Nathan Jones Nice man. I habe tried Ertai zombies but the problem was that my playgroup did not really like the idea of their stuff getting countered constantly so they killed him om sight. Aaaaand after a few tries to improve it I didn't like it anymore so I scrapped it. I do hope that you have fun with it!
Archfiend of ifnir can be a fun addition even thou it's not a zombie, because when it's on the battlefield and you draw and discard with Varina you also wipe all the enemy board And white gives you access to some interesting embalm cards like Angel of sanction or Aven wind guide, which gives flying and vigilance to all your zombie token Also, welcome back Jimmy! 🎉
I love how reconnaissance's flavor text is a subtle nod at how to use it. "War favors the informed" is literally "combat (step) favors those who understand it"

I have a Sidisi, Brood Tyrant deck with a strong zombie theme. The zombies were getting pushed out though in favor of stronger interactions. I am so glad the zombies are getting a new home! Awesome breakdown guys!
Yes I think Varina is a good card. I once made a Thraximundar zombie tribal deck, but the red felt lacking as a supporting third color. Having white opens up a lot more doors that you two talked about. I may rebuild zombie tribal with Varina in the future. Thanks for the video. Go defeat the Huns Jimmy.

I literally rebuilt my zombie deck (which was previously red black blue) as soon as I got this commander! I did see some new combos in this video so thank you guys! I will be paying a visit to card kingdom!
Cemetery reaper Is a good option here too. Cheap cost at 1 and 2 black. Gives all your zombies +1/+1 and it has a similar type of effect Scarab God has where you can exile a creature card from any graveyard and you make a 2/2 zombie token.
Elesh Norn and Radiant Destiny seems like fine includes too. I love Varina and she got me to 2nd place at the latest FNM. Glad this is how Jimmy comes back!
I have only scrolled through the video so I might have missed it, but I haven't seen Tombstone Stairwell in their suggestions. This card should be an absolute must when building this deck. Combined with Wayward Servant, you should win the game before your turn comes back (unless someone has a disenchant or exiles your graveyard or... but still). Add a free sac outlet and the value is ridiculous.

Very excited! I want to try something with handsize matters. The aristocrats route is great, and obviously her primary role, but something less obvious is calling to me. I am really happy you mentioned Necromancer's Covenant; I've been dreaming of that card in a zombie commander deck forever! I'm also excited to use madness to some degree.
Dj has done a few joint podcasts with them and they're by far my favorite videos on both of their channels. The synergy between them is just amazing as hosts.
Just a little comment about approach of the second sun. I think you guys missunderstod it, the second cast can be countered so that the effect don't resolves. The effect does not trigger as you cast it, just if you cast it from your hand. You only win the game if the seccond cast resolves, the first one does not matter if it got countered or not tho (except for the fact that it goes in you graveyard if it does get countered, and it's harder then to cast it for the second time). But it's still an awesome card that this deck should definitely run.
I feel Liliana, Untouched by Death would be a great addition. Her +1 tops up your graveyard and adds to your war of attrition. Her -2 is good at removing most threatening creatures and gets around indestructible. And her -3 let's you play Zombies from your yard. If you have a rooftop storm in play it pretty much reads 'Return all zombies from your Graveyard to the Battlefield' for 4 CMC.
I think my favorite card form the new set is Kestia the Cultivator. Hope to see a deck tech on her in the future! I already have a list for her, but there are probably some less well-known cards I missed.

I know you guys can't talk about every card, but there are probably some that I am a bit surprised I didn't see that might also fit the strategy: Throne of the God-Pharaoh - Attacking is a great way to get in some damage, but what if you can also tack on some extra damage? Not to mention, with cards that have a tap effect or you can get Cryptbreakers to tap down some more creatures of yours, you can also start to deal damage even if you cannot target or swing in. Sure it might not be the same as the Aristocrat sense of the deck, but if you are going more aggressive or making more tokens with your commander, or hell, even Army of the Damned, imagine casting it with Anointed Possession out and then dealing 26 damage for just having tapped creatures! Cemetery Reaper - A bit expensive in cost, but can be an anti-graveyard card while still furthering your own token creating plan Rootborn Defenses - can be a cheap alternative to Teferi's Protection; make your creatures indestructible against a board wipe and if you got a token, make another! Intangible Virtue - While slightly more expensive than Reconnaissance, it is also an another anthem affect. Sure it doesn't work with your non-tokens, but if the main goal is to make tokens and swing, giving them vigilance AND a buff is great! Noxious Ghoul - Depending on the volume of which you create zombies, being able to wipe out smaller creatures just by making a few tokens or even making a big guy weaker and less likely to survive if they try and stop your army, Noxious Ghoul can get in some serious work! Vela the Night-Clad - While not a zombie herself, she provides evasion as well as another Aristocrat type effect. Binding Mummy - I'm really surprised not to see this in the deck. If you were worried about blockers or have instant speed Zombie token creation, using Binding Mummy to tap down a big beater or some blockers, hell even some of the mana rocks the opponent has so they cant cast as many spells on your turn is great in my book! Amulet of Vigor - Might have more synergy than you think! Shock lands, your duals and stuff like that now enter untapped. But now the tokens you make with your commander now enter untapped, and anything else also enters untapped, so cards like Blind Obedience and stuff like that now get to enter untapped! Altar of the Brood/Undead Alchemist - Talking about alternative win cons, Altar of the Brood can just be a value train when you make tokens, play lands and anything else you need. Sure its not "game winning", but you might also make them think twice when they scry now, or you mill away a card they just got. Adding in Undead Alchemist can be a win con. In decks where allot of creatures exist, being able to make large amounts of tokens and getting to mill people out can trigger the Undead Alchemist multiple times. So if three people mill three creatures, thats now 9 more tokens you make. You now mill them for 9 more cards. Any amount of creatures now going from the library to the graveyard now causes them to lose even MORE of their library. More players means more chances for it to trigger. However, it also turns off a big damage component to the deck. But you could also just sac it later

Varina was literally the only card I bought from the entire c18 set. I considered going aristocrat style but decided I would try a control strategy with board clears and use powerful enchants and sorceries like rise of the dark realms and grave betrayal first.

