Big Pharma - How much power do drug companies have? | DW Documentary

  • The pharmaceutical industry exerts a huge amount of influence on health policy. Some companies develop highly profitable drugs with public money, while others have been found to have covered up serious side effects.
The fight against Covid-19 is further fueling the greed of pharmaceutical companies. Does the industry’s influence threaten public health systems?
The industry has seen major changes in the last decade. Most of the world’s pharmaceuticals are produced by a handful of large corporations, so-called Big Pharma. They’re richer and more powerful than ever. In some cases, they can even call the shots on governmental health policies.
This documentary is the result of more than a year of research, and brings together patients, whistleblowers, lawyers, doctors and politicians, as well as representatives of the industry. Large laboratories are accused of concealing or downplaying research results to maintain their monopolies. Take the manufacturer Sanofi, whose epilepsy drug Depakine triggered a scandal throughout Europe. In the US, Johnson & Johnson has had to stand trial for driving millions of people into opioid addiction. And Novartis is one of several companies now facing huge fines over improper practices in the treatment of macular degeneration, an eye disease.
The pharmaceutical industry gets support from influential doctors. But only one-fifth of German doctors declare what they receive from drug companies. As the world battles the Coronavirus pandemic, this documentary also looks at the lobbying efforts of manufacturer Gilead, as it seeks approval for a promising drug developed largely with public money. Every company is vying to find the next miracle treatment that will help it succeed against the competition.

They make themselves look good by blaming the people they kill. also when people cry out for help in various ways, they get abused for it and that makes these so-called medical professionals look good as well. so it's okay to abuse someone who wants help but when people tell doctors to take responsibility and actually try to help these people, the doctors get all offended. when the suicide rate goes up, it's never the doctors fault. this is why you'll never see me go to a doctor. I will also never be honest because honesty gets you into more trouble. If I don't ask for help, I am less likely to be abused. And if I get away with undoing my life, I won't be tortured for attempting to escape a system that won't actually help me if I do keep my life. I don't know how psychiatrists think that physical torture will make people want to live, but anyway... whenever anybody tells me that violence is never the answer, I tell them to try saying that to a doctor Who uses violence every single day to silence everybody.

I was a pharmacy tech in the USA for almost a year before i couldnt take it anymore. I worked in an area which had 50% of children in the local schools on free and reduced lunch, and the other half driving suburbans to and from their corporate job and $500,000 home. Elserly patients paying $600 for insulin when insurance lapsed. Impoverished patients on medicaid choosing which medications to get that month because they were only allowed a certain number. Parents coming from the ER asking which medications are "really" necessary because the ER visit itself was already expensive. heart breaking. soul crushing. didnt make it very long at that job.

A friend’s father caught hep c as a detective saving a life. He didn’t even think twice about this act. He was just doing his job. When his condition became grave many years down the line, he had to battle with insurance companies for assistance in covering the treatment. While he eventually did win, by the time he did it was far too late. He ultimately lost his fight. It is hard to not be disgusted about this.

Everything else went up in price too since the Pandemic. A regular take out for a single bowl of noodles used to be 9 dollars dine in, to 25 dollars delivery and 15% reduction in portion. Why? The system put a strain on everyone and the system did not help the small businesses so the businesses needed their customers to pay extra for a bowl of noodles so the business owner may stay a little more afloat.
If you thought making your own bowl of noodle is more economical, guess again, everything in the grocery stores have also jacked up their prices. What used to cost 1 dollar a bowl to make at home is now 8 dollars.

To me, the crazy part is that the research is publicly funded, but the profits are kept private. The companies say they deserve to charge such high prices, because they "take on the risk" of doing research which might not pan out. Except, much of the the research is not actually done by them, but rather universities. And the "risk" very often does pan out. Their argument is specious. The way to "regulate" this is to stop granting them such vast monopolies on these technologies. These legal monopolies are called patents. Patent law is not handed down to us on stone tablets. We can, indeed must, engineer them to maximize public value. Currently, they are mostly maximizing private value. By definition, patent law is buggy.

I listened to another documentary earlier about this topic. Granted it was a much older one, but it mentioned something interesting. They questioned some pharmaceutical companies about why the prices were so high and their response was part of it was to cover their research costs. But the American doctor they were questioning, the former editor-in-chief, says they outsource their research, or rather, buy the rights to the drug from independent labs that are essentially government funded (grant money). You have to wonder if back in the 90s and early 2000s, if that's what these companies meant by "cover their research costs." To regain what they spent on acquiring the drug in the first place.

Did the ousted companies get the option to tell their side of the story? Well after 30 min they asked 1 company to answer a couple questions, with the rest of the 42 min devoted to people thrashing them. Overall this is as one sided as any other documentary. Its just a side you happen to agree with(you and me both) so you don´t notice the obvious bias. This documentary was specifically made to expose certain methods and actions that the makers of the documentary(along with everyone else of course) obviously where against. Also literally: we could do anything, anything, to lift disabled people out of poverty, that literally is a choice because we give plenty of tax breaks to rich corporations who don't need money, poverty is literally a policy choice.
Illness... especially when you've already proven that it interferes with your ability to work... is not a crime, is it?

