I've been wanting to try it but where I'm at here in Louisiana, we just don't fly fish. Ha but the fly tying is so interesting to me. Always wanted to try it but it takes so many different materials to get into. Some of those guys are freakin SIK! But I feel that u would b pretty good at it, especially with some good practice. I would absolutely recommend you learn to tie your own!
Easiest patterns for bass to start out with:
-Wolly Bugger
-Clouser Minnow
-Foam Popper
- Leftys Deciever
- Murdich Minnow

If you want to get into Tying flies I would definitely recommend just starting off with a simple old fashion woolly bugger they’re pretty easy to make but it will take a while to learn
That’s definitely sounding like a good starter fly based on another couple recommendations as well. I appreciate all the feedback!
yep tie your own learn it. but dont buy from big box stores find local fly shops and support them and get your stuff from local. some fly shops actually have little demos to learn how to fly fish or little classes to take to learn how to fly fish and tie flys. a decent vise also helps
Tailwaters in Dallas does fly tying events fairly regularly. I need to go to one!
we stop there on our way from GA to visit family in OK. Just about the half way point and a great place to stop, walk and maybe do a little shopping.

If you want to learn fly tying, find a local club and take some tying classes. Or find a relatively easy fly (Clouser Minnow) and tie it over and over, till you get your thread tension/material handling dialed in.

You Definitely should get into tying your own flies! Start out with a wooly bugger. You can tie it along with a tutorial, and then add your own little touches.

You should try the gummy minnow flies those were designed by the same fella as the game changer you would need a sinking line or leader

Get the perfect hatch basic fly tying kit. I got it last week and I have made lots of flies and all the flies are fun to tie. There are 6 fly patterns in the kit.

Try the lews pro sp lite spool it's changed my life. And I've e only had Shimano's. It's made for skipping and flipping but I use it for bfs . It's a game changer

If you are going to start tying, pick a narrow genre you use and just setup for THAT. You can rack up as much of a bill as you want, or you can keep it fairly modest. Vice's are a pain, there's a huge jump in price from chinese or indian junk imports that are all pretty lousy to "holy shit" prices for really nice ones. The cheap ones fall apart fast, but if you make sure stuff stays snug and maybe touch up the rough spots they can do ok to get started. Hareline has some decent kits for general supplies, Amazon is actually one of the cheapest sources on those. But after that, try to pick a genre because otherwise you can go nuts fast.
I blame you for having me back to figuring out whether I wanna start tying again or not. I used to enjoy that as a hobby even more than the fishing. Perils of having lived in the snowy north.
