I just purchased a sleeping bag liner, and sleeping bag, but now need a tarp to sleep under when camping out. The sleeping bag is designed for cold weather, and so is the liner I got. It looks like you all are ready to camp out in the Rockies and I hope you all have the proper cookware to eat good while camping out as well. I need to get a fishing kit to have in my backpack since I don't know where my other backpack is with the gear in it.
A couple of those I wouldn't bring because they are strictly for sleeping. For instance, instead of that sock thing, a pair of long underwear pants and a pack-able down or insulated jacket. If it's cold I can wear them in the bag and also in the cold morning when I get up.
Had the Aeros pillow, large, since last summer and love it both for car camping & backpacking. Static V is decent but not alot of traction, I tend to slide off if the tent is not level. Look for bags with "EN" ratings, those have atually been tested. Cot and rectangle bag for me car camping, air pad and mummy backpacking.
I haven't been camping for a few years, planning trip soon. I want to upgrade my old gear and going to use your recommendations. Will use your Amazon link when I'm ready. Thanks.
Thanks Aaron. I've been looking for some kind of sleeping pad and not found so many reviews on the different manufacturers so it was well timed that I stumbled on this video whilst catching up on some of the stuff I've missed. I've bought a few things now that I've watched you review, and whilst I don't always agree with everything you say (e.g. neck knives!), I have never regretted purchasing anything that you have reviewed. Hopefully the Klymit sleeping pad will work for me too. Hope all is well with you and your family.
That pillow fits perfectly in the hood of my Nemo sleeping bag. I recently switched to a quilt so I'm curious how it's going to work. May have to get the bigger one. Also been eyeing that exact pad since mine is not insulated. I sleep hot though so not sure if I'll get it.
the aeros pillows are amazing. I bought one in March and be using it 5 days a week no kidding and it works just as good today as the day I bought it great product.
Great vid man. I'm in Texas so we literally go with a kelty weekend wide mat, cocoon pillow and a Kelty blanket. I will def have to check out that V pad and that pillow.
Only thing I would have to disagree with is the Static V pad. I tend to slide off it easy and the biggest negative for me is that it just doesn't give me the back support I need. I'm a side sleeper as well and my last time out with this pad I felt like I spent the night sleeping on a rock pile.
Have you ever considered a goose down filled sleeping bag? They are pricey but they pack small and the temp ratings are awesome for the weight and size.
Nice set up, i rock something a bit similar. just dont have the heat sleeve. Also i believe the temp rating is bases on absolute perfect conditions, like no wind and what not aswell as the persone sleeping inside them, some members of the human faction sleep hotter then others and the reverse. i can personally say that ive slept in -5 weather in colorado with a 0 degree bag and slept quite well through the night and that was without a sleeping pad.
US MSS Sleep System. I have one and slept comfortably in 20 degree weather in a tee shirt and jeans with no socks and no sleeping pad. Also it is a 3 layer system. I only used the goretex bivy and the black bag which is rated to minus 10. I have another bag for the system which is the green patrol bag and it's good down to 30 degrees by itself. All 3 layers combined are recommended down to minus 30. Excellent sleep system, highly recommend it.
Wow Aaron...I mean, wow. When I first clicked on this vid "4 Parts To Sleep Better Outdoors", I was expecting to see you compiling four jagged rocks & then a trust fall directly down onto them & into sleepy-town...because that's how a MAN sleeps in out of doors. I personally can't sleep unless I'm on Tempurpedic, like a million dollar down pillow & a bazillion count Egyptian sheets, but my goodness brother, I expected more out of you. Thank you for the vid all the same - Scott Sherman
All I can say is checkout Wiggys. They make the best extreme cold weather gear in the world. Why you might ask, its because it all really works. I use their poncho liner and their 0* f degree Hunter bag and ground pad out under a tarp in rain and snow and even if I get a little wet I know i will sleep without any problems. I also have their -20*F hunter Rectangular bag and their -60* F Antarctica Rectangular bag for when I'm out in the real cold. I cant stand mummy bags and I'm a big man. I like a little space around me to be able to move in. If Im wet and cold I know I can climb into any of my bags and get warm and dry out. Try that in any other sleeping bag. Also I like that I can machine wash and dry my gear at my house. Just check Him out. I dont make any money or anything from recommending Wiggys. Just hope to help spread the word so people can get gear that really works.
Made a comment across YT about a new John-innovation, and you mention the sleeping mattress. Use/find/acquire a thin-thickness, closed-foam camp mattress (i.e. Seattle Thermarest), remove the useless back pad on the ruck. Using the cloth fabric over the mattress, sew in (2) zippers on the edges for a tri- or quad-folded mattress. Sew in a zipper onto the ruck pack, where the folded mattress resides, and provides the needed ruck back padding. Unzipping the outer zipper, you can unfold 1 portion of the mattress for an insulated (clean, warm, dry) seat, with the ruck as the seat back. Unzip further, and you can fold out an entire full-leg sit down mattress, or use as a sleep-upright mattress with the ruck as the seat back. Fully unzipping and removing the mattress from the ruck you have your sleeping mattress. Modifications making the mattress shorter and of smaller width (ULW cut downs) provides only the needed mattress weight and fit onto the ruck. Gives more ruck pack storage inside the bag.
My Klymit pads valve failed the second time that I used it. Because of this I had to pack up and hike off of Mt Baker at midnight. I was told that a few had been returned for this reason. It’s marketed for side sleepers, which I am, but if it doesn’t hold air, it’s junk. I was a bit suspect because it seemed inexpensive compared to other more proven brands. In my opinion they are junk. Buyer beware!
J Barrett I used to get ice cold feet with a 10 degree sleeping bag, dry wool socks, bivvy, etc in 40° and below, turns out I had critically low iron and blood pressure.
totes agree on that aeros pillow. incredible. works great in the hammock also.
Steven Peterson nice!!!
Thanks for the tips, been going around in circles trying to decide and this has helped me make the final decision!

