I really do feel for WVU. A proud school that should not have these issues. Tech fans know what it’s like to have a mid coach that you don’t believe in. Hopefully some good news comes soon.
Well until WVU stops rewarding failure it just gets worse. Have a President who has the University in financial ruins, killed the sports programs, what does one expect. ? Success. WVU rewarded him with a contract extension????
Let's just go ahead and address the complete elephant in the room. WVU administration likely botched this coming season. WVU needed to get ahead of the curve and get rid of Neal Brown. I was with Neal until he got blown out by 30+ to a Texas Tech team that was a midcarder. Neal should have been axed Iast to get on with life. They didn't. Hopefully Neal proves me wrong but I seriously doubt it
Many WVU fans agree with you. Instead, they decided the A.D. was the issue because he agreed to a terrible buyout for Coach Brown and was not good at the fundraising aspect of the job (including NIL). Let’s hope they were right.
I held on until he choked the Pitt game away with calling a time out on 4th and 2nd in plus territory with the lead and just chose to punt when he had C.J Donaldson blasting through I can't remember his YPC but it was great and I also cant remember the exact game but we litterally went out it was the very FIRST play they line up on shotgun didn't even snap the ball and he called a time out just for them to literally walk back out in the exact same formation even the commentary crew was like "the hell is this dude thinking"
In my mind this hole season comes down to a couple things. #1 Will Neal Brown commit to running the ball and be creative in the running game plays ? #2 The play of the secondary will have to be much better. If those two things happen I think the mountaineers could have a successful season.
We will run the ball because they cannot do anything else. Load the box and well that goes away. Defense will be a mess again. They might shine against Duquesne, maybe
It all depends on the pressure we get on the QB , do a spread sheet on that ? How many pressures and tipped passes did we have ? Can we disrupt of QB play ? Make them stay and pass , means not letting them run , contain the running lanes , that is a key to interceptions. Plus getting the defense off the field. Our defense use to be aggressive , blissing , moving around disrupting ! That's what they need to do again, it's not rocket science, do what works well in the passed ! A good coach should know ! Go Mountaineer new season , look forward not backwards guys. Kick Penn States butt let's go!
Transfers I think are one of the reasons for finishing last in turnovers caused. Starters that were very good transferred to Georgia and other SEC schools. That had to hurt the defensive secondary, especially since one of them was a Freshman All America.
Welcome back from vacation and hope you got the electrical issues taken care of. First couple of years, I don't think we had guys who played angles well, often good at breaking up a pass but not playing for the interception. However, I think the biggest issue, especially the last two years, has been that the personnel didn't permit playing an aggressive defense. They didn't have guys for man coverage, which makes it harder to bring pressure. Pressure leads to offensive mistakes, which leads to turnovers. In 2021, the defensive backfield was smashed with injuries in terms of numbers, and in 2022, Woods' injury changed the plan from aggressive to softer zone once again. I think the complexity of the defense (especially in terms of reacting to shifts) added to the problem. The last 4 games last year were a taste of what we can expect this year with a faster, more aggressive defense. That didn't lead to a jump in turnovers, but it did mean a big increase in tackles for loss. That means pressure, pressure means forcing mistakes. Just have to take advantage by not dropping interceptions and not being last to see the ball on the ground. (Hey, I'm just 1 subscriber from 100...which will mean just 900 to go.)
Lack of pass rush , exposed inexperienced players, will be much better this year ,coaching how much bad coaching lead to a really bad last year . Where are the head hunters an ball hawks ,guys just flying around like with guys past . Shock the world mentality, such a great history. I appreciate your time and effort, great topics backed by facts we need to get mean on defense .
Not to put too much on this one season, but the overall problem of WV sports could be solved just by thinking like a winner and a big part of that is that the fans need to start embracing the winner’s role and forget the underdog role. Quit thinking about being the underdog and simply expect to win. And when the opportunity comes up to make a major difference in the program going forward, (ie Pitt 2007), learn how to win in these moments - and lose and forget the underdog role forever. Go Mountaineers!
COACHING COACHING COACHING, bad coaching results in bad play on the field. No coaching changes on the defensive side of the ball will equal same results. Sometimes athletes excel because they are physically gifted and do well inspite of their coaches. The fans might see that happen this year. I think the coaches did recruit some good players and missed on the others, but you can't win them all. That being said another great watch Couz.
