The Short List:
2 hours 19 minutes and 37 seconds
Think this is a response to antiasian violence. A bit overdone and indirect,of no import to current events honestly. Another rags to riches porn story. Any 2 hr vice doc normally gets millions.
I clicked thinking it was about food but learnt abt history of cambodia through stories. Nicely done!
There’s a very eye opening movie called ‘first they killed my father’, it’s very sad but we should all educate ourselves about this war.. in my opinion
This is underrated.

How can this has less than 1M views?! This is outrageous! LOL
This is one of the most eye opening documentaries I've ever seen. Really a job well done!
They worked their asses off. They deserve it.
Hard work pays off
I am craving for donut now, this documentary really deserves Oscar. Thank you Vice for presenting us this epic!

I'm in serious tears watching this. Being from a neighboring country, Thailand, this modern history is so relatable to me! Thank you Vice for makking this beautiful story of hope and hard work.
Nice documentary , couldn't afford to miss even a second.I guess a movie about Ted and the others is forthcoming.
Im watching in parts since its so long. It’s one of the best videos, I’ve seen this year Im so full of different emotions watching it.
This is such a beautiful amalgamation of donuts, history and immigrants. This is what immigration can do, don't build walls, build bridges. We need more of these beautiful and heartfelt stories coming through and being spoken about ❤️
Build bridges...of food! Best way to get to know cultures
@@nizamaroth underrated comment
What a lovely documentary. So many heartbreaking stories amalgamated. Also, I am now craving donut(s). Love the Short List - thank you Suroosh and team!
Incredible film, definitely checking out the rest from the Short List now.
Great movie with meaningful content. Thank you Vice!
As always, great work, Vice. They're like so many people in our lives, extraordinary and everyday.
Agreed, brother. With everything you said, except when you said: "As always". They have an agenda that is clear and have shown it trough many lies in their docu's and other material. Kind regards from your brother, koen.
I am so proud of how they've come this far. I didn't expect the plot twist; the story is so so interesting and meaningful.
Shout out to the crews behind this film from Cambodia កម្ពុជា
Great doc. Im glued till the end.
This was truly the best most beautiful documentary film ive seen in a long time at the middle of the film i cried tears of joy wich hasnt happened ever while watching a documentary and then the downfall of ted. What a ride thanks to all involved and love to all cambodians who built this great empire. Love and peace!

Dang, his life story is like a movie, amazing!
A beautiful story of hope, determination, family, opportunity, adversity and love
Such an amazing documentary. So inspiring in so many ways.
wow Vice finally brings out a proper documentary
Really good stories, interesting and inspiring people... I was just curious why donuts shops in California became synonymous with Cambodians. Then I stayed for the colorful personalities involved. The footage of Ford's speech on immigrants is a nice surprise. It is nice to remember that there was a time that America used to welcome Asian immigrants wholesale. The interview of the producer/cinematographer on the latter part of the documentary is enlightening. Thanks for making this documentary.
Excellent work.
at first i missed clicked it.. but every minutes are amazing and inspirational...
beautifully done..thank you Vice. thank you Alice.
There is an old Chinese saying: the first generation made the money. The second generation managed the money. And the third generation squandered it. That happens when you don't want your children and grandchildren to work as hard as you do.
Made me think deep. Thanks for sharing.
The donut king married a rich government girl and almost lost all the money gambling in first generation, he also had very cheap labor. Pol Pot took over the cambodia with chinese support. The quote doesnt make sense for this video and has been said by others just not chinese.
I paused the documentary midway, ordered donuts and ate them. This documentary deserves a watch with donut.
Thank you for this inspiring story...
im cryinggg, what a beautiful story ❤❤😢
your back in track again! vice!
beautifully documented :)
Good one Alice absolutely amazing

The 2 million mansion probably worth 20 times now .

A good wife is the pillar of any home
Dam now I need a donut!
Alice Gu is a genius.
Beautiful story and film. Combines life struggle, Asian life, living the dreams, and business. Pity some of the stories didn't end like a fairy tale.
because most life stories dont.. sorry to burst your bubble.
Very inspiring and remarkable documentary film 🎥 of immigrants...
it was worth the time 😌
Gordon ramsay quote "Dont microwave the salad you fucking doughnut"

Most relevant film for Asian Americans in the current times.
i need to make good donuts, idk why i enjoyed that so much. that made my day

Did I just watch the Vice version of Casino ?
this was the America I once respected.
How do you talk about donut for 2 hours?
I'm glad people cared for the refugees
im in the US and this video was blocked in my region why? had to use a vpn
1975: no one had even seen asians in orange county
present day: asian invasion in California😂😂😁
Why do I need a VPN just to watch this video..
Amazin'
Be loyal and don't gamble children.
so nobody gonna comment about that general army guy..he is like Jesus...gosh
Ted's the man! Hard past.
ford was so cool for that
Now i want to eat donut
Great documentary. This was the honor and pride of being an American: that others would die to go there rather than anywhere else. These are the immigrants and millions before them that made America great. America. You’ve lost your spirit the day you forgot this. Never to be great again until you remember and change your attitude.
❤
Very good documentary. Well-made. The story of the Donut King is inspirational, but some of the shrewd things that he did, frankly, turned me off.
Its in the taste, not the brand.
Will definitely visit your store. Inshallah
You should also watch "first they killed my father" it's all about the Cambodian Genocide during the Khmer Rouge
Suroosh and Shane sounds exactly the same it's almost creepy.
Is this the "Rich Dad" from the book?
This is what the real "Living the American Dream" looks like ...
work till you drop and then get robbed by police when you are down?
@@emcee1337 i don't know....i'm just sayin' that this is what most people used to dreamed of it
Times have changed. Last time I spent 45 days straight hidden under a girl's bed I was called creepy :/
What happen to Shane?? Where's Shane?????
Who loves donuts
There is no place for humans like America.. God bless this awesome land and the kind American people..
Why does the only non-English speaking guy speaking Mandarin? Is he Chinese-Cambodian? Just wondering.
This is sad to loose it all because of a gambling addiction!
