our legs. I kid you not! And my dad drove it like he stole it. Those were the days!
Such a beautiful car and the engine sounds glorious. I wanted a 911 all my adult life but only recently managed to buy probably the cheapest UK 911 I could find. It may only be a 996 but it's a manual, non sunroof 3.6 so still hints at the air cooled cars it replaced. I love how it sounds and drives. I just need to add some lightness.
Thanks Harry for posting this. Not watched the video yet but been in love with this car since it appeared on the Fast Lane audio tape including the F40 around Donnington with Mark Hales. I hope you like it and do not shatter my 30 year illusions ....
Watched the video ... 30 year love for this car not shattered. Just a brilliant car that is not overwhelmed by modern day grip or grunt and is not too wide. Amazing to think that this limited edition was sold for less money than the regular one also.. how things change. As an aside Chris Harris bought one of the Porsche UK press cars but then sold it on.
What I admire about Porsche is their long standing commitment to these type of "driver" versions that are always much greater than the sum of their changes over other models. As you note, their purity of purpose makes them very special.
I attempted to buy one of these in 2005 for the princely sum of £25K from one of the now disgraced Yorkshire specialists but he had a 959 in a ditch somewhere and didnt have the time to deal with me. Superb car.
Don’t know why, just never really got the 911 ‘thing’ but as I get older (48 now) I seem to be becoming fond of them, especially the older air cooled ones. Harry really sold this one to me though, his enthusiasm for it was infectious! My first lottery garage will always be full of BMW’s but I may now build a Porsche one next to it, 🤔
I remember having the privilege of driving one at the time on country roads with one of my friend who is a car journalist. Soooo nice , light and nimble and i remember the sound , chainy-like.... Cheers 🇨🇦
Great review Harry, all the pluses and minuses of owning a 911 3.2. I owned a 3.2 Cab from 2005 to 2011. The interior was odd - switchgear, pedals, but the view over the five dials looking at the raised guards - beautiful.G50 with a short shifter great and the noise from start-up to redline, hairs on the neck!! No loss with air-con, I had it here in Australia, didn't really work - condenser at the front, pump in the rear, just too much loss and only added weight.Since I sold, prices doubled, but worth every cent.
Great seeing the old 911 going the other way! I had an ‘89 Carrera and it was a great time for these cars. I’m a bit surprised to see Turbo seats in it, but it would appear that they are necessary!
Bravo. I had a 86 Carrera 3.2 and adored it. They are great cars, with this, the CS being the best. Nice to see you genuinely enjoying the car. Great video 🙏🏻
Fast Lane also gave away a cassette of this and some others (Ferrari F40, Audi Quattro, Sierra Cosworth) being driven around Donnington by Mark Hales in 1989. Also the car in that test may have been the first press car or possibly this one. Chris Harris who you may have heard of, owned it later when he was working for Autocar. I have read that the under body protection was included as standard on UK cars, but not others. ruclips.net/video/gSWLgk9x40c/видео.html
Chris Wade That’s right Chris, I remember that , it was an excellent mag .the fastlane highlight for me was the Lamborghini countach review they did , I think it was 1986 ,I had waited years on them getting their hands on the qv model . I was about 14 at the time I could hardly contain my excitement when I was reading it , I still have the mag to this day ! Of course Harry’s lucky enough to actually own a QV 😀
50 years from now, when all cars are quiet electrics that drive themselves, this video will be in an automobile museum, highlighting the passion that has been lost
Together with the SC/RS 3.0 street version, this 3.2 CS is my alltime favourite 911, imho the last real 911. Torpedo wings, no power steering, manual gears, no ABS, no traction control, no ESC, watercooled. Fantastic car.
Another great video from Harry. I really enjoy these, especially anything Porsche having bought my first one just over 2 years ago (2010 997.2 GT3) and more recently a 991.2 Carrera 4 GTS. Saw a lovely 2.7 in Puerto Banus last week which had a dashboard signed by James Hunt.
Thanks Harry - what an utterly perfect 911 - I’ve always had such a soft spot for the CS - vastly overlooked and underrated by those that don’t know. Great review as ever.
Harry always talks about the views and glass in classic cars, as I understand it that changed because of crash protection, higher doors and thicker pillars etc.