I think the movie is called SUCKER PUNCH, and it features that song from the Cranberries, and yes there are Zombie soldiers that are fighting against the team of beautiful female protagonists. In her mind Babydoll is at war, but really inside of a mad house, trying to collect a map, knife, key, and fire to escape.
Nice to see jimmy again. Good job with the deck tech. It seems fun. Well of lost dreams seems like a fit to this deck. Also thought reflection for the same effect as alhameret's archive. A nice card would be vizier of many faces, since it's a copy that's a zombie. Urza's incubator is always great for tribals, and archfiend of ifnir just mass removals every turn. Noxious ghoul is a powerful card. You can't really play it in sidisi or gisa&geralf since your commander is not a zombie so it'll just die, but here it's a perfect fit. Oh, and zombie apocalipes.
The aristocrats deck you guys were thinking of was the one that won Pro Tour Gatecrash piloted by Tom Martell. Blood Artist, Cartel Aristocrat, Lingering Souls, Doomed Traveler, Falkenrath Aristocrat, etc.

Zombie by bad wolves is a cover of if . The lead singer of the cranberries (Niall Quinn) was going to sing with them but past away before they did it . They made the song at a tribute to her.
A little known creature that just came up in another podcast that fits *Ace Ventura voice activate* Llllllike a glove *deactivate* is Grave Scrabbler. My god, does it do work. Swing, pitch stuff, madness it, get back more stuff, card advantage for days.
You absolutely have to resolve Approach of the Second Sun to win the game, it has no cast triggers, all the text on Approach is an effect that checks if you have cast it from your hand or not, and it does not have a cast trigger.
But when do we get to see it in action? Varina has several new tools since she was released and a few reprints to make her a little more cost effective. I just finished retooling my version of her and she's gotten a lot more consistent. Bone Miser was a big help out of last years pre-cons, and with Zombie Infestation, it can rapidly out pace the table if left unchecked. Id love to see an update, or some game play. I feel as though she deserves a little more love hahaa.
Curse you, Jimmy! Now I need to build my third Esper deck, which will be my first Aristocrats deck. I have historically been opposed to sacrificing my creatures for gain, but y'all have convinced me.
Great episode, nz is a country with a lot of history. History that isnt always on the face of things. There is a side of nz and a side of hawaii that isnt always seen
The only thing about Shepherd Of Rot is that it will also deal damage to you. I'd have to look at that a little more and see if I could get some sort of balance out of it.

In my version I decided to do embalm and eternalize tribal. Really hit hard on the token theme

Aristocrats backup is what I do with Edgar Markov, its a great backup and has gotten me through a lot of times where I couldn't win through combat.

Fanatical Devotion is a neat way to have a sac outlet and protect your commander and other important zombies at the same time.
I still think when Jimmy gets back, you guys should make Command Zone a 3 person show with Josh, Jimmy, and DJ.
Maybe just from time to time? I'm sure it's a lot of extra work for DJ with his own channel.

Archfiend of Ifnir Allows for a very strong board wipe that only hits opponents field and it a 5/4 flyer which is super strong for zombies
Archfiend of Ifnir works so well in this deck. I love my Varina deck. One of my favorites. Just the flavor, she looks like shes from Amonkhet.

I'm glad a lot of decks have graveyard hate in them as default. Mainly one of the people I play with has an annoying Meren deck.
Grave Titan, Ghoulcaller Gisa, Cemetery Reaper, and Havengul Runebinder all seem like great additions
For what it's worth, Another One Bites the Dust also works for chest compressions, Which is way more fitting for zombie clerics.
You may think Stayin Alive is the best rhythm, but Another One Bites The Dust works as well

I think the movie is called SUCKER PUNCH, and it features that song from the Cranberries, and yes there are Zombie soldiers that are fighting against the team of beautiful female protagonists. In her mind Babydoll is at war, but really inside of a mad house, trying to collect a map, knife, key, and fire to escape.

Well of lost dreams seems like a fit to this deck. Also thought reflection for the same effect as alhameret's archive. A nice card would be vizier of many faces, since it's a copy that's a zombie.
Urza's incubator is always great for tribals, and archfiend of ifnir just mass removals every turn. Noxious ghoul is a powerful card. You can't really play it in sidisi or gisa&geralf since your commander is not a zombie so it'll just die, but here it's a perfect fit.
Oh, and zombie apocalipes.

the scarab god would do some serious work in this deck, people tend to forget he drains life and scrys based on your # of zombies
You absolutely have to resolve Approach of the Second Sun to win the game, it has no cast triggers, all the text on Approach is an effect that checks if you have cast it from your hand or not, and it does not have a cast trigger.
But when do we get to see it in action? Varina has several new tools since she was released and a few reprints to make her a little more cost effective. I just finished retooling my version of her and she's gotten a lot more consistent. Bone Miser was a big help out of last years pre-cons, and with Zombie Infestation, it can rapidly out pace the table if left unchecked. Id love to see an update, or some game play. I feel as though she deserves a little more love hahaa.
