- Paul Stamets sits amongst a fruiting of the iconic Amanita muscaria and discusses the thermal dynamics of mycelium and fruiting mushrooms. Is the mycelium an exothermic reaction whilst the mushrooms are endothermic? Could fruiting mushrooms help cause localized cooling? Please weigh in with your thoughts !
predator, nice touch...
It made me smile
It freaked me out im watching this at 3:24am and I didnt know if it was really the tablet or something else........... ahahahaha
wierdly enough, yesterday I was cleaning my computer and realized the CPU heatsink looks a lot like mushroom gills, It occured to me if the gills could have any cooling effect because of their shape but I dismissed the thought because It doesnt have similar material properties as a metal heatsinks, but the overall coincidence with this recent video is amazing!
That is a great observation! Though, do not be so quick to dismiss it as dissimilar material. Mushroom spores have super high electron density - comparable to metal. I think your idea of the gills is worthy of investigation. I wonder if someone has already discovered such a detail as the electron density of the gills.
ha they really do great observation man.
Well, the gills on mushrooms create more surface area the same way heatsinks do. However instead of radiating heat into the surrounding air, like your computers heat sink, maybe they diffuse heat into a liquid like we do with sweat. Mushrooms need a lot of humidity in most cases and made up of a lot of water and when this water evaporates it takes energy with it, even without temperature change changing states requires energy that has to come from somewhere, the same is true in reverse ice actually warms up slightly when it freeze initally relative to the liquid water around it. This process then makes the mushrooms slightly cooler than the surrounding environment. That's just my hypothesis
Yea that's pretty smart. Also they're located under the cap. So they get no sunlight and actually capture wind. Pretty genius
lol that pred noise at the end xD classic.
It freaked me out
I regularly marvel at the cool temps of shrooms/fungi compared to air temp. I guess my thoughts are more on a spiritual(?) level? I always imagine that the fruit is drawing the cool temps from the depths of the earth (or other substrate) because it is so connected & somehow maintaining that temp above the ground/substrate. It's like the fungi is proving just how wonderful it truly is :)
thank you paul. I love to listen, and read your enthusiasm.
Apparently one person doesn't like to learn new things, oh well their loss. Paul you have inspired me to dig more into the fascinating world of fungi, thank you.
Fascinating! thank you for sharing!
I noticed a mindset of perfect sterility when growing mushrooms like oyster and other grain spawned fungus. I experimented with non sterility and found many species don’t need the sterility if the variety is a type easily identified, oyster or silllies or anything that can grow on paper doesn’t need but a steam or a quick boil if the food source isn’t more than the fungus can eat before competing fungus take over. I understand for lab purposes yeah but I know what I’m looking at and for stuff like oyster I just boil some paper with a lil old coffee grinds gypsum and straw throw a handful in a jar then cover with Tyvek. Steam for a few minutes and literally just throw a whole live oyster mushroom in there after rinsing with distilled water. If I want to get fancy I dip in peroxide. Then I just feed at rate that the mushroom can keep up with…. Lid half open in the bucket….. fruit it with light…. Never did the whole bag thing and syringe nonsense or even used grain spawn ever even for sillies I literally just fold some tissue in some boiled paper and just keep feeding at a rate the fungus can control. That’s all that’s happening in nature, it is able to beat out competition is all. We just like to see a Petri dish fill with fuzz and it has it’s reasons but to simply have a mushroom fry 😂 you don’t….😅.
Super cool, good thinkin Paul
do you think the lower temperature of the mushrooms have to do with moisture on the surfaces?
hahaha the added predator sounds at the end! what a legend
the predator sound at the end is hilariously.
Surprisingly similar to mammals keeping the seed eternal to the main body.
That's cool that predators are also interested in mushrooms. Maybe our races can work together in peace on this project.
Seriously though...I love your videos, always fascinating. I also find it *crazy* that I just watched predator last night for the first time in about 10 years. The sound effect had me cracking up...well played.
Is this filmed on one of those new caterpillar phones?
Fascinating!
