Every time J comes back they jump up 2 notches on their performance. I know people want them to get a permanent member to tour before he gets out of the Navy, but I want J back as a permanent member.
Layne is actually of Scandinavian (Viking) ancestry, so this is likely right up his alley. Man is connecting with his ancestors on this one. This could legit be a soundtrack of a movie. Eli went up to Asgard to grab his notes, Geoff went down to Helheim to grab his notes, J.None borrowed his smooth melody from the realm of Alfheim, Caesar has the bloodlust of Thor in his eyes, and Layne has the cool calmness of Heimdall guarding the percussion ready to sound the horn for Ragnarök.
It's difficult to pick one moment out of VoicePlay's amazing arrangement of this amazing song - but the glint in Geoff's eyes and that slight smile as he sings: "Shields and spears" is worth a *shiver* or two. :D
Fun fact, what we now call rap battles were first invented by Vikings, it was called flyting, and was a almost ritual of insulting each other or bragging in verse, which means that JNones part actually fits perfectly
Layne did the arrangement, but Eli moved mountains on this one. Only one word for this song. Epic. Really hoping we get another installment. They do Vikings so well!
@@lauraeditor Technically they have zero baritones normally since J None left, but with groups as talented as this you don't need one since Eli can wherever the heck you want him to be (except for Geoffs basement). @@Gufnorkian Well, they listed Cesar as a baritone in this one, that's what I was going from (although he also sounds great in the tenor range!). Voiceplay parked Geoff in the basement for this one and he formed the bedrock that lets the others soar like that. I’m not sure he ever got out of his lowest range during the song. Add to that he looks like the Kurgan’s even meaner brother (look it up). Eli and J None, especially J None make this one fly.

I love all Voiceplay's collaborators but these are THE FIVE & it's brilliant when J gets leave & flies in to make a video!! Geoff's new one's out next Friday plenty of bass & a sweet video.
I know what you mean, I think I listen to the song 10 times in a row and always found something new! And just have to wait for it to release on RUclips, I think my new hobby is to watch voiceplay breaking reactors and vocal coaches😂
Such an epic song! Loved Cesar in this one too, his acting was on par with how he was in Hoist the Colours. So intense! And he wore the same cloak Jose wore in my mother told me 😊
This is single handedly one of the best covers ever, i mean J NONE's rap, Eli and Cesear with their amazing rock tenor side lanes betboxing and of course Geoffs mega low B0's were absolutely amazing - I'm kinda scared how easy that soudned and how long he held it for, Great reaction Dave. Loving the new content!
That note that Geoff was just holding before his solo in the beginning was a B0. The lowest note on the piano. The good majority of the time, Geoff was in the 1st octave
Ever since watching the premiere I've been waiting for reactors to explode when they watch this & you - as usual - did not disappoint! This is such an epic production in every way from Eli's backgrounds to seeing the whites of our favorite "berserkers" eyes. I've lost count of how many times I've watched/listened to this in the past day and I can't imagine getting tired of it. I'm hoping that the imagery of J None returning to the group from the sea is just foreshadowing what will come, because these 5 together are mind bending!! Love from Texas! ❤💜💙
Two things keep running through my head. 1) J None comes back during every leave time as far as we know. 2) Why do you think they're keeping the 5th position open? I'm hoping I'm right. I love Omar as a +1, so to speak, and would not mind at all of that +1 equals 6. And of course with an occasional Rachel, Ashley, Jose, or Adriana stepping in, too. They were all wonderful additions.
9:00 fun fact, the vikings invented the first rap battles lol, they would roast eachother and build themselves up in the forms of improvised poetry, it was one of the Norseman's biggest social hobbies, its oddly fitting to have a rap verse here.
I love the increased tempo when compared to the original. It Makes me want to go to war. Cesar and Layne both went fierce warrior that surprised me but shouldn't have. This is epic from everyone
I thought they wouldn't get it any better, than last (their cover My mother told me) ... but... this is VOICEPLAY!!! these guys will never let you down. as far as I'm used to Geoff, but I'm surprised again)
Ceasar was basically the crazed berserker viking of the group. The one that runs in first, dual wielding axes and just taking out the whole enemy army.
