There is a deep closeness between Dean Martin and his children and shows that they are all honorable.
It also shows that he was great father.
Not one of them thought of writing a derogatory book to cash in.
Deana Martin said, "Don't expect any "Daddie Dearest" revelations from any of us."

When I went to school in Las Vegas, I got to meet Mr. Sinatra & Totie Fields & Mr. Sinatra was also very kind to me. I regret moving from Las Vegas & wished I had met Mr. Martin.
Mr. Sinatra was my favorite singer but Dean did it effortlessly & he was my second favorite.
Today when I hear God awful music over speakers by singers who really can't sing, I say to people :
" Get rid of the crap and put on some Sinatra or Dean Martin or Sammy ( or anyone who knew how to sing and carry a tune & not rely on rhythm or the beating of drums or overly loud base. ) "
I miss all 3 of these talented men so very much and being OLD school, I have many of their cds but back then I had so many of their records.

I have been trying to find the episode were Deana sings her first single Baby, I See You" and "The Bottom Of Your Mind". When I was a young man working on a parking lot in Hollywood, (trying to make it as a songwriter) producer Lee Hazlewood came on my lot, going to the bank across the street. I noticed he had some records on the car seat, so I told him I was a songwriter and asked if he might be looking for some original songs. He said, Well, give me a copy, I'd be happy to give them a listen. Next time he came in I gave him some demos and a few days later, when I came to work, he was waiting for me. He said, Bob, we're recording your songs today with Deana Martin! I about dropped dead! A month later someone had given me some tickets to the Dean Martin Show and amazingly she was the guest star and preformed both these songs. My wife and I got to meet her afterwards, but I was never able to get a copy of the episode. Would love to have the video for posterity, but can't find it anywhere up here, or elsewhere . If somebody comes across it, please let me know. Been trying to find it for some time. Much thanks, BC Bobcorso27@yahoo.com

Dean was the epitome of cool, he had swagger before punks knew what swagger was... charming, funny, talented, and didn't give a rat's ass who didn't approve of his lifestyle, because even his lifestyle was a ruse... he didn't drink as hard as was portrayed, although he promoted that image for comedy content (until he started drinking heavily later in his life). He was the smoothest of the smooth.

the truth is dean martin was a far far bigger drinker than Sinatra...who drank the night away after every show...seldom quitting till 5...6...7 am!...the next day...if you look at how frail dean was as he got older..you are seeing the end result of what a person looks like after drinking like a fish his whole life.....yes..his son...the only child he ever cared about.......killing him self...made him worse....but in the end he was just a shadow of what he had been Sinatra....calling him out for throwing a LIT CIGARETTE INTO THE AUDIENCE.....is what made dean martin quit the show with him frank and sammy....he just didnt care about anything...which is exactly the way he lived his entire life

Im about half way through her book "memories are made of this" Dean Martin through his daughters eyes. Dean broke her mothers heart. Her mother Betty was as in love with her dad as much as a women could ever be but Dean left her for a more attractive women who he fell in love with. It didn't take much because Jeanne was the kind of girl my dad used to say "you fell in love with as soon as you see her" because of her beauty. It was easy after a while for Deana to forget her real mom after the privilege, the homes, the celebrities that came with living with dad and his new bride. How awful it had to be for Betty to loose her children who she loved dearly not just from one household to another but to lose them from the children not wanting her anymore. From what I have gathered so far Deana has never been for want for anything that money could buy and had never known the heartache of those far less fortunate, heartache attached to having nothing.

I understand what you're saying, but you can't really blame the children for the situation they found themselves in and though it's true that they didn't want for anything financially after Dean and Jeannie gained custody of them, they did have a relatively hard time before that because Betty spent a lot of the alimony and child maintenance Dean paid her on drinking and partying. I don't know how far you have got in her book, but Deana writes quite honestly about the fact that they often moved house because Betty couldn't pay the rent, and how each move also meant another change of school and trying to make new friends each time. And though the divorce was acrimonious and was obviously heartbreaking for Betty, it seems that for a long while she was in denial and kept hoping that Dean would eventually come back to her. But many marriages break up when one or the other partner meets someone else and as sad as it is, many mothers manage to pull themselves together and carry on to make some kind of life for the sake of their children. It would seem that Betty wasn't strong enough to cope and to me it's an indication of how bad things had become that Dean and Jeannie were eventually granted custody of the children at a time when it was practically unheard of for the father to get custody.

So did she have a drinking problem when they met? Was the drinking because Dean was out cheating on her? Jerry Lewis was another who was not faithful in his marriage either. So her mother was not capable of taking care of them any more but Jeanne is?? Jeanne had a nanny raise her kids.

Yes she does. Finally the story of the first family got told and I thank her for it. All I ever heard for years was Jeanne, Jeanne, Jeanne, and then for a few minutes--Cathy Hawn Martin--and both sets of kids. And since I was always a Martin fan, I always wondered "well what about his first wife?" So I thank her for writing it.

I have read Deana Martins book "Memories are made of this" it seems that you may have mixed up the facts anout Deanas mother Betty, the lady had an alcoholi problem, she loved her children dearly, but alcohol took over, the children were being neglected to a certain extent, and luckly Jeanie took over and did a good job as a far as I understand, I felt very sorry for his first wife but she was in no state to bring up her and Deans children.

great personality and interview. She is so normal. The one thing that bugged me about Dean Martin is he would never act normal - always joking and in character. Even Don Rickles would be serious and wax philosophical and sentimental sometimes.

I ran the job to tear down the old Chelsen's Restaurant, where the Rat pack used to play. They had their own little night club upstairs and an apartment out back.