Big Pharma is one reason why American healthcare costs are totally out of control. Our insurance rates go up because of the high drug prices. My husband has high blood pressure and has had to change his medications 3 times in the past 5 years because the drug company changed their formulary just a tiny bit and then remarketed it as a new drug, meaning they could charge a fortune and that our insurance would no longer cover it. The VA is the worst offender. I'm pretty sure they have contracts with the major pharmaceutical companies because they ladle out the more expensive brand-name drugs like candy on Halloween. That's your taxes, people.
I don't like the idea of government-run healthcare, not only because of the massive taxes on everything, but there's the long waits, and the government decides who gets what. But too many of the younger generation is used to getting things handed to them, and I imagine that's where we're headed. Nothing is free. Nothing.

Pharmaceutics are necessary in medicine, but the goal should be on treatment outcomes, not monetary gain. Ethically, I think it is incorrect to push one medication over another, basing choice off of anything other than efficacy and limitations on side effects. First hand I have seen these pharmaceutical companies take ahold of physicians, and allow the physician to make choices for patients that may not be what is in the patients best interest. Many pharmaceutical companies will come into a doctor’s office, bribe them with food or other benefits, and tell the doctor why their product is better than another. This would be completely fine if their product was actually better than others, or was to show better efficacy and the treatment is what is needed by the patient, but this all too often is not the case. Many treatments are given to patients, or even pushed on patients for monetary gain on the physicians part. I can see why physicians are coerced to do so, they may only have to apply a specific item, or inject a specific solution which may take them 5 minutes, and provide them with hundreds of dollars just for using that companies product. Would the physician have used this product for the patient, if there was no benefit to themselves, or is the doctor pushing these products and finding ways this could benefit the patient just for self-gain. It is a hard question to ask yourself, but a the end of the day it comes down to what is best for the patient,. I think it is ethically immoral to do something, or provide a service that you would not do otherwise, unless there is a financial gain for the provider. Picking one medication over another due to its effects for the patient are one thing, but if there is any persuasion that benefits anyone other than the patient, there is a problem. Drug companies find ways to push their product, which at the end of the day is their main goal, as they are not the ones who should be advocating for the patient. We have seen this in recent history, with the race for the COVID vaccine. Different companies, all racing to make their product to sell to the millions of people who were required to get it. I think it is immoral to have people choose which source they must get their medication from, and for the common person this may be a very hard choice. Today, you will see pharmaceutical companies making a medication where many people suffer from side effects from their product, and then that same company will have another product to fix the side effects that their product is causing. This to me, seems like a monopoly, and hurts nobody else but the consumer, who may be a consumer based off necessity, or medical need.

Disabled people exist and have a right to healthcare even if they aren't perfect. That's why we have things like electricity and indoor plumbing and we've decided as a society that people, in the abstract, shouldn't die from lack of healthcare, it would be great if we could follow up on our abstract ideals. Just wondering when Americans are going to realize that literally having to hold on to a job for healthcare is actual slavery and the very opposite of what freedom is.

I'm process engineer in one of biopharma companies. Actually this video is showing slightly manipulated picture:
    1. There is a difference between US and EU market due to different approach to health care. This is later connected with the drug market regulation and prices.
In Europe it is more regulated. It cannot be simply generalised. That maybe explains in 23 minute "in Europe lucentis price was half as in US". So US people - don't forget to be mad also on your government and the free market, one of the things US is recognised for.
2.in 24 minute "Roche or Novartis don't like the product they sell is used for different purpose". The drugs are licenced for certain type of disease because only for this disease they presented the clinical data to the authorities ensuring the product is SAFE. They won't be able to take responsibility if what they sell is missused. I'm surprised that professionals in 24th minute and 25th minute of video are suprised that companies ask about it.
    3. Lucentis and Avastin are slightly different and there were found risks when clinical trials were performed for Avasrin for AMD ( I googled why it is not filled for licence).
Also aseptic fill of prefilled syringe is quite a burden of cost for manufacturers. But then you are ensured the drug injected into your eye is sterile. If doctors do it in improper conditions they can contaminate the shot...
    4. Novartis treatment costs that much becuase quality of manufactured product cost a lot, because they need to invest to innovate the manufacturing to be able to provide product to more patients. Currently most likely it is around 40-50 patients a month...also to maintain highly skilled and knowledgeable personnel to manufacture the treatment is also quite expensive.
5 Also manufacturing place makes a difference, price will be different if it will be manufactured I.e. in India and US because also of employees salaries....it also depends which standards needs to be fulfilled for drug manufacturing (I.e. some countries have a bit more loose regulations).
I can go on and on.
I know how much does it cost to prepare for any authority audit (I.e.FDA).
So from my perspective , having industry on-floor knowledge , this video is rather slightly biased.

When money speaks nobody is interested in the grammar. I like the time line of this documentary. Some drugs are so expensive; that, if you want your damaged liver to be treated with an expensive drug; then you will have first to sell off your kidneys to afford that drug. Every drug company wants to have a big piece from the same pie.

Depending on your problem a Liver can be cured. For example if you have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease you just need to avoid vegetable oils (Which are in 65% of all foods) and your NAFLD will go away.

@@cautarepvp2079 - Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.
There used to be Alchoholic Fatty Liver Disease and a bunch of grannies were turning up at the hospital with similar problems. The docs thought "yeah right. I think granny is hitting the sauce hard"
It happened so many times that it was looked into and they realized that no these people were telling the truth. So how did they get this disease? It was unheard of until the 80's or 90's I think.
It is like type 2 Diabetes. It used to be called Adult onset Diabetes but so many kids started coming down with the problem that the name was changed.
Most of these diseases were rare if not never seen before.