Vikings would do what was called "flighting", which was basically poetic rap battles, so don't let anyone say that the rap is out of place! I love your reactions Dave! ❤💜💙
Yeah, I'd forgotten about that. I read a lot of Marvel/Avengers fan fiction and have run across Tony picking that up from Loki while traveling the worlds together. Although I've always seen it spelled flyting. Looks more Norse to me that way.
@@nightthornkvala94132 Yup, it's flyting, fliting, or a bunch of other spellings depending on the country of origin. It's a super old tradition dating back to 5th century, common among Anglo-Saxons and Norsemen among others. What J does in the video could be considered flyting if you squint, though it's way too tame - flyting's supposed to be insulting first and foremost and he's more focused on boasting. The rap section reminds me more of a classic battle poem, still pretty accurate to the Norse tradition.
As Much as I ADORE Peyton Parrish, Miracle of Sound, and Eric Holloway’s version-THIS version has incredible depth and is the ONLY version that has given me goosebumps.
Honestly, as a long-time VoicePlay fan, they could totally do no wrong in my eyes. Every cover is pure fire, but this one...this one has absolutely taken the top spot for me as one of their very best.
Your reaction to this is one I've been waiting for since it was released yesterday!! Loved it! 👍 Miracle of Sound has 4 versions of this on his channel - his original, a duet with Peyton, a trio with Peyton and Eric Holloway (That Bass Voice) and a metal version. Jonathan Young has also done a stonking metal version. And now along comes VoicePlay with their epic take on it! When VP put out a "short" heralding this I was excited as I'd been thinking that a cover by them was needed. As expected, they didn't disappoint! (MoS has commented on VP's video that this is the most creative version he's heard/seen.) Geoff's bass, outstanding as ever, made me come over all unnecessary 😍- it seemed somehow richer and more powerful than ever in this mix. Eli brought out his inner rock god - always welcome! Cesar scared me!! He can look so sweet and playful yet here he was so intense in his characterisation and he brought out an inner rock god I didn't realise he possessed! Even Layne's vocals had a touch of rock god rasp to them and his beatboxing was as insane as always. And then J None came in with some rap! Now I'm an old bird who loves rock (as you might have guessed from my comments about rock gods and rock rasp!) and doesn't tend to like rap but this just seemed to fit so well. Acappella Vikings with rock and rap? 🤨Surely that shouldn't work 😵💫but it did! There are now 6 versions of this song on my Viking playlist. All very different yet all, to my mind, epic in their own way
This reaction was AWESOME! Valhalla Calling was my first tumble in the rabbithole that is Voiceplay and Geoff. After I saw this, I was hooked! LOVE seeing you react to it 😂
Everyone was epic in this and I can't choose who to spotlight. Layne killing the perc, Cesar channeling his inner warrior, Eli the rock god, Geoff the earthquake with THREE B0s, or J and those bars. Eli did a ton of production work on this and Layne's arranging was jaw dropping. I'm kinda thinking it would be smart to invest in CPR equipment for any future songs. This is savage, pun intended. I would love to see the MIDI on this to see all the layers my ear can't catch even with repeated listening.
I am just like you Dave. Bass will ALWAYS have my heart. You just gotta have it WAY down deep with a good bass voice in the mix. ❤ Also, Dave, you are my FAVORITE person to watch for reactions. Your analysis and ability to look at ALL aspects of a song is so amazing unto its own. An absolute production analyst/performance master analyzing technician you are, Dave!
He was invited to do a tour with the USO and felt that was something he could not turn down, they went over the details in one of their behind the scenes videos just after he left.
They weren’t lip synching it, they were actually singing the song with the studio version overlay on top. 2:54 Notice Geoff’s twisted little smile when he’s going absolutely Viking subterranean. And then after J. None appears in silhouette in the doorway 7:28 (BTW Lane did the creaking door sound himself) Geoff raises his tankard to him in respect. Loved your reaction!
