Let's just recap here for a second; one self-taught man in a workshop using (quite) basic machines, makes a complex piece of tooling that requires multiple specialized processes and a very high level of accuracy.
Never mind the screw ups, the (insane, I would think) amount of time and, probably, money spent to achieve this - you are doing an incredible job and are an unbelievable inspiration to go out in the workshop and make something.
    Well done, sir, well done!

Now that he has done it once, if he can just manufacture these chucks in small batches, he would make a pretty penny. 6-jaw chucks are very expensive and highly desirable for manual and CNC machining.

Just the fact alone that you built the gear connection from your milling feed to the rotary table is worth an oscar in the machining category.

I work mostly on a Toss SN 50 lathe fitted with a 250 mm diameter 4 jaw self centering chuck which is far superior to a 3 jaw chuck for many reasons. But a six jaw chuck would be fantastic. @FnA Agreed. The only thing that caused my eye to twitch (at first) on that totally cool rig was the belt. I thought, well if that slips, the whole thing is shot. But then I considered all the gearing and figured the load on the belt was likely too low to make it slip. The scroll turned out spectacular indeed!!!

I remember when I used to think gears were challenging. In those days it was mostly lack of knowledge and partly the tooling or equipment. Soon as I made my first C brake suddenly thinks began to change, add a 4th axis, then a 5th axis to the mill, and boom, the world of tool making broadens, and does so efficiently.
I would encourage anyone who wants to machine to manually first. If you cant make due with manual how will you make quality with CNC? This guy knows what he is doing. His love is for making all things, not manufacturing. I’m familiar with this mindset.
When you’re building your shop this is what you do. Before anyone thinks to buy a CNC engineer all those tools you want to buy from scratch like this guys and only then are you worthy of being a machinist. If you can’t make a boring rod, or thread a trapezoidal lead screw, regrind a broken end mill, or make custom cutter’s for your lathe stick to manual you haven’t spent enough time earning your keep yet. Before you turn on that first CNC build it, don’t buy it. Earn your communities respect.
To all of you who know what I’m saying and appreciate this guys work because you’ve been there, hats off to you my friends l, you are also exceptional.
Most will never understand until they’ve made it.

I’m blown away. I watched your first few videos and you progressed so far in a short time. Anyone who watches a lot of RUclips machining videos knows of Tom Lipton, Robin Renzetti, and Stefan Gotteswinter (sp?), and in no particular order I’d rank them top 3 but after seeing this I’d throw you right up against them in a heartbeat! I haven’t seen anyone else make something like this on RUclips. The mag chuck in the 4 jaw on the lathe had my jaw on the ground. That’s a new one I’ve never seen (yes I know they make commercial round mag chucks for lathes but that’s not the point. Then the diamond nib to dress the id grinder. Not to mention the geartrain running off the power feed to cut the scroll. Whipping up the pinions (little bevel gears) checking your hand ground cutter on the shadowgraph/optical comparator. I’m prolly gonna rewatch it cause I think I’m forgetting a couple more impressive operation not seen on these parts very often. And you hardened the parts too.
Incredible, just incredible. My hats off to you young man!

0:00 -- I am sure he will make an independent 6-jaw to not have to cut the spiral groove.
(makes machine to cut spiral groove) -- No way!
(proceeds to chamfer the groove) -- Now you are showing off.
    ...
    Awesome work, as always!

The rotisserie set up for hardening is sheer genius !
I don’t even want to think about how many hours of work went into this and all along still being able to concentrate on getting it all on video is mind blowing!
    Thanks for the video !

Great work man! Respect for building something like this. A lot of challenges in the proces. Keep up the good work. Btw, a 7 Jaw chuck would have been very unique too... ;-)

I've always wanted to see how a lathe chuck was made. Of all the years I've been watching RUclips, I've only seen a few. They were mostly half hearted and failed efforts made out of poorly cast aluminum, peened or screwed layers of metal plates, and toy 3D plastic prints. The closest I've seen to a properly made one was a miniature CNCed brass 3-jaw chuck. I just chucked making a lathe chuck (No pun intended) to being too complex for even a expert machinist to make. If it was possible, lathe chucks wouldn't cost as much as they do.
Well, here I am with my jaw dropped after watching not a face plate, collet, 3-jaw, or even a 4-jaw, but an actual size, meticulously machined and hardened 6-jaw chuck! This young man didn't win the 2021 competition because there's no competition! He has upped the machining game on RUclips to a whole new level! RUclips machinists, including Gotteswinter, please take note!

You are definitely a genius! Your mind works better than 99% of the minds in the world! That's just a fact.
I admire you! You use your mind to the max and then push it some more.
Thank you for sharing these amazing feats of engineering and machining!
If I were a wealthy man I'd find a way to set you up in a modern machine shop where you could employ your countrymen and make a future for many people.
Thank you so much for sharing the work that you do! :)

Cà Lem, as usual you never cease to amaze me with your skills and understanding of the processes needed to manufacture machine tools and components. You make it all seem so simple (to watch, let alone do) but you manage it will what appears to be an almost effortless manner. Simply amazing to see you work your way through every step with the skills of a master craftsman. Bravo Sir, Bravo and thank you so very much for taking us all along on your journey. Stay Safe Sir, and Thank You again.
