This is very helpful. Maybe you can tell me what is going on inside my four speed 833. I did rebuild it so it has been apart. Not my first time doing it.
During my initial test using the shifter I can't get into reverse. The shifter does move the arm when I push the shifter arm over and try to shift. The lever swings but hits solid like it won't slide into the reverse gear you pointed out on the outside of second gear. Like the reverse gear on the outside of second gear won't slide/rotate over. It hits right away after 10 degrees or so and won't budge in.
You think the second gear is still in synchro and didn't move back into place when I shifted into third and fourth? Any suggestions?
Maybe the detent ball fell out and the second gear won't slide back when I shift into third or fourth? Thank you. It was helpful looking into the trans without taking the side cover off....

Awesome vid…so my A 833 is often crunchy when i downshift into second at medium speeds. It isnt crunchy however at low speeds and only when downshifting to second….Any theories?

Our would not downshift into second until about 15mph without grinding also. Has to be the 1/2 synchro assembly worn…

      Hey Roy! 😃
That’s exactly what my ‘65 Dart is doing…
      Time to rebuild mine.
      Thanks for the video!
      It’s a great reminder,
Dad showed me once when I was in high school in the early 90’s.

Hello... I have a 72 Challenger 340 4 speed. Does not want me to downshift from 4th to 3rd unless going in my mind too slow. If i don't slow down considerably it will grind. replaced clutch thinking that was problem. Unfortunately it was not.. thoughts? Upshifting fine.

      Sounds like synchros…

You can "get away" without tearing into it for a while ,by rev matching as that usually helps with tired synchros.
You don't have to go full double clutch and rev match like an old non synchro box but matching revs can help on the downshifts.
Been doing it for a while in an oldie I don't wanna open up just yet.

Question so is 4th supposed to be locked ? Or is it supposed to move freely kinda confused on that because mine moves freely when put into 4th

If you mean, locked from input shaft to output shaft, yes, if it moves freely, something is not right

Does that imply for Muncie 4 speeds as well?

That's easy, they make a grinding noise. Can't find them, grind them.