I remember in the late 90's when I had a 3.2 Carrera and the general consensus was that these were not really worth the extra £5k or so over a standard car. How times have changed that viewpoint....
What a beautiful car, since my childhood in the 70's and 80's I've adored the look of these cars,it's a shame more "sports" cars arn't available with all the heavy crap stripped out and genuinely light weight.Another great review Harry!👍✌
I remember back when I read about this Club Sport Carrera in a car magazine. 25 years later I had the opportunity to buy myself a 911 Carrera. Not a Club Sport version, but a newer 997. Hvite. Lovely car to drive, used often on the track to make fast laps. One thing I hated though, where all the extra gadgets like cup-holders etc. Would have loved if all those extras had been stripped out and made it as light as possible.
Echo that. Harry's unusual in being not the slightest “up himself”, despite being evidently wealthy and owning a literal barn full of really lovely machines. In a recent year in review episode, he stepped through the work done, experiences and costs of the years ownership. I’m nothing like as wealthy, and even I thought “You know, considering what he got for his money, it’s not that big an outgoing”. I’m not a buyer of even moderately expensive cars, £50K not £150K, but if you’re in between that & buy unwisely, you could shed that much in depreciation in a handful of years. I doubt Harry’s “fleet” does anything but appreciate. I’d not be faintly surprised if even restoring 1-2 cars per year, mostly farmed out to marque specialists, aren’t “free” from a balance sheet perspective. Some of those cars will tip the scales at close to a million pounds. What a great way to diversify wealth. In a different life, eh? I often reflect that I couldn’t really ask for much more from my life than Im fortunate to have. But the two exceptions would be a much bigger secure space and a couple of nice, old cars and 1-2 more motorcycles. I find time an even bigger hurdle. That makes vicarious enjoyment of Harry’s garage that bit more treasured.
I had that same Pioneer head unit in my old E30, trying (as I'm sure the owner of that did) to keep it looking somewhat retro but yet have a good stereo.
I am working for this bloke Harry who has one of the most beautiful Bentley’s I have seen it’s absolutely stunning. What a design. It’s a 2010 Super Sport with 20k miles a full Bentley service history. It’s in mint condition. I asked him if he would sell it and his reply was that he was thinking about it. I immediately thought of you because I know you appreciate the Bentley brand. I Watch all of your videos and I can see this in your garage it’s been cherished. This bloke has some connections with Bentley. He is a lovely bloke who lives in Wheatley Oxford. If my project house build was sold I would consider it but brexit has me on pause. I should have been a farmer lol.👍
Another great car review. Thanks Harry. I love this period of 911, when lightweight meant lightweight. Although i do quite like the most recent model, the water cooled era cars, to me, just don't have that same magic of the air cooled ones. Plus, living in London, new 911's are everywhere, and not like, when i was younger, growing up in rural Oxfordshire, when seeing a 911, or any Porsche for that matter, was a memorable sight. Just one thing though. Although i understand about putting a car on a diet to lose as much unnecessary weight as possible, only having the one sunvisor seems a little ott. Having a passenger visor without a vanity mirror, yes, but how much difference is losing a couple of sun visor ounces of going to make to performance
I remember having a big, glossy supercar book as a kid ('Dream Cars' or something?) with this car in it. Didn't really appreciate rarity as a young kid so it always confused me that the 911's I'd see in real life didn't have red wheels and door lettering. The thumbnail instantly reminded me of it!
I knew a middle age businessman who bought a TVR. He had to call his PA (my flatmate) when he forgot where the doorhandle was. He was stuck in sainsburys car park for 25 mins before he swallowed his pride! a few months late the battery ran dead, the AA came out to charge it, somehow it caught fire and just burnt to a cinder.
I must say I love the very 80s trend of putting the name of the car along with anything that would make it stand out emblazoned in huge letters on the side. Also, what a great collection you've got. My only reason for wanting to be "rich" would be to own a stable of cars like that.
LOVE the way you blipped the throttle before changing gear, still do that on my cars, BUT for the life of me, i CANT remember the last time i saw a biker do this........it`s CERTAINLY a dying art.............................
1.1K thumbs up against 5 down. YOu dont often see that ratio but here....... quite rightly ...........it is so. A Harry M video as usual the highlight of my day.

