How to upgrade a vintage to modern drill driver

  • This is a vintage 12V cordless drill driver from Nation, Japan. I'm hard to find its spare part while It has problem with the power switch. The gearbox is still very good, and I want to use this drill with my existing battery (18V6Ah Dewalt). I decided to upgrade it from 12V to 18V by changing the motor, power switch and mount new battery adapter. As the result, It works very well and so powerful. You can see all the process in this video.
I hope you find this video useful and enjoy it!

This drill seems to a generic version of the Panasonic 9 volt from the early 90's or late 80's. I bought it at Lowes. Panasonic made good (expensive)tools. They have become hard to find because they are not in home centers and seem to only sell them at specialty stores.
The problem I have had with mine wast the speed switch on top. lost the little spring and a part of the switch broke in pieces. Panasonic has always been piss poor on parts for these drills and I refuse to get rid of it to spite Panasonic!

One thing i would change is that instead of 3D printing that part/spacer, i would cut some copper line spacers and use those. That would give the motor a little bit more space to breathe. With a couple of washers on the plastic side, it would work perfectly ok. Also, no issues with strength, i used to do this all the time when i spaced much stronger electric motors for saws to keep the motor well out of the enclosure.

  • @mrawthecat

A bit concerned about the 3D printed part for the motor. Won't the excess heat melt it eventually?
