I just found your channel yesterday I appreciate how fast you just get to the point and end the video. I’m new to DR and I didn’t know there are more ways to adjust your clips before adding luts to it. Thanks for sharing I’ve gain much knowledge from these videos 🍊
Good stuff, man!! A quick tip when you're adjusting the HDR zones - if you hit SHIFT+H, it'll show only that range of values in the viewer, kind of like when you use the qualifier.
Thank you! And yep I know it. I did record that in this video but it didn’t make the cut. But good tip for those that don’t know. Let’s you dial it in more easily.
@cammackey ah I missed it! I was in and out. Thanks man, love RUclips. So much fun. Excited to see where you go too. Keep up the great work and hit me up if you’re ever in NYC!
Definitely similar to curves. I feel a lot of the controls in davinci are similar/achievable with other tools but the feeling is different and more “tunable” feeling at times.
Big fan of adjusting curves but for low contrast clips - things can get wonky quickly and have been finding the HDR wheels easier to use especially when you can dial in your exact zone. Switched to davinci resolve from premiere pro and have absolutely loved it
4:35 my first guess was Canon K35/Genesis G35 but this transition in bokeh from her right hand holding phone to background also resembles soviet m42 optics. But contrast and sharpness seems superior to old constructions :) So I'll say Genesis G35
Is that second lens a Soviet Helios? Possibly re-housed/IronGlass? Also, you are quickly turning into my go-to for Resolve knowledge - thanks for all you do Blaine!
Question, does the dynamic range of your camera affect the end results of these methods? Could the image be noisier if the camera you used had a lower dynamic range?
Good question. Depends on camera. On most modern cameras, if you shoot as bright as possible without blowing it out, you will yeild a cleaner image (bc you bring things down in post). Easier said than done.. I’ve been shooting a lot with an insta360, and it definitely benefits from a hotter exposure, but it’s slightly harder to monitor and really dial it in. Same with GoPro. A lower dynamic range, from a modern camera, doesn’t matter all that much in most scenarios. It won’t necessarily create more noise. One good test is to put the camera on a tripod and shoot a bunch of different settings in the same scenario. This is when answers start to reveal themselves.
My wheels do not respond the same as yours. For example, when I drag the exposure in the HDR Wheels, the entire highlight area is pulled down without detail being restored, similar to the highlights bar in the Primary wheels. The only thing that seems to work for me is Curves, but instead of pulling down at the top, I have to pull down right in the middle, which is really weird.
@@BlaineWestropp1 Thank you for your respond. My camera is BMPCC 4K, and I edit on a Mac, how to map gamma and color space? I saw in your video and tried searching for how to do it but couldn't find it
There are definitely a few things you can do to help out with that depending on the shot. Adding a combo of glow and using the soft clip in resolve can improve it a little bit.
Working with CST from log to linear and then adjusting gamma in curves and going back to log and adding camera lut on end node. Am I doing something wrong?
In order for me to properly make these I may need 5 shots from you, or 2, one at 0 and one at -2, by quartering shutter in controlled lighting. Are you in the discord?
aint nothin wrong with LGG. I find myself using different techniques for different types of scenes. also.. guess again. hint: I dont think you can buy it!
Hey thanks. If you click the 3 dots in the top right of your HDR wheels panel, you can select your camera’s color space and gamma. Let me know if you need assistance!
It’s entirely possible, but at the moment I still prefer to edit in premiere. I can move really fast there, and some things like nudging and frame by frame finessing I find better in premiere.
When in the HDR wheel panel, click the 3 dots in the top right of the panel. Towards the bottom you will see a color space gamma options. Set each of these to your camera settings. When you do this the global wheel will adjust exposure extremely closely to how exposure is set in camera.
5:57 another neat “trick” is to use the highlight feature to select the range for the hdr highlight wheel. Works for the other wheels as well of course.
Calling it that this channel is going to be huge less than a year from now. Blaine knows his shit 💯

Gah dang you beat me to it. Crazy more people aren’t utilizing this. I use to have to feather in qualifiers and use curves to stretch that DR

That hdr wave graph is next level. I literally didn’t know it existed until now
Now you know! It’s a great tool!
Zone graph, aha! Giving that additional control over the hdr wheel makes it way more similar to curves, but perhaps a little easier to dial in.

Great video man. I use the qualifier and the hdr wheels. Going to try your techniques. Thanks

thanks for the solid input! regarding the lens - was it a Zenit Selena 58mm f/1.9 ?
very good guess. it wasn't specifically this lens, but after some googling im wondering if it is a rehoused version of this lens...
Is that second lens a Soviet Helios? Possibly re-housed/IronGlass?
Also, you are quickly turning into my go-to for Resolve knowledge - thanks for all you do Blaine!
hey thanks so much! more to come. guess again on that lens though!
Great advice and comparison, super easy takeaways. On the lens, it's not the Angenieux 28-70 Allegro is it?
Thank you. It’s not that lens. It’s not a zoom. But if the angenieux looks like that I may need to get my hands on it..
Awesome 👍👍
Thanks 🤗

@@BlaineWestropp1 Thank you for your respond. My camera is BMPCC 4K, and I edit on a Mac, how to map gamma and color space? I saw in your video and tried searching for how to do it but couldn't find it
i would be interested in a way to soften hightlights you lost. if you blew up your highlights in the shot
There are definitely a few things you can do to help out with that depending on the shot. Adding a combo of glow and using the soft clip in resolve can improve it a little bit.
@@BlaineWestropp1what exactly is soft clip?😊
Amazing man! Do you need to shoot ProRes 4444 for this kind of flexibility?
No. As long as you aren’t clipping your highlights your good to bring them down a little like how you see in this video.
For the algorithm 💪🏻💪🏻

is it an arri look lens set at like a detune level of 3 or so?
Yes :) can’t remember the tuning. Nice eye!
What do you mean by mapping HDR wheels to camera color space & gamma?
In the HDR panel click the 3 dots top right. Select your camera’s CS and gamma. Your HDR node should be before any CSTs or 709 conversions.
Should be fine using DWG(timeline). So long as you're using the panel in a bigger bucket than deliverable color space.@@BlaineWestropp1
Yes I think so. I’m not using DWG timeline though and in my case, they need to be mapped!

3 dot on top right of hdr wheels - drop down menu pops up and change color space to your camera and gamma to your camera.
why never a secondary?
To keep things simple really.. just a look at some of the tools and how they make the image react before any other nodes.
what monitor do you edit on?
MacBook Pro m2 max with a Sony pvm a250. Sometimes I go laptop only. Sometimes I use a 10 year old cheap dell monitor.