Don’t know why, just never really got the 911 ‘thing’ but as I get older (48 now) I seem to be becoming fond of them, especially the older air cooled ones. Harry really sold this one to me though, his enthusiasm for it was infectious! My first lottery garage will always be full of BMW’s but I may now build a Porsche one next to it, 🤔
I laughed at the purple 911 going in the other direction at 13.26
13:25 a likewise old 911 goes by in the opposite direction - fvooom!
Harry thank you for another fantastic review, wow what a car! Would love to see you review a 964RS sometime soon!
Money saving tip: Take the space saver out, another 15 kgs gone. Porsche didn't think to charge for that in 1989. Today it would be a 10k option.
Bravo. I had a 86 Carrera 3.2 and adored it. They are great cars, with this, the CS being the best. Nice to see you genuinely enjoying the car. Great video 🙏🏻
Same formula as the RS America, my first love.
Those pinstripe seats are amazing
Excellent again
Love that car , I remember fast lane magazine testing one back in the day
Fast Lane also gave away a cassette of this and some others (Ferrari F40, Audi Quattro, Sierra Cosworth) being driven around Donnington by Mark Hales in 1989. Also the car in that test may have been the first press car or possibly this one. Chris Harris who you may have heard of, owned it later when he was working for Autocar. I have read that the under body protection was included as standard on UK cars, but not others. ruclips.net/video/gSWLgk9x40c/видео.html
exactly, had the mag.
Chris Wade
That’s right Chris, I remember that , it was an excellent mag .the fastlane highlight for me was the Lamborghini countach review they did , I think it was 1986 ,I had waited years on them getting their hands on the qv model .
I always look forward to these reviews.
Harry is just the man. What a commentator. Would happily watch entire football matches or tennis matches if he was commentating lol
The problem it's harder to get freebies as a sports commentator...
One of my favorite 911s ever.
Superb. I just love that distinctive howl from the cooling fan between the gear changes.
Holy Lord what a machine....Thanks Harry for showing us such gem!
Modern cars have to be heavy because of all the safety regulations, airbags, things like that...
Your childhood went through the 70 and 80s
Man child😆😆
If he was born 1970, the 70s and 80s would cover childhood and a bit beyond. At 15, most are more than children but they’re not adults either.
Lovely to see, thanks Harry
Fantastic Harry, one of my all time fave 911's too. Love your enthusiasm and the way you enjoy your machines. Thanks for sharing your CS with us.
Always loved these, especially with the glorious CS decal draped over the fender.
All I would ever want is one of these…. To me, it’s perfect.
The shape I regard as a "proper" 911 before they began to "fill out". Beautiful bared down car with all the right things and none of the nonsense.
Pin stripe seats for the win!
“But I digress, as usual” 😂. Whatever you do, Harry, keep digressing. Another great review by the best, most charming, car reviewer. 👍
Stunning car...those seats are over the top
I remember having a big, glossy supercar book as a kid ('Dream Cars' or something?) with this car in it. Didn't really appreciate rarity as a young kid so it always confused me that the 911's I'd see in real life didn't have red wheels and door lettering.
The thumbnail instantly reminded me of it!
Aling with the original rs and 996 gt3 rs, one if the great 911’s
I knew a middle age businessman who bought a TVR. He had to call his PA (my flatmate) when he forgot where the doorhandle was. He was stuck in sainsburys car park for 25 mins before he swallowed his pride! a few months late the battery ran dead, the AA came out to charge it, somehow it caught fire and just burnt to a cinder.
As ever an excellent review, clearly a real professional, well done.
I do love the early 911,s stunning car
I must say I love the very 80s trend of putting the name of the car along with anything that would make it stand out emblazoned in huge letters on the side.
Also, what a great collection you've got. My only reason for wanting to be "rich" would be to own a stable of cars like that.
LOVE the way you blipped the throttle before changing gear, still do that on my cars, BUT for the life of me, i CANT remember the last time i saw a biker do this........it`s CERTAINLY a dying art.............................
brilliant enthusiasm.
Wow ! What a dashing review (quite literally) thanks
Buy it Harry...you love that car.
Great video, Harry. Love the car!
Great video Harry! I’m a huge 911 fan but I didn’t even know this existed, so thank you!
1.1K thumbs up against 5 down.
YOu dont often see that ratio but here....... quite rightly ...........it is so.
A Harry M video as usual the highlight of my day.