I bought the climbit non insulated last Thanksgiving sale on Amazon for $13 I believe. Best thing I use on my cot.
nice setup!! I think the little sprout stole the show!! he is so cute!!

I own the same pillow and pad! Haven't been able to field test the pad yet, but the pillow has been working pretty well!

I can highly recommend those Sea to Summit pillows too, they're excellent.
The Static V is great. I would highly recommend it. It really is a great sleeping pad
Great review. Neat to see GT Jr. on the move!

M P thanks so much! That means a lot!!
gideonstactical No problem. Any chance you'll be reviewing the Cutjack with M390 in the future?

Looks like you have a great little helper there. Thanks for the vid
Agree as I also run most of this gear as well.
Prepared 2 Thrive nice!

Have you ever tried the sea to summit basecamp ?
Totally agree about the Klymit pad! Never slept better outdoors.
Thank you!
Thank you for the review.
I like your tarps. What are they?

John Poc I have, we get a lot of afternoon thunder storms in the Rockies and if you get those type of bags wet you are in big trouble.
Yup, I certainly don't want to experience that. Really enjoy your reviews! Greetings from Argentina
John Poc hey!!
John Poc awesome!!
John Poc agreed, I had a Marmot "Grouse" 650 down semi-rec 15° 2lb bag and I had it down to -15 with precautions...
Great video as always. Thanks for helping me in my search for good backpacking gear!
Aaron, where were you camping at in this video?
Love the channel! Thoughts on ITS skeletonized bottle holder? Need a good water bottle holder for ruck...
Cool Stuff. Love seeing Jr. & Tommie, Jr's I want to play too!😝
Great vid

Dude this is a great video.
When I camp in the Rockies, I take viagra so I don't roll down the mountain in my sleeping bag
Man look at that lil guy, man he's get'n big!.. Thanks for the gear info brother. God Bless...
Hey boss do you have a Sleeping bag you reccomend for EXTREMELY cold weather? Lime below 10 F. Thanks
