Coming from a mixed background with non-orthodox Ashkenazi Jewish relatives on one side of the family, Roseanne touches on so many of the subtleties that I felt growing up decades ago which have become obvious to many others in recent times. There's so much going on with these topics but I personally related to how wildly the environment changed with Jewish families over the last century, and I speak with some degree of experience as I had a mixed Jewish/Christian heritage and regularly got to see both worlds growing up while visiting either side of the family. All families are weird and dysfunctional, but attending big events with extended Jewish family was always such an eccentric affair back in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. It wasn't that the family was bad or mean or causing problems because everything was tightly knit and supportive, but even as a kid I could sense a lot of them related to the world differently than most people do. And I don't just say that "because antisemitism" but because even as a little kid, it always felt like a charade and now as an adult, it becomes easier to explain why it was. There was a sense of perquisite exceptionalism that always seemed implied but never explained, with very little humility about life, as though nobody had ever eaten humble pie in their lives, and didn't have any plans to ever do so. Many of the Gen X and Millennial children born in the wake of the Boomers were spoiled for choice, and the Jewish zeitgeist was basically forged out of post-WW2 trauma which became a kind of crutch to fall back on whenever touchy subjects arose about how the Jewish community has, in reality, managed to thrive despite all the obstacles, setbacks, antisemitism, etc. that we're all conditioned with over and over again. Many members of the family were affluent but not exceptionally so, and while affluence often results in successive generations being spoiled, it seemed strange how so many people were upper middle class despite the fact that there were also frequent reminders about how they were also oppressed. It felt like being in a dysfunctional relationship with someone who has bipolar disorder where everything in their life is fine but they also find ways to point out how things actually aren't fine. Even as a five year old, I could sense how strange that was, especially when I had childhood friends from other backgrounds whose families could barely afford to feed and clothe them. My Christian relatives on the other side of the family were by no means perfect either, but there was at least a sense of humility and gratitude with them that didn't seem to exist with my Jewish relatives. The rest of my non-Jewish family always seemed generally content with what they had, even if it wasn't very much, and they often had a lot more wisdom about the world even though they didn't have the same resources and opportunities growing up. I could probably count on one hand the older Jewish relatives (from the Silent Generation who actually experienced what happened in Europe during the early and mid 20th century) who were actually solid people with great perspective and humility. But they are long gone, replaced by a group of people who share very few of their values beyond a shared heritage, and who couldn't be more different in their political alignments and social causes. Rosie explains a lot of this so frighteningly well it sends shivers down my spine, because I've experienced it myself and chose to detach myself from it.