Very Interesting!, The video image threw me off for a sec 👌
Would love to go on a trip with Paul
That was awesome 👍😁😊
Awesome food for thought
That's pretty cool
Much love from Fungi and I
The mushrooms may be cold but Paul Stamets is ON FIRE!! :)
Muhomorka ❤
My dad owned the church of which the ambrosia society operated out of now despite all the controversy blah blah blah blah blah that might’ve come from that they did make a damn good amanita wine. I do know the recipe like the back of my hand because I helped Donald Teeter refined and discover a lot of how to make the wine correctly from the ancient literature that he read. Now, one thing I will say casually off to the side my dad, ate massive amounts of portabello mushrooms, and I’m talking like a half a pound a day of dried. He died from bladder cancer. Donald died from a heart attack because he refused to eat anything but beef…. Food for thought….
Haha what a sense of humor dude 😝
The water vaporising from the mushrooms cools them down .
simply above ground and small so cooler than earth. To be expected by any object.
hey Paul, I have seen a lot of these Amanita muscaria popping up all around me this year. Watching some of your videos you look really familiar. Did you happen to swing by my place a few years ago, I was putting a roof on my bus? I think you (if it was you) said you were camping at Penrose?
Random facts: mushrooms are are about 2.5 °C colder than the surrounding via evaporative cooling or evapotranspiration. As there are lot of fungi growing on the Earth (~2% Earth biomass) it's estimated that they make the mean surface temperature of the Earth about 0.04 to 0.1 °C cooler (Cordero et al 2020 'Fungi are colder than their surroundings')
Paul has anyone done any research on why soldier ants will come up to defend a fruiting body when the colony is using it for eggs? i was out picking amanita and found a colony of ants using them as stores for babies almost like brooding chambers (all not noticed before picking the mushroom and disecting it) but as i tapped it to disperse the spores soldier ants came up out of tunnels next to the amanitas. I was curious if theres some kind of give and take there.
it could indeed also be a collector, could it denote a flow? i am also thinking of galaxies here, with the suns providing energy for the black hole in the center
is it related to water content? water conducts heat better than dry leaves or dry bark
Ви легенда!!!
Some kind of thermoelectric effect ? (i heard about mushrooms was the bridge between mineral world and vegetal and the shape they have is a reflection of electromagnetic field/etheric)
Always great! Watch out for that Predator! Peace
Love u man. We're studying Muscimol in a GABA / nootropic group. S'going well.
HAHA I'm in that group you're referring to I believe, on FB
Yea
would this apply to sclerotia or truffles as well?
This is expected from anything that is more moist than the leaves etc. on the ground.
Не понял, что вы говорите! Но очень интересно....
Well the gills are heat exchangers, aren't they? Great area of investigation though. Gee...
my guess would be they evaporate water to cool
Thats normal, its in the ground, the watwr flows from the cold ground to the top. Sucks uo the heat and goes down again.
I guess in mushroom it flows quicker than in plants
mushrooms are wet, evaporation would make them cooler than surroundings
Wouldn't the soil contain similar amounts of water?
Everythings wet and damp. Its a forest.
Very few people find trails in their studies that have any depth as does this guy.
Every vid so far he has wondered something new about mushrooms and then done a test.
Which makes him interesting compared to somebody who knows a lot that they studied about but that's where they end, at the last page in a book.
Hi Paul please help me identify a white polypore with brown underside found on an unknown tree stump in sparce woods of pine, beech maybe oak (it was night time) All I collect is polypores to make tea and tinctures with as I have R.A. but this one has stumped me. I live in south west France Europe. By the way it is not a birch polypore but very identical charareristics of a red belted polypore. I can send you photos. I have already asked via mushroom identification fcbk pages with no luck. Many thanks.
bianka booth , post me a picture i can probably id it for you. Im well versed in over 500 polypores
oyster mushrooms feel like cold flesh.wierd how they grow in the cold.
hey
"Want some candy?"
Predator, alien, angel, transdimensional being, mushroom? The predator only hurts the ones with weapons. I'd just lay down my guns if I was going in the jungle. My luck, I'd forget about some little back up pistol and predator would see it