I was waiting for your reaction, you always deliver very nice ones, and I love to watch you react to this kind of songs... And after watching the Voiceplay video the first time, I knew it would blow you away. 😅 This video, anyway, IMHO, raises the bar AGAIN. They're doing it EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I don't know what they'll be doing at the end of the year at this pace, but heck am I curious! 😁 One thing that hits me is that ALL THEM seem to improve time after time. Cesar "ferocious" grit was a nice surprise. Eli was in "full Rock God mode". Layne was making sounds I never thought possible. Geoff hit B0, not only at the beginning, but ,if I'm not mistaken, THREE times (the other two are a bit "hidden" in the TON of incredible vocal stuff that's happening at any given time). And J None... Well, he's J Noneing all over the place, and that rap! 😱 Makes me want to switch to Norge creed and worship Odin 😅. See you next time! And remember Geoff is said to be releasing his new video on Friday 😉
An epic voices arrangement way out there, Dave love ur approach of explain always ur reaction is the best, let me tell u boy i have seen a lots of others, u are funny at the same time, from Caribbean Island U.S. Puerto Rico Blessings to you , family and friends Amen
Perfection! It doesn't get any better than this! No other acappella group can touch them. Everything they put into all of their videos! Absolutely amazing! A masterpiece! Love all of your voiceplay reactions! My favorite part - bass, of course.
Thank you, I have listened to this song several times but because of your analysis I heard more of the sounds in the texture of the song. Expanding my appreciation of music that I already loved. Thank you very much
Every time I hear a new Voiceplay song, I think "This is the best they've ever done, they can't possibly top this..." And then they do top it, and some. But this one... HOW could they ever top this one? There's no more sky above this one, it's only ceiling! They'd have to break something.... reality maybe...!
You said they make it their own. To me, that is what music is all about. Theme and variation. Good music has so much in it that no performance can capture it all. One of the reasons I come to your reactions is that you respond to each piece on it's own. Talking about how that performance speaks to you. I knew you would like the rap. And I was surprised at how well it fit the Viking theme. Be well.
Odin, Thor, Loki, Freya, Frigga and all the rest of the Norse gods and goddesses will welcome these amazing gentlemen into Valhalla any day! SKOL and Hail the Travelers! To Valhalla
Yes, he did one with Peyton and then they did a trio with Eric Holloway. If you check out the comments on Voiceplay's post, Gavin (Miracle of Sound) left them a comment on what he thought.
I can't even..........! This is absolutely EPIC! And for some oddly mindblowing reason I don't even understand, I'm finding myself wishing to hear Angelina Jordan or Aurora (both from Norwegian Viking country) cover this song!
I love that Eli, Cesar, and J added that gritty vocal texture. We all know Geoff can do that, but they really brought it to the upper registers. Layne was amazing. J tapping!!!!!!
The first time I watched this it was like being under attack but with music. So much was happening that you need a moment to process all of it. And they were not holding back. Loved it
Your reactions always give me goosebumps all over again after the the first ones from the drop of the cover. I love to see people who love and feel music as much as I do!
Geoff was singing several B0 subharmonics, holding it in the beginning for about 15 seconds, and for around12 seconds later on. And Eli was throwing B4s around as if there were normal talking, also holding the one for about 12 seconds with Geoff under the rap. The rap was written by Alfredo Austin. This is not a green screen video, but rather it was shot in a volume studio (like The Mandalorian), in front of a 155 ft wide, 26 ft tall LED screen.
Thank you for your reactions, you are the reason that I have been looking at music differently. You are a amazing reactor and I like your animated personality
I think this is a welcome back for J.Non - he starts out all by himself but hears the others calling him. He approaches the doors, goes through and joins the rest of the viking group.
My favorite moment is when Caesar and Geoff are going back and forth. Ceasar is distant and echoing like he's the embodiment of the celestial realm calling out to the warriors on Midgard who answer back the call.
OK, Dave..... There are lots of good reactors in youtubeland. We all know that. BUT.... you are, without a doubt, my very favorite of them all. I look forward to every reaction you do, but I especially love the VoicePlay reactions. The comments, the faces, the insights... the SMILES. You never fail to make my day. Please never stop!
“Huh?” I was a little late to the live drop and came in right as they reached that synth-sounding passage, and that’s pretty much what I thought. I had to double check that I was listening to Voiceplay. 😊 “J. None come back.” YES!!!! Two years we have to wait-aaaghh! The acting in this is so amazing. I already knew Eli was terrific, but now Cesar brought in his berserker-everybody just crushed it. Great reaction-I always look forward to yours. ❤

Yes! There’s just something about J’s voice that no one can touch, and it just adds the perfect piece to their dynamic.
They need Omar and J None for the absolute epic line up
Totally agree!!! The dream team!
