12 Inch 3 Jaw Lathe Chuck Made In China. How Good Is It?

- In this video we acquired a 12 Inch 3 jaw chuck at work that was made in China. I machined a older L2 spindle mount to fit the chuck to my everyday user Lathe. I wasn't sure what to expect from a Chuck that was made in China but was very happy with the results.
Glad it’s within your specs, the attention to detail and fit on assembly will reap rewards for a long time
It is always great to find out you have a good tool. Thanks for the video Gary.
Thanks Harold, I agree with you. Thanks for stopping by. Gary
I am also surprised how nice that chuck is. Pretty awesome Gary. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Doozer, If it did not have a tag saying it was made in China I would not of thought that's where it was made. Thanks for stopping by, Gary
I came over at oxtools suggestion. I am staying for the content.
You are doing what I am starting to do.
I have started with a post drill and am now looking for my next project probably a leg vise.
As I live in Australia it's all a little harder to find things to work on.
Thank you for your inspiration and sharing your skills
Oxtoolco sent me here. Enjoyed the video and am looking forward to going back in time to watcch some more of your interesting uploads.

I bought a 5C collett chuck from China and it is one of my favorite chucks. Great stuff Gary. Take care buddy
Hey Randy, Been using it for a week now and very happy with it. Thank you and stay safe, Gary
Thats great you didn't waste your time making the backing plate for the chuck ,nice job
wow you got lucky, I bought 2 chucks very cheap and ended up using for a boat anchor, thanks for sharing
Enjoyed...discussion/demonstration/build....nice
Thank you Chuck, I appreciate it. Gary
Nice chuck, great results.

Thank you, and that you for your time checking out my video. Gary
Well that was better than expected, clearly the QC inspector was on his coffee break.😉
I agree Chris, thanks for checking out the video. Gary
Hmm it's Chinese probably a tea break lol
I've got the same chuck on my sebastian lathe, love it. Had to grind the jaws but it's a very nice chuck.
Thank You Very Much, that was a great video.
Rodney, thank you very much I really appreciate it. Gary
Great video Thank you. you never know till you try.
Thanks Mark, Gary
That back plate was nicely made.
Thank you Robert, I appreciate that.
Well, that was good for a 3 Vyaw chuck.
I have a small gearhead chinese lathe with 160mm chuck and modded it.
I 1st clean the chuck well.
After looking at ways to make it more accurate, I put in various sizes round bars to determine how accurate is was through the range. I found it was more off around the mid range of clamping capability than at the smallest or largest size.
So I decided not to do anything to the jaws but rather dril three holes at a 1 degree angle inwards 6mm threaded with grub screws to rather dial in the chuck with these in line with each jaw, so 3 screws, now this is different than 4 jaw adjusting, but I managed it. To have stability I added a spring washer to each of the tree chuck tightning screws to the backplate, so it has some resistance at loosening it to dial in. I also scimmed 2mm off the centre disc on spindle backplate to allow for adjustment. One must remember to loosen the grub screws to allow movement as you want.
This works like a charm. Always remove and clean jaws 1st.
So normally I use 16mm round bar to dial it in for general use where the part is not turned around or rechucked. If I reverse the part and rechuck, I can dial it in(3x grub screws) to run true again.
So far I am very happy with this mod.
--Loosen 3 chuck holding screws, dial in by adjusting 3x grub screws, tighten chuck screws, recheck.
Not sure how other feel about such a mod....?
Nice, I just put a 8in on my Super 11, the 6in always seemed to limit me. Cheap and works great so far.
Great work. How is the cylindrical tap holder properly called?
Awesome work buddy, new sub here, looking forward to going back over some of your other videos
Best wishes and keep up the good work Ralfy
Ralfy, Thank you. I appreciate that. Gary
Exelente trabajo amigo yo lo hecho y también trabajo en un torno chino actualmente y son muy buenos es marca Bochi y hay torno polaco
Very nice Gary
Thank you sir.
Very good.
very nice... that chuck runs almost as good as my Buck Chuck at .0003 @ 2" diameter ish.. its adjustable to, but have never got it to run .0000 yet. but for anything I do... your chuck was probably made when China gave a poop on there quality not quantity .
Thanks Doug, Its not perfect but much better than I was expecting. I'm sure I can Tweak it in a little better but for what I do with it its close enough the way it is. Thanks for stopping by. Gary
I just bought an 8” Buck Adjust-Tru. Waiting for it to arrive. Was told the factory is jammed up.
on final you get the same one thousands runout you had on the chuck plate. so that chuck is actually pretty good
Turned out great! See what I did there 😁
I did see, :) And thank you. Your project is looking very good, all except that one small mishap :) Always nice to have you stop by. Be safe, Gary
Maybe the real question is how well it will age with use?
12" is a bit big on a 1440, but I run one occasionally when the need arises. 10" is a good fit. 8" is too small for me.
I would like to visit your shop
Tom sent me 👍
oxtool viewer here..
Nice boat. I hope you have a better Captain then the Evergreen. LOL.
Nice one Tom :)
yep another ox tool sent lol hello from North East England
:)
One thousandths from a 3 jaw is good enough..
When you say made in China you say how BAD is it? Never say good and China in the same sentence.
That’s just pure bs, from someone who apparently knows nothing about any of this. The Chinese make bad tools, good tools and excellent tools. That’s the same as manufacturers here, in Germany, Japan and other countries. Buy a cheap tool, and you usually, but not always, get a cheap tool. But I have some Chinese tools I bought about 40 years ago, and they are just fine. Some are equal to my Starrett and B&S variants. Maybe you should learn something before commenting. He has this chuck-you don’t, so apparently he knows what you don’t.
That particular brand is widely sold here (Thailand). They're superior than the cheapest of cheap chuck, In my experience.
I agree, thanks for stopping by. Gary
Do you know what the Brand Name is? I have two of them and they seem to be very good, but I haven't seen them sold anywhere online. Thanks
@@KW-ei3pi They're simply called "Universal" which makes searching almost impossible.
Very good
