Rescue mission! Saving Pelicans!

  • Amira and I came across a couple of pelicans tangled up with fishing line in the mangroves while we were out paddleboarding. If we had not seen them, they would have remained there suffering and starving to death. When you're Aqua-Cultured, you naturally look after your aquatic friends, so we jumped into action and rescued them. Now they can live another day to catch fish. Watch all the way to the end to see how to handle a pelican if needed.

Have thoroughly enjoyed watching both of you and your work on the boat and with the birds. I "live" on the computer watching many boats and your blog is the most engaging. I am a young 72 year old living in an assisted care facility. Looking forward to many more of your fun and educational films. David Moman, indpls, In

My husband and I are getting ready to buy our first boat and in an effort to learn as much as possible we've been following various RUclips channels. I just want to let you know that yours is, by far, one of the most informative/helpful channels we've seen. Of course, we enjoy the "lifestyle" channels too but are getting so much value from your content and style. Thank you!

Aqua-Cultured - We’ll look forward to it! Coincidentally, my husband spent a week in your marina learning how to operate an m/v and saw your Defever. We stopped by several times to say hello in person but didn’t find you were onboard. Maybe next time!

Ohhhhh! Wes the dockmaster told me that someone stopped by to say hello to us. So sorry to have missed you, I have been traveling for work the past few weeks, and Amira must have been out somewhere. Hope to catch you the next time. We will be moving the boat back out to Madeira Beach this weekend for the Summer. So if you are out that way, shoot us a message.

It just dawned on me, Pelicans look like Sea Turkeys. Majestic in their own way.

That was wonderful! Wish more of us were around. Nice to know how to handle a pelican if the need arises. We are headed down your way and look at a couple of Defevers. Your boat is very nicely equipped! I mean, watermaker! Never had a boat with stabilizers since I worry about leaks or more maintenance. Naturally aspirated engines are also a better way to go. I really like the galley up style also. Do you have any tee shirts for sale?

Bob, very much appreciated! That's awesome, I can't recommend DeFever enough, and we were very lucky to come across this one. I wouldn't be too afraid of stabilizers, they really aren't that complicated, and they make a huge difference went out cruising. And my Seabrace Stabilizers are made up of aftermarket car parts for the most part, so you can get replacement equipment pretty much at any car parts store inexpensively. The naturally aspirated engines are also a welcomed feature after dealing with turbos. And the galley up in my opinion is the way to go, unless you like being secluded while washing dishes. We do have t-shirts for sale, in which we will have a website up soon to be able to sell from. But in the meantime, shoot us an email at refinedbywater@gmail.com, and we will get you the low down on the shirts.

The problem with discarded fishing line is everywhere people cast or fish. We were able to call for a rescue on a large waterfowl during our visit to a Florida park. The park was great except for all the discarded monofilament line caught up in the various foliage. Please clean up after yourself, you could be saving the life of one or even several area animals.

Absolutely, discarded fishing line is a little known horrible problem. Every little bit cleaned up makes a huge difference!

Thank you! No, but the volunteers and staff at the sanctuary move the birds from the overnight drop-off carriers in to the hospital first thing in the morning to administer fluids and food