Of course we hope for the turnover margin grows and it lead to success. In many ways two things in the first game will reveal the talent physically and mentally. How well we play and how well we recover IF WE LOSE.
Great show, Couz! I'm just getting up to speed on WVU ( my son is an incoming freshman this year) so I appreciate the insight. Looking at your lists, the turnover situation has to be addressed. However, those 4 incoming players do not impressme at all. I hope the existing DBs and new freshman recruits have some talent.
This is a problem for sure. And a pretty big one at that. But the biggest problem to me is a lack of discipline and situational awareness! Just plain stupid and selfish penalties at the worst possible times. The show boating after a big play. That causes lack of focus. That causes giving up an even bigger play on the very next snap. And all of this sometimes when we have been struggling all day to just stay in the game! Celebrate after you win the game and not a single time before! All that other nonsense is just projecting a lack of confidence in being able to win. It says I don’t think I have a chance at celebrating after the game I better do it after this touchdown or this sack! It’s an embarrassment to yourself and the team! If you make a big play focus line up and make another! When the clock strikes 00:00 then celebrate. Until you actually win something you have to that mindset. Or you may never win a really big game consistently
Please, they’re playing a damn game, i don’t want emotionally flat players. You stick someone be happy these dudes entire lives are centered around this one thing and when it works out let them be happy. Celebrating when you’re down by 14 isn’t okay but keep in mind they are playing a game and have dedicated their entire lives to it lol you are right tho I think the biggest issue is poor discipline coupled with poor game management and a bunch of other things that fall at the feet of the HC lol
And don’t get me wrong I enjoy a good celebration if you can move on and focus on the next play. But the team for a very long time has not had the discipline and maturity to do that. So they need to earn the right to do it.
I was just thinking about this today once upon a time the kids went home for the summer there was no staying in Morgantown for summer practice they all returned last week of July .
Good stuff brother, yeah the secondary "should" be much improved, still a little concerned about Will LB with the lack of experience there.. I don't think the D-line will be that great either but who knows.. Excited to see what that offense can do tho, feel like they can be pretty good
Don’t win much running the bill. Will burn up the clock. Greene will run against Duquesne , maybe but most other teams will let him throw because he can’t and stop him. The Wiz kid from AZ will be a disappointment and Neal Brown will be awarded another contract extension at 3 -9 record. The dumb ass BOD just awarded Gee a contract through 2025 and WVU is great at rewarding failure. Hope the voters in WV award the state legislatures a reward then by firing them..
Indeed Couz, no doubt that Brown's failed effort to install a "boring" pro-set air raid offense was due to poor play calling and statue-like immobile QB's that produced a lot of picks and loses (Pitt & KU pick-6 defeats). Maybe Brown's lackadaisical coaching and stubbornness was due to being under Lyon's umbrella of protection? Anyhow, that's what I believe. But, 2023 is different because Brown doesn't have the protection of the AD and is coaching for his reputation and career. I have a feeling the 2023 team is going to shock a lot of folks because there ain't no safety net, and both the coaching staff and players have been dismissed by everyone. Now there's motivation!!
I agree with the significance of turnovers but disagree with your assessment that the transfer players in the secondary will be significant difference makers on defense, for several reasons. 1) Like you pointed out, the influx of players in the secondary actually has a worse combined interceptions benchmark this year when compared to the previous transfer class AND they usually don't perform well the first 1-1.5 years with the team. 2) Interceptions aren't the only way to turn the ball over. 3) Look for the turnovers to come from the best playmakers we have on defense, starting with pressure up front: Sean Martin and a deep supporting cast along the defensive line (including Davoan Hawkins). At the Bandit position: Jared Bartlett, Tyrin Bradley, Brayden Dudley. Linebackers: Lee Kpogba and Tirek Austin-Cave. Safety: Aubrey Burks, Hershey McLaurin, and Lance Dixon. Corners: Jacolby Spells and Andrew Wilson-Lamp. Those are the difference makers I see on defense who will pressure/sack the QB, force fumbles, and then the linebackers and secondary has a few people who standout as being able to capitalize on forced passes.