Why does it have to be five people though? Just put Omar in there too! Would be even better

By Vikings for VIKINGS!!!! We shall have you on our ship Dave! Get ready to raid!
The theater kids of acapella did it again! EPIC! 🔥🤯💯🔥🤯💯
Cesar's wolf was howling on this one! LOVED it - and reusing Jose's cloak from "My Mother Told Me".
Yes, he did one with Peyton and then they did a trio with Eric Holloway. If you check out the comments on Voiceplay's post, Gavin (Miracle of Sound) left them a comment on what he thought.
Dave, I simply enjoy how much you get intot he music with every reaction you do!
They killed it as usual!!!!❤❤❤
Voice play I tip my hat to all you guys, you smash anything you do out the park
all the faces you make make me smile each time i see your reactions
I can't even..........!
This is absolutely EPIC!
And for some oddly mindblowing reason I don't even understand, I'm finding myself wishing to hear Angelina Jordan or Aurora (both from Norwegian Viking country) cover this song!
I love that Eli, Cesar, and J added that gritty vocal texture. We all know Geoff can do that, but they really brought it to the upper registers. Layne was amazing. J tapping!!!!!!
This is sickingly AWESOME. The harmony is ridiculous. This is their new top video. Move over, Hoist the Colours.
The first time I watched this it was like being under attack but with music. So much was happening that you need a moment to process all of it. And they were not holding back. Loved it
I can't get over this performance, man. Every 10 seconds something else surprises us more than the last. Great reaction--earned a sub from me!
Who are these guys? I'm frickin BLOWN AWAY. Those harmonies and how they blend WOW
I was waiting for your reaction for this video! I😁 awesome reaction as always 😊
Love to see how VoicePlay makes you so 'Giddy' Dave.....love your reactions.......>^^
I love this cover almost more than I like the original. For some reason, acapella is almost always better than with instruments.
It’s Layne.
Your reactions always give me goosebumps all over again after the the first ones from the drop of the cover. I love to see people who love and feel music as much as I do!
The ‘huhhh??’ After the dubstep drop was my exact reaction too 😂
I was so eager for your reaction to this. You and VoicePlay never disappoint.
Valhalla Calling is now definitely lightning in a bottle.
knew you would love this one it’s amazing ❤🏴
I'll be right back, gotta add this to my Spotify playlist
This is one of those epic VoicePlay performances! Really gets your blood flowing! 🔥🔥🔥 Loved you're reaction, Dave ❤❤
Geoff taught Lane how to beat box. He’s the og for beatboxing too.
I think this is a welcome back for J.Non - he starts out all by himself but hears the others calling him. He approaches the doors, goes through and joins the rest of the viking group.
Holy crap. I'm still new to the group and this was outstanding!!
My favorite moment is when Caesar and Geoff are going back and forth. Ceasar is distant and echoing like he's the embodiment of the celestial realm calling out to the warriors on Midgard who answer back the call.
Knew I had to see your reaction to this. You're one of the only reactors I normally watch who knows flow.
The word epic was created for this piece.
Dave, I so love your reactions. Much love for being honest and heartfelt as you feel the music and share it with us.
The fact Eli was singing whole phrases in B4-D5(i think) from 7:08 is crazy
OK, Dave..... There are lots of good reactors in youtubeland. We all know that. BUT.... you are, without a doubt, my very favorite of them all. I look forward to every reaction you do, but I especially love the VoicePlay reactions. The comments, the faces, the insights... the SMILES. You never fail to make my day. Please never stop!
“Huh?” I was a little late to the live drop and came in right as they reached that synth-sounding passage, and that’s pretty much what I thought. I had to double check that I was listening to Voiceplay. 😊
“J. None come back.” YES!!!! Two years we have to wait-aaaghh!
The acting in this is so amazing. I already knew Eli was terrific, but now Cesar brought in his berserker-everybody just crushed it.
Great reaction-I always look forward to yours. ❤
LOVE how animated Caesar is! Why oh why hasn't Hollywood casting directors snatched any one of these guys for movie roles?
I knew this would break you, especially J None!! This was epic in every way!
I was kinda waiting you to rip your headphones off and go, "I'm done!"
I was just wondering how Dave was going to handle this one! You didn't disappoint us! I don't know how they do it but they stunned us yet again.😊
@10:10 those headphones looked awfully heavy for a second 😂 what an emotional ride
