    That’s exactly right. I learned the perfect tenses in high school and college but I have never really used them confidently. I struggled and oftentimes didn’t use it at all since I was afraid I would be making mistakes. Luckily, I came across this channel. My sentences will still be riddled with mistakes but I know for sure with practice and with your help, I’ll be fine.

    I'm not exaggerating, but this video is incredible. I've just ordered a book for advanced grammar. I read this topic in the book more than once, but it wasn't clear at all. Although, this book is supposed to be the best world selling! I just understood it perfectly when I listened to this video. The best way of explaining ever. Thank you so much. From now on, I will refer to Oxford Online English every time.
    You are fantastic. It is perfect, so professional.

    Hi, Teacher. I watched your lesson and I liked. Let me talk about what happened to me before I came to London. I had learnt English before I came to London. Luckily I found good teachers in the college which helped me enormously with grammar. Later I remembered that I had had some English lesson when was eleven years old. Thank you Teacher for an amazing lesson. I always learn from you.

    Thank you for the video. In one grammar book, I found an exception of the rule, which states that it is possible to use either Past Simple or Past perfect with conjunctions (after, before, as soon as, then). However, with before+past perfect, the action in the past simple happens first: I left university before I'd taken the final exams. So, what action happened first? Why do they use it? What was the intention? or it also can be used for a past action which prevented a later action from happening: She sacked him before he'd had a chance to explain his behavior. This is really mind-blowing! This breaks all the rules.

    • @Oxfordonlineenglish1
      @Oxfordonlineenglish1  4 года назад +2

      Hi Ilnara, thanks for asking your question. If you think about the timeline, it still follows the rules. In 'I left university before I'd taken the final exams', the opportunity to take the exams was present before leaving university. That is why we use the past perfect to represent the opportunity to take them before you left. In 'She sacked him before he'd had a chance to explain his behavior', the chance to explain was present before she sacked him, but he did not take that opportunity. Therefore, we could also say: 'He hadn't had a chance to explain his behavior before she sacked him' which is the same meaning. It's important to think about the timeline of opportunity when something didn't happen. Does that make sense?

Having watched several videos on RUclips where the Past Perfect is not taught well, because they don't make clear when to use it, it is really refreshing to find one where it *_is_* taught properly. And in an interesting and engaging way because it is taught through living, everyday situations!
