  • www.ted.com Usman Riaz is a 21-year-old whiz at the percussive guitar, a style he learned to play by watching his heroes on RUclips. The TED Fellow plays onstage at TEDGlobal 2012 -- followed by a jawdropping solo from the master of percussive guitar, Preston Reed. And watch these two guitarists take on a very spur-of-the-moment improv.

    Imagining Usman at a party, he sees some guy playing smoke on the water, kindly goes up to him after the guy is finished with the 5th repeat of the riff and about to lay down the guitar. He politely asks him if he could play too, the guy looks at him funny with a little predjustice, then Usman starts playing and not only the guy but the whole room goes quiet.

    This was a very beautiful musical experience. Music has so many faces and expressions and I love when someone is pushing these borders in a harmonious way. It was very beautiful how Reed in a humble way Gave the young Riaz an opportunity in the last impro to shine taking for himself mostly the rhythm part. This is the brotherhood of really gifted musicians.

    • @n3yy299
      @n3yy299 10 лет назад

      naa , I dont think so, not one bit . Go back and take a serious listen to more of Michael Hedges. These guys played really well "Technically" but when you don't emotionally move the listener then you're just noodling. Michael Hedges was in his own league both technically and in ability to convey emotion with very graceful or violent changes in either or both dynamics and tempo ...and his independence of parts was on the level of someone like John Williams. And that's all before he starts singing ...Michael Hedges is un-matched to this day. With that said, I did like Usman played

    • @davidsimonis748
      @davidsimonis748 10 лет назад

      If you re-read my comment you'll notice that I said that these two take Hedges' "technique" to another level.
      At least we can agree that Michael Hedges was a wonderful guitar player, performer and artist. I had the privilege of seeing him play live in Seattle 20 years ago, and that show has yet to be surpassed. Cheers

    • @n3yy299
      @n3yy299 10 лет назад

      yeah i hear ya man, these guys played well, not on Hedges level technically, nor do they move you emotionally like everything i've every seen/heard by Hedges...at least not as i hear it...Now someone like John Williams or Pierre Bensusan will move you. If you long for that part of Michael Hedges check out Pierre Bensusan .

    Two secrets brothers:
    1. Alternate Tuning
    2. Low action
    Optional: No nails. If you're a fingerstylist, you may want to completely chop off your nails.

      @DanielBinkowski123 9 лет назад +8

      +Napoleon4778 Not sure if it's preference, but as far as i know right hand nails are pretty important for fingerstyle guitar. This is not fingerstyle btw

    • @Napoleon4778
      @Napoleon4778 9 лет назад +7

      Daniel Binkowski That's why I said in case you are a fingerstylist who has long nails, you might want to cut them to do this percussive guitar thing.

    • @DanielBinkowski123
      @DanielBinkowski123 8 лет назад +5

      In my opinion fingerstyle is plucking your strings with your fingers like tommy emmanuel does. He is tapping most of the time and doing percussive stuff which i would not consider to be fingerstyle. Also no need to insult me

    And Kaki King, of course, was hugely influenced by Preston Reed, who developed the style in the 1980s. She met him at a music camp and took his style and developed it in her own direction. Many of these fantastic musicians started with Preston Reed, including Andy McKee, Jon Gomm, Kaki King and young Usman Riaz.

    That must have been a lot of pressure to play something off the cuff, but they managed it well.
    I can only assume he told the kid in his ear that he would keep the beat and let him play. But then in the middle of the song he said "I'm a peacock... you gotta let me fly!!!" And banged out those quick riffs.
    Then in true professional style, he let the kid finish it out with his riff.
    Very well done!!👍🏻🤘🏼

    What I find really cool is that to me, Mr Reed clearly let the spot on Usman Riaz. If it could be kind of pretentious to says that he's rewarding the young generation, Mr Reed give some space to this talented young man ! Impressive are they !

    The late, great Michael Hedges pioneered and mastered the percussive guitar style around age 17, and I've yet to see anyone come close to his skill. I saw him play live 3 times, and he blew my mind all 3 times. But these guys are pretty damn good too. That guy credited Preston for inventing that style 20 years ago. Yeah, he wishes. I was disappointed that Preston didn't correct him and give credit where credit is due. Hedges could have played both of their parts simultaneously when he was alive.

    • @Laura-lv1ke
      @Laura-lv1ke 9 лет назад +2

      tomaf Music isnt about competition. theyre not saying theyre better than hedges, theyre just doing something they love and have passion for. and just because theyre not as good as him doesnt take away from their quite clearly incredible talent

    • @nividicus
      @nividicus 9 лет назад

      tomaf Get off this hedges guy's d man. seriously. he probably isnt half as good as you believe you remember, and he probably wasnt even the original innovator who made the style so shove off you bellend

    • @tomaf
      @tomaf 9 лет назад +2

      +nividicus Oh, he's even better than I remember! check out
      his vids on youtube. And yes, talk to anyone who knows anything about guitar
      history and they will tell you that Michael hedges not only pioneered it, but
      is unsurpassed in skill. And watch more than 1 vid, because his skill is not as
      clear in all of them, but most of them his mastery is apparent. As I remember,
      he wrote the amazingly complex "Aerial Boundaries" at age 18, and
      that is mind boggling to me.

    • @tomaf
      @tomaf 9 лет назад +1

      +nividicus Oh, and one more thing, he used alternate tunings
      on most, if not all of his songs. That means for each song, each fret makes a
      completely different sound. Can you even imagine if you are playing a bunch of songs
      at a concert and each song has an alternate tuning, how amazing it must be to be
      able to keep all those combinations straight in his head put each finger in the
      right place to get the notes he wants?

    • @tomaf
      @tomaf 9 лет назад +1

      Laura Barrie
      By taking the credit for that style of music, the wanker is
      saying he's better than hedges. Worse, he's basically stealing from Hedges by not
      fessing up when she gave him credit for it.
